Anyone Juice?

Vita-Mix. You will never go back

yeah, I’m really considering a Vita-Mix, thanks guys.

someone I know says his $40 blender does the job and a vita-mix is a waste and those that have it are just “fan boys”… he’s usually a smart guy and on point, but several people have said their vita-mix is the best appliance they have

I just watched “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead.” It’s a documentary that starts out with this one guy who juiced for 60 days – nothing else – and lost 100-something pounds. Then it tells the story of all the other people he inspired to do it. The rate of weight loss is astounding. It’s on Netflix, I recommend it.

What I just can’t fathom is operating on such trace amounts of protein and fat… wtf?

Buy a nice blender (like a bar grade blender). Get some frozen or fresh berries of your choice. Throw in a banana, an apple, berries, some vanilla yogurt, scoop of protein if you like, some nuts if you like, a huge handful of spinach, some cauliflower, and water. blend for ~10secs max w/ a good blender → scarf down. You can get 3-4 servings of fruit and 1-3 servings of veggies this way depending on how much of each you put in. You of course can do different veggies besides spinach and cauliflower. I find the spinach tastes good, and the cauliflower is bland enough that the berries mask the flavor. If it’s not sweet enough for you to handle, put in some no-sugar added strong juice flavor that you like. There’s tons of different combos. That used to be my old standby though and man… it was awesomely healthy. I tend to eat more veggies now than blend/juice so I generally only put in spinach as the veggie these days (eliminates chopping time of other veggies). You’re right though - juicing/blending in general is an awesome way to sneak in veggies.

And drinking an entire smoothie of veggies. I’ve seen the show, it was interesting. I have no idea how that guy was able to convince obese people to drink juiced veggies. I don’t think many of them even knew how to spell brocoli lol.

it’s actually a good documentary, not too preachy on the idea. Rather motivating too, as far as juicing.

that said check out www.hungryforchange.tv it’s a great new docu and free for the next week online.

while a few of the people in it are hardcore vegans, they seem to have a nice mix of people and even Dr. Mercola, and the film doesn’t push veganism. Touches on a few different areas of health, overall pretty good.

it actually got my wife interested in juicing (for skin health) and it was “her idea” to get a juicer/vita-mix

I tried one of the rotating/spinning juicers, ended up buying an Omega masticating one. I’m happy with it, owned it for several years now and it’s still running like a champ.

The downside of the masticating juicer is that it cant really juice things that are super soft without much pulp. Certain things like soft fruit will just sort of turn into a slurry and then you have to put things in that are more pulpy to right that problem (like celery).

Generally speaking, try to go for crisp fruit rather than very ripe fruit and you won’t have too many problems.

Of course then there are certain fruit that have most of their nutrients in the skin anyhow, like blueberries that are probably best eaten anyhow which I’m fairly certain you already know…

Careful with your roots, I got served some burdock root, I think it was burdock, damn tasted like a vegetable loogie/ oyster. Taste was like cucumber but texture, turned the whole juice into a big snotty, slick and sticky substance.

I bought the juicer brand that was in that documentary after I watched it. Juiced maybe less than a dozen times and now it’s just been sitting there collecting dust. There’s too much prep, clean-up…the amount of groceries you have to buy in return for so little juice, it doesn’t seem worth it. I’m going to give blending a shot and see how it goes.

Blendtec anyone?

$100 cheaper, larger carafe with a bigger blade.

He could have just done the V-Diet for all that

Another vote (not that this is a poll) for the vitamix. Definetly worth the money over my old oster blender. Spinach or Kale or both, carrots, red cabbage, frozen fruit, ginger, water and scoop of whey BOOM! love it.

Can’t even compare a $40 blender to a vitamix or blendtec… Both take seconds to clean and u get all the fiber the juicer leaves out - although I also have a juicer for now n then…

My dinner: tsp peanut butter cup of oats scoop of whey, strawberries and honey… Mixed to perfection in the blendtec… My blender would have never achieved the smooth texture. Green smoothies, although not as yummy re also easy to make.

Go w Costco , lifetime warranty on any blender…

yeah blendtec from costco is $450 with shipping and 2 carafes

Don’t you lose the fiber when you juice?

For the last few months, I’ve been shoving a buttload of spinach, chard, kale, broc, cauliflower, and celery in my blender, filling it halfway up with water, squirt a bit of that mio drink flavoring stuff in and drinking that.

Doesn’t taste too bad and is a quick, easy, painless way to get a whole lot of healthy foods in ya.

Also, I literally just rinse the blender out when I’m done and let it air dry.

blendtec blendtec blendtec blendtec

I have one of of those Ninja blenders, its turns anything into puree in about 30 seconds. Yesterday I blended a whole bunch of spinach, 3 whole carrots, one cored apple, 2 handfulls of grapes, and squezzed a lemon in it. It actually taste fantastic. kind of like a apple sauce constancy. If you want it shake like you can add a cup of sugar free juice. all the fiber and vitamins/minerals you could want.

This is exactly what my wife was doing for about a year (minus the flavoring stuff) but she just bought the Omega Masticating juicer mentioned above. I suspect throwing everything into a blender is the healthiest.

Cleanup is a pain in the butt; a brush and elbow grease are needed.
The juice tastes really really good so it’s worth it if you have time.
My favorite recipes are:

Carrots and Ginger with a bit of apple to add sweetness (or just buy sweet carrots)
Carrots and Parsley
Carrots and beets
Parsley, kale, and some other green (this one tastes pretty gross because of the kale)

But… I would have to say overall the most amazing is grapefruit by itself. It tastes really bitter but something about it… when it coats the tongue and the mouth it really gives me a feeling that my body is getting what it needs (not something I can really describe, and not something I get from any other food).

Also, don’t try juicing things like berries, it just turns out to be a complete waste of food.

Dr. Mercola is a quack, who cares if he is there.

I used to think the same way. He’s not though. Over the years, the more info that comes out, it often seems the more right he is. There’s still some stuff that is “out there”, but I bet give it a few more years and you’d be surprised.
