Armstrong - NYC Marathon

Lance Armstrong just finished in 2:59.30 in NY. Pretty cool stuff. Also, first time in quite awhile Kenyans failed to take 1st place in the men’s and women’s divisions. A Brazilian won the men’s title (1st South American to ever win the NYC Marathon) and a runner from Latvia took the women’s title. Just a little f.y.i.

My brother has run Houston and I believe Boston in under 3 hours. Kind of cool my brother is faster than Armstrong.

Being faster than Armstrong is pretty good, I’ll give ya that…but your brother is over an hour faster than P-Diddy! oh yea, and Oprah

Three hours sucks huge nuts. Normally I wouldn’t dog a guy but he was talking 2:20 and has since been a colossal joke in the running community so that’s what he gets. I can’t believe he got Hicham El Guerrouj to pace him

3 hours isn’t blazing, true, but I heard him say he was aiming for sub-3hr, which he did, albeit by 30 seconds. He also had distance legend Alberto Salazar help pace him as well, with H.E.G. running the final 6 miles with him. They all run for Nike so I saw it as a marketing ploy and nothing more.

Exactly. Armstrong is an amazingly talented athlete. He ran this time with very minimal training and without even completing a longrun over 16 miles. With his ability, he could no doubt improve on that finishing time dramatically if he trained seriously for an extended period of time. Grete Waitx-9 time marathon winner and one-time women’s world record holder also paced him at one point. She did it because of his character and because he is an inspiration. When she got breast cancer, he sent her a personal note telling her that she was a fighter and could beat it just like he had.

That’s cool he finished the marathon in under 3 hours, but it seemed all the media focus was on him. They talked about him all day long, but didn’t even mention the runners who actually WON the race. To the media, it seems like Lance won the race. I don’t think it was fair for the other runners. They deserve their respect.

yes, a lot of the “real” runners are annoyed with the whole Lance thing. 3:00 certainly doesn’t suck, but that’s all relative. I’d say it’s approximately equivalent to a 300lb. bench press. Good for the average person but unremarkable for a dedicated athlete

I hope no one mentions Oprha Winfrey again. When I see her I want to puke. Granted reading her name only makes me mildly sick.

nobody is saying armstrong won the race and besides and how much media coverage does a marathon get anyway ? it’s not like they’re missing out on something they would’ve had.

I stroke it to Oprah.

I Tivo Oprah.

(Not really but it sounded funny)

LOL, you guys are killing me.

Everyone talking smack about 3 hrs is an absolute joke. How many of you clowns have run 26.2 miles? I ran the marathon yesterday and not one single runner was upset about the Lance coverage. I have friends who ran sub 2:40. My time was 4:49. Don’t talk shit you don’t know anything about.

A sub three hour marathon is a remarkable accomplishment. For Lance Armstong, maybe not, but for the majority of long distance runners it’s a goal most will never achieve. I’ve met countless people over the years who have complete marathons but never anyone who has finished in under 3 hrs. It’s much more difficult than you think.

I always thought Lance was a douche after he divorced the woman who stuck with him through so much shit for so long to be with that skag he’s with now.

Dude, you critisize Oprah again and i’ll kick your ass!

Shes the woman of my dreams!

I mean it!

Didn’t he dump Crow because she has breast cancer?

Good point! I bet he ran so slow because he took “performance inhibitors” They better test him…

Well, I’ve run a half-marathon. And ran track and cross-country in college. At a pretty high level. 3 hours is not a stellar time. What IS true is that there’s no reason why Lance should be held to a higher standard. He is not trained as a competitive distance runner and did not hold himself out to be. I don’t know where people got that idea. Nothing I’ve read or seen on the subject suggests that he did.
