Don’t give yourself too much credit man. You just ain’t that important.

I seriously agree with this, because I’m probably–make that most likely–make any significant dent in the workings of this world before I pass away.

if one is seeking help from an external source (i.e a sel-help book) then therefore they are not utilizing self-help.

Ah, that was just a humorous jab.

I’m certain that any of us are capable of having a great impact on the people closest to us.

I may not have any great effect on the whole world, just the important parts.

I don’t like bullshit self help people. Joel olsteen, or w/e the spelling is, is interesting to listen to but as a christian I feel like he is off and in reality is he is. You can’t believe things into happening, God has to want it to as well.

God’s will, yeah i’ll have to agree with that. At the same time, God wants you to pray for exactly what you want.

the way you talk just sounds like over-compensation, thats all
Overcompensation for what? How is my talk a form of compensation? How would I compensate myself or someone else by criticizing the rubbish in self help books?

I don’t understand you.
if you were a confident and happy person you wouldn’t feel the need to post some of the things you post.

i’m sure you’re a great guy to workout with etc. i just dont like the majority of your posts.

And yeah, everyone’s gonna hate me because I make everyone aware of just how fucking ordinary %99.9… percent of this world is - including people on this board who boast and brag and dream as if they were next Bill Gates, Peter North, William Shockley, Bo Jackson, or Catherine the Great.
It’s not hate. It’s just that some of us understand that in the real world, you don’t have to be a Bill Gates to not be ordinary. Your name doesn’t have to be in the newspaper to make a difference. Yes, you can serve coffee for a living and still fucking matter in the world.

Some of us, AREN’T content to sit on our ass and watch teh world pass us by. Some of us DO make a difference in the lives of others, every god damn day. I’m not rich, I’m not famous, but if you you think I don’t matter to quite a few people, you are nuts.

I think the “hate” you are talking about is the fact some people perceive these posts as coming off as the “every man’s champion.” And trying to coddle people into enjoying mediocrity.

Now dude don’t get all defensive, because I’m just speaking here, and not judging or attacking. But I will tell you this: I thank whatever is holy I don’t see the world like:
because I make everyone aware of just how fucking ordinary %99.9… percent of this world is
.

And there are quite a few people on this planet that are also happy I don’t see it that way either.

If someone else is content being ordinary, insignificant and generally a waste of natural resources, fine. But I have never, nor will I ever stop trying to be better tomorrow than I was yesterday, nor will I stop trying to help people around me achieve their dreams. I don’t need my name in the newspaper, I don’t need a book written about me, and I don’t need a million dollars to be someone. But it will be a cold day in hell before I stop trying and resign myself to a life of blah…

That “ordinary” waitress may be a single mom, working two jobs trying to scrape enough money together to feed her kids and give them the education she never had, so that they might actually grow up to make a difference in the lives of others. Well, that isn’t ordinary to me.

But, maybe I’m the one with the twisted up perspective.

Didn’t read the previous posts but this is my take:

Most people who read self help material are self-defeating and do not really practise or internalize what they read. Basically the user is normally the problem, not so much the self help material.
