Actually, I think you can get to know some one even BETTER on this medium than a face-to-face. People tend to be freer with their thoughts and feelings on an anonymous medium, they will open up more because there isn’t the direct embarassment of the eyes staring at them. Also, there isn’t the physical intimidation or body language getting in the way. Shallow? Maybe. Useful? Definitely.
Sorry, I did not realize that your post had a question in it that needed my answering. First off, my “home away from home” is the training/nutrition board. I visit the off-topic board once in a while, but I find the conversation on the T/N board a lot more satisfying. Sure the relationships are superficial in a lot of areas, but they can become pretty deep when it comes to the iron game. That is all I’m trying to say.
I don’t see anything wrong with trying to get to know someone on a forum. It does replace face to face meetings, but it is better than no meetings at all. I think that we would all rather meet at a pub and shoot the shit but it is not possible, but by getting to know one another on the forum it may one day lead to a face to face meeting, who knows where you are going to end up living or traveling to, for work or play. This forum has its problems but it is still a great place to exchange ideas. You may disagree with a poster and label them as arrogant or a stupid newbie, but thats what a forum is all about, different viewpoints and ideas being exchanged, good or bad.
Agreed, but I still don’t put my full weight in a posting, since I don’t believe it totally reflects how a person is in real life. I have gotten good advice from several, even though I had to work to get to it from a posting that could have been done better. (that’s o.k. too) In my view, presentation is important too.
Something interesting has happened (and probably has for a while on this site).Maybe I should have trusted the posters on this site, and not even worried about all this…
It seems as though many of the regular posters see right through this “self-rightousness”. A few of these posters have shown their “true colors” over the past few weeks, over and over again, simply with the tone of their post. However, REGULAR posters have always seemed to put them in their place.
This is a GREAT Forum!
