Eric, I actually started my MSc in biomechanics only to find out that it wasn’t my passion. You want to really piss someone off? Tell your advisor half way through your thesis that you want to jump ship and become an exercise physiologist. lol. However, I am MUCH happier doing what I’m doing now which will make it possible for me to complete a PhD.
It appears that your lab has a lot of funding. Is this common in the States?
No; UConn is atypical in that regard for three reasons:
Dr. Volek is outstanding at writing grants
Dr. Kraemer’s reputation
The state government has given the largest public university grant in US history to UConn TWICE since 1999. Suffice it to say that the campus is/has been completely redone. Some of the dough went to research as well.
For years I’ve been looking on ESPN to see if they’ll carry the NCAA feed. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t, and if they do it’s usually just the men and just the Final Four. But it’s all totally random, sandwiched in between, say, a rerun of a 1999 rugby game and cricket (zzzzz).
A couple years ago at Final Four time, UConn was playing and it was daytime here. So I put on my UConn sweatshirt, went to the campus, and sat in front of my computer hidding “reload” every 15 seconds to watch the streaming audio/video. Pathetic! I think everyone in the hallway was wondering why I was starting at my computer and yelling.
