Anyone Here in the Army or Navy?

In the Navy, “rate” is your rank. CPO(Chief Petty Officer) is an E-7 for example. “Rating” is what you do, like Machinist’s Mate or others. Just clearing that up for anyone who didn’t know. And nate you can look into VBSS if you do get to OCS and get all swotivated, or if you’re enlisting it is an option too, if you wanna do some “cool shit with guns” in the Navy and not try to go to BUD/S or EOD training.

I had to look up both swotivated and VBSS. You can do that in addition to whatever your rating is? And arent the MP hated by everyone else?

I can’t speak for much, being but a lowly USMC Poolee at the moment, but I can say that all of the recruiters I’ve met have been really decent human beings. They hate their jobs, but they work the shit out of them and they really help the people who want to be Marines. So far, I can’t say I’ve felt deceived or lied to at any point, and no one has tried to sweeten or sugarcoat anything. Then again, the Corps doesn’t offer anything but the chance to be a Marine. I imagine people enlisting in the other branches might feel cheated at some point, but the Marine Corps doesn’t offer you anything to cheat you out of. That’s why I love it.

lol That just means they’re doing their job!

Our recruiting office has a framed copy of that one. It always makes me smile.

VBSS I am almost positive you can just volunteer for depending on the size of your ship. Any Sailors here correct me if I’m wrong.

Update:

Got back from MEPS some time ago. Scored a 96 on ASVAB- so decently pleased with that, but was PDQ’d b/c I need a waiver for past alcohol charges. Working on getting a waiver.

1 recruiter says past charges will deny me some jobs, another says it should not have any effect. I have about 1-2 weeks before that gets taken care of and I go back to MEPS- no idea what I want to do still! Most guys there were taking IT jobs. Must be all that is left and I dont think any one of the them scored over an 85 or so.

I went in the Navy for four years and I can say It really depends on your job how it goes for you. The guys on the flight decks for example I think have the roughest job on a carrier. From my experience the best people go to carriers. By best I mean the grades you get in A school.

If you don’t have a school or job lined up you will go to the fleet as a Bo’sun which I don’t recall exactly what they do…the basic real ship stuff like handling ropes etc…and alot of painting. Any hew I went to basic in Feb. to San Diego, after that was Lowery AFB for I.S. A school, then down to Key West Fl. Air base for additional training (sweet so far right) .

I finally ended up in Jacksonville Fl at the USS Forrestal CV-59 (Air craft carrier). The ship went between the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and Jacksonville and had a new deck put on during that time. We went out for sea trials and stopped at Nassau Bahamas and a short time afterwards headed our to the Mediterranian Sea. This was a six month deployment which wasnt to bad. We stopped in England, Palermo, Genoa, Palma de Majorca, CannesFrance and we got to see Paris and Capris, an island off Sicily.

So as you see you can get good duty or shit duty. And try to choose a job which is in demand, you will get promoted quicker…and study for the ASVAB.
If you score high you can pick whatever rating you want. Good luck…some jobs are only on Carriers.

Im joining the Marines in a few months, and finishing out my senior year. Cant wait!

That sounds very cool! Totally did not study for the ASVAB, and I think that prevented me from acing it, but in the end, not sure that matters.

I have filtered my main areas of interest to the following communities: intel, aviation, Sub, and surface combat/ops. Also interested in spec ops, but my vision was 20/200 correctable to 20/20, so I dont qualify for some stuff I guess. I think right now there arent too many jobs available, so if/when I get the waiver taken care of, I will have to look at my available options.

Anyone have any thoughts on this waiver? I have no idea if my recruiter truly believes I will get it or if he is just pulling my chain a bit…

Well I’m not sure on your exact situation but some jobs require a background investigation because you will be handling classified information (yes Top Secret is not just in the movies). I was in Intel. With that you have good opportunities to work in government or security.

The shore duty as an IS is awesome. If you don’t mind getting up in front of people, giving presentations, math, dealing with officers, or having a fighter pilot ask you to plan his mission, then this job might be for you.
