So I have been in college for almost two months now. The past few weeks I have been experiencing nausea in the morning and lack of appetite. This has led me to lose 13 pounds so far. I just got cleared to start a linear progression after a few surgeries, so obviously this weight loss is not welcome. My question is do any of you have any methods of dealing with anxiety that actually work?
Some more info if you care to read further. I’m not a nervous wreck or anything. I have dealt with a college work load at community college for the past few years, and I also am quite social. I have a bunch of friends here and I’m having some good success with the ladies. I choose not to drink and party, mostly because of this stomach situation and I don’t need to exacerbate it. Most of my stress seems to come from balancing school and social stuff, as well as work on the weekends. Also my roommate is a nightmare so theres that. If any of you have any more questions feel free, i just wanted to give you some back story.
Yeah I need to get the room situation figured out. Its hard cause I am living in the nicest dorm on campus in a suite, so we have our own bathroom and fridge and what not. I’m afraid that if I get switched I’ll end up in a really shitty dorm, and there are some impressively shitty ones.
However, my roommate has night terrors and sleep walks. He has dragged my dresser across the room (big ass dresser), and the final straw was I woke up the other night with him standing above me yelling and about to grab me while I was sleeping. I was laying on my back and before I even woke up I had a fist ready and was about to knock him out. So thats def a large part of it.
@1man island. Can you point me in the direction of some good ways to learn meditation. I have tried before but I literally can’t get my mind to slow down long enough. I appreciate the advice.

mate you’ll enjoy living in a shitty dorm with people you can relax around way more than in a nice dorm where every night is a potential raping.
there’s been a couple threads on here about meditation. Heck, there was even an article years ago. I’m not good at it, myself… I’ve only gotten “in the zone” a couple times, but it takes practice, like anything. My prob now is when I get near it, I get excited and my conciousness starts taking over.
Jon kabat zinn seems like a good place to start. I liked to be walked through it a bit.
Rhodiola, seriously, my father was straight up addicted to clonazepam and ativan for work related anxiety. I get training induced anxiety from hitting the weights to hard and stress, sometimes just shy of a panic attack.
Rhodiola completely resolved my issue and has helped to transition my father off his meds.
It makes me completely calm and resolves anxiety in 20 minutes. I have no desire to punch out my coworkers anymore and while everyone else runs around in a panic about the latest crisis, I calmly resolve it.
I’ve not used used t-nations brand, and some cheap local brands don’t work very well.

Interesting. I’ve been using valerian and it seems to be working a bit but its effects are subtle.

No shit you feel like crap. Err…get the hell out of this situation IMMEDIATELY.
Even if you get in a grotty dorm once your grades are up and you’re getting some tang your concerns will fade away.
Ideally get the accomodation managers to get him to move. Even if its a natural condition his behaviour is not acceptable.
Aside from the advice already given pick up the book “At last a life”, by Paul David. I had very severe anxiety for over 6 or so odd years was on high dose meds for it as well. The tools and attitude I learned from the book cured my anxiety for good, I also got off all those meds at that time which was another bitch from chemical dependent anxiety, withdrawals, etc. Anyways it really cuts at the root of how to just drop it and it can save you a lot of time, trouble, and potentially money spent on drugs to control it. IMO drugs don’t do shit for anxiety anyways.

Valerian’s a sedative, I’ve tried it as a sleep aid, recommend amounts didn’t work and too much left me really groggy like benadryl.
I ordered 50g of the rhodiola once to try it, and it worked so well ive been ordering by the pound for my dad, girlfriend and myself. I take 1 gram twice a day.
I’ve just noticed today after replying earlier that my new stuff from a local store is salidrosides, not rosavins. This doesnt work at all for the three of us. It’s supposed to be more active than rosavins, but we don’t like it. The pure bulk stuff is very rich dark brown like clay, and the store stuff is almost beige.
All the cool kids live in the shitty dorms. No AC? Let’s all go around half naked (girls too) and leave our doors open for anyone to pop in and say hi. If you’re in a “suite” dorm (crappy word, no dorm is a “suite”) and your roommate is random, well think about the kind of kids whose parents would INSIST on putting them in the “high quality” dorms. (Daniel is allergic to mold, dirt, air, eggs, peanut butter, and make sure you respect his 9pm bedtime, national merit scholars don’t grow on trees you know!)
Just has to be warm in the winter. Everything else is completely worth it to hang with regular people 24/7. You can literally make it a Friday night activity just to go around a shitty dorm and meet new people.
PS sharing a toilet with one person is the same as sharing a toilet seat with everyone else anyways because of how many bare buttcheeks he has indirectly touched anyways through his lifetime use of public toilet stalls. Think about it.

It sounds to me as though your problem is not so much clinical anxiety but rather difficulty coping with your workload and the stress accompanying it. Forget the bullshit about “time management” and so on. The problem is not “managing” your workload but rather “getting it done.” The answer is simple > go to all your tutorials and lectures and keep ahead of your studies; start working on your assignments as soon as they are available; in short, keep ahead of the ball so you’ve got time up your sleeve and don’t get stressed worrying about getting things done on time. Or if your problem really is actual clinical anxiety try Xanax but don’t get addicted and don’t drive when you’re on them.
