Im almost 18, and right now trying to drop the bf% for 2 months before bulking again for college Fball. I have a job, but still, shelling out $40 a month for Surge and 40 for Grow! is a little pricy for me. Are these absolutely necessary to reach my goals?
If not, what are some good food sources i can eat to reach the place I want to be at? Ive started the cleanest diet ive ever had, consisting of lots of chicken, lean beef, tuna, whole wheat pasta, brown rice and salad. What other types of food are good, especially breakfast type?
No, supplements are not necessary. They are called “supplements” for a reason. The only supplements I would use in your situation if you can afford them are Grow and Surge but even they aren’t necessary. Do a search for the “foods that make you look good naked” article and that article pretty much says it all. You names most of them already.
For breakfast a dozen egg whites and a bowl of old fashioned oatmeal is a great way to start your day.
Most people overlook the economic value of Low Carb Grow!. 1 tub of Grow! costs $23 and it has 16 (2Scoop servings). 2 scoops = 40grams of high quality protein at only $1.44 per serving! A dozen eggs cost about that much, same for a can of tuna. And probably more expensive is chicken and lean steak so you really can’t go wrong with using Grow! Plus it’s a lot less of a hassle than cooking especially if your in a rush.
Fats: extra virgin olive oil, all natural peanut butter, nuts. I’m leaving off fish oil caps and flaxseed oil since you are on a budget, but if you can get some that would be great. Most of the stuff I listed you can freeload off of mom :o)
Carbs: old fashioned oatmeal (very cheap and a GREAT carb source!), fruits, veggies, long grain brown rice, sweet potatoes, yams…
Great post, but I would like to add that a can of tunafish is not $1.44. I pay $0.50-$0.60 a can, and you can find an even better price when they’re on sale. (Try SamsClub or PriceClub, check out the Wednesday and Sunday newspaper coupons)
For some people that $1 doesn’t make a difference, but for a fellow 19 year old college student trying to do the same thing it makes all the difference.
Another thing you might want to look into is actually 100% whey protein. Let’s say you buy 5 lbs of whey protein for $25. It comes with a little under 100 servings. That’s a little under $0.25 a meal although you don’t get as much protein.

Hope that helped.[/quote]
Grow! is a better MRP, but hey, you do what ya gotta. Whey is a great protein source too, and its way better than nothing.
DeVito did a good job in his explanation. I think it’s a misconception that many people have about bodybuilding that they have to have supplements to grow. Your first priority is to get your nutrition and training in line. All the supplements in the world will do you no good if your eating poorly and not training properly.
supplements can be more efficient time wise and nutritionaly wise, so you pay a price for that. it all depends on your needs and what you are capable of. laters pk
