Attaching Whatman Filters to Needle?

Long time lurker here, I had a specific question I couldnt find with the search function.

I’ve come across an ugl semi-finished test e oil in a 100 ml bottle, it’s apparently pre-filtered but I’d prefer to personally know its good before transferring to sealed sterile vials.

My understanding of the filters is the female side has a luer lock that screws onto a syringe and the male end is a luer slip. What would I need for the male end to attach the needle?

Any advice before I order anything would be appreciated a lot, thanks!

You shouldn’t need anything special. From memory luer lok just has a screw thread that is more secure.I don’t think the it works like a nut and bolt where both pieces are threaded, only one side is threaded.
Whatever system you use simultaneously press on and turn until its seated well, and you shouldn’t have a problem.

Just slip the needle on. It won’t come off. There is little to no pressure on the needle but lots on the filter/syringe connection. Hence the luer lock

Thanks for the response that makes a lot of sense

Although as stated there isn’t much pressure on the way out of the filter I have had the needle slip off the filter. Just make sure to really press it on and I like to try a slightly twist it, somehow that seems to help it hold. Finally I actually hold the filter in my hand and use my pincher fingers (index and thumb) to hold the base of the needle securely on the filter. Of course when I was using syringe filters (not dissimilar to the whatman inline) I had to keep refilling the syringe that fed the filter. I tried using a large volume veterinarian syringe thinking the large plunger would help put more force on the oil moving through but in actuality the small 3 cc syringes work best. You can barely move anything through with the larger syringes.

Make sure you got the right filters. Not all are appropriate for filtering oil. And the particular source you’re using claims that the semifinished oil is safe to use, but I would absolutely not trust that claim. Make sure you have sterile vials to fill as you filter the oil.

I’d be re-heating that prior to filtering it. Also, use a vent pin when transferring to your vials.
