This ain’t necessarily advice. Just a war story.
When I simplified my squat and DL workouts that’s when they first went over 500 and over 600 respectively.
Before that I did all the assistance work I could handle because everyone did assistance work.
Then I found an article on (doesn’t really matter workout method) which utilized a 5 week cycle.
I started doing nothing for squats except for a bunch of squats, no more than 3 per set, once a week. I concentrated on explosiveness and form. Squat workout took about 15 minutes total on Monday.
Friday similarly for the deadlift. A shit ton of explosive, “perfect” form deadlifts for about 15 minutes.
My theory, if you train with “perfect form”, that is choose a form which isn’t stupid and stick with it, the weight you lift will be limited by your weak points. The weak points will have to get stronger if you stick to a form.
I’m new(ish) to this gym, and I compete at this meet and this guy, local gym deadlift hero in my weight class is there. He’s got him a posse and all that. Well, I kill him in the deadlift, by maybe 50 pounds or something.
One of his posse comes up to me after the meet and says “You should do leg presses to help your pull from the floor, (guy you just crushed) does leg presses to help his pull from the floor.” I answered “I do deadlifts to help my pull from the floor.”
Just a story.
