Anybody a Day Sleeper

Does anybody here keep highly unusual waking/sleeping hours? If so, have you found that to be beneficial to your overall health? (The effects on employment, academic, and social lives are pretty obvious, so I’m not interested in discussing those.)

I normally keep regular hours, and while I can get to sleep fairly quickly at night, and slumber undisturbe, I nontheless always wake up groggy. During the winter, my job forced me to wake at about 5 a.m. I adjusted to this by hitting the sack at about 8 p.m. I got used to this rapidly, and would wake up with a feeling of something approaching freshness. However, I have found that this schedule is hard to implement in the late sunset summer. Additionally, the most satisfying sleep sessions I can remember have occurred at odd times. So, I’m thinking of becoming a day sleeper. Thoughts, please, especially from nocturnal types.

I sometimes have the weirdest sleep schedules. I do NOT consider it to be beneficial to my overall help. However, my sleeping hours beyond being strange, are also severely lacking during the school year, as we frequently spend all nighters attempting to complete problem sets. As a result I did sleep often during the day, however this usually caused strange sensations that are difficult to describe.

if i have a lot of time off, i find myself up until 4 am and waking at 1pm

my body clock seems weird

you guys are going to think i’m wierd. i get to sleep around 5-6am, i wake up at about 2-3… I make it too all my classes and everything but other than that i find i work much more efficiently at night, no one’s awake, everything is quiet, and i have no distractions, i end up learning the most and getting the most done after midnight…

What about any physiological/psychological improvements?

I ususally stay up late and wake up late. My weirdest sleep cycle happened recently, in fact, last night: I went to sleep at 2AM, trying to get up earliar than my usual 2-3PM… for some reason, it backfired, and I woke up at 7PM! It sucks, I dont know why I can’t get on a somewhat “normal” sleeping cycle.

I’m another late sleeper. I usually go to bed between 3 and 5 am and wake up around 1pm. I think it’s fine as long as you get enough sleep.

10-4 good buddy

i think my body would perform perfectly in a world with 30 hour days … i like to be up for about 20 hours and then sleep for 10.

if only someone would accelerate the slowing of the earth’s rotation … or increase the deceleration … (this is one of those air conditioner things … to make it colder, do you turn down the a/c, or do you crank it up?) … anyway, if we slow the rate by 25%, we could get rid of all mondays and about 1/3 of wednesday’s too … something about wednesday, and i can’t place it, sucks

I work at a bar 3-4 nights a week so I CAN’T fall asleep till around 4-5am. I sleep till 1 or 2pm if I can and I’m good. If I have an AM class I try to take a nap around 2pm-6pm then hit the gym and I feel great. Personally, I kind of like the 5-6 hour night time sleep and a 4 hour nap in the afternoon. I don’t know how healthy it is but I feel good.

I also think I work/write/think better at night.

I work as a sleep technician. Go to sleep at 8am and wake at about 4pm. I highly recommen staying on a regular sleep cycle. Basically your constantly going against nature when you sleep during the day. It can cause you to retain and gain more fat. It definetly messes up your hormonal balance, as well as puts more stress on the heart. Day sleeping/third shift work is one of the worse things you can do for your body. On my days off, I make sure to use timed sleep deprivation to force myself back onto a day schedule. Getting a few days of ‘normal’ sleep has really improved my health.

As far as feeling more refreshed when you wake. It could be when in the sleep cycle your waking. Viewing sleep in 90 minute chunks can help. You go into REM every 90 minutes. So getting 7 1/2 hours of sleep will usually help you to wake up more refreshed than the whole 8 hours. Depending on how long it normally takes you to fall asleep. Remember, the 90 minute trick can help when you going to be sleep deprived. Taking 1 1/2 to 3 hour naps may help you to feel more refreshed. That has been my experience anyway.

Also, using melatonin when drastically switching sleep patterns can help. Daily usage is not recommended since it’s effectiveness is short lived.

Hope this helps a little!

Thanks everyone for your responses.

i don’t know how its effected me, right now i’m cutting but my strength is going way up oddly… but i doubt this has got to do with sleep
