I second the Nikon Bushmaster. I just bought one for my Savage 111 lefthanded bolt with the BDC (Bullet Drop Compensator) reticle and the scope has accurate holdover positions for out to 400 yards I believe with .308 and out to 600 yards with winmags and the like.
Stupid thing was that I had to bring it in from the USA because the new person (see: woman) in charge of Nikon Canada doesn’t believe in hunting and doesn’t allow scopes to be sold here. Thats good for business. Asshat.
That is crazy. Nikon is a great company that really helped out my dad and his business back in the day.

I say go with an Armalite-15 clone for cheap…Versatile platform, tons of aftermarket stuff to trick it out in the future, ammo is reasonable $$, accurate, fun, cool, great for target work and one of the last great all-American designs from a genius so you get patriot points too/Besides, (on a depressing note), they are still legal in your state last I looked, unlike others, where the media smear campaign suceeded in having them banned just because they looked “intimidating”…
Bump this! I’ve always wanted one but the nazi’s in my state outlawed them.
The Ruger mini 14 is a great rifle. Rounds are affordable and very accurate.
However, I’ll never forgive Ruger for selling us out to Clinton to make a profit on so-called “hi-cap” mags (which we know are in fact “normal-cap” mags)…A rifle based on the M-1/M-14 platform could not fail to be cool though…

You gotta be kidding.
I do agree somewhat with the Ruger sentiments and if that’s true about Nikon, I’ll buy a scope by them. It’s hard to pry me away from Leupold, but you show me something good enough, I’d think about it.
Trying to get my license through now.
As another Aussie wrote, getting a gun license in Aus is a VERY VERY lengthy process.
My investigations so far have led me to lean towards a Savage .223 12VLPS with a Leupold VX3 6-18x40 or a Nikon 6-18x40.
This would be my first gun (for 20 years) and I’ll probably get a Henry .22 lever as well just for giggles.
The Savage/scope combination will probably set me back $2,500 or thereabouts.
You guys in the US seem to ba able to get this stuff a hell of a lot cheaper than us poor Aussie’s.
