Anti-Depressants and Lifting

I may get on anti-depressants soon. Any side effects for lifting? I hear they reduce libido some, is that a function of decreased testosterone (:() or an independent effect?

I don’t think it’s so much decreased libido as anorgasmia. For guys who don’t usually last very long, this can be a good thing. For a 17-year-old kid at an engineering school, it’s not so good. It wears off after a while anyway. It’s the same with most of the side effects (nausea, lethargy, etc).

My main concern is actually the increased predisposition to fat gain and retention. I’m hoping that with some hard work I can shatter the 10% body fat barrier this time around.

I’ve been on a few different anti-depressants, and the major problems I’ve had are increased appetite, sexual issues, and teeth clenching due to nervous system overstimulation.

The fix for all of these was to experiment with different drugs until I found the combination that had the lowest side effects while still being effective. Welbutrin and Lexapro are both very low on side effects for me.

Oh, and if you get erectile dysfunction, tell you doc to give you viagra/cialis/levitra, and it will clear right up.

whatever the psych doctor prescribes in a couple weeks. I’ll post an update. My guess is it’ll be either the standard Prozac or possibly Welbutrin.

I’m 20 so I don’t think that’ll be an issue

It predisposes you to fat gain? How/why is that? And which ones?

Uh, hate to break it to you, but age has nothing to do with it. I started on Lexapro when I was 26 and I got ED within the week. It was controllable with Viagra, tho.

I posted on a thread about Anti-Depresants affecting muscle gain/ fat-gain and explained why this can happen. This might help you out some:

Any of the antidepressants that increase serotonin will tend to lower libido by decreasing dopamine function. That includes all SSRI’s(Prozac, Lexapro, Paxil, Celexa, etc…), and the majority of TCA’s. Effexor and Cymbalta also have this effect, although they tend to work on norepinephrine as well.

Your best bets are Wellbutrin and Trazodone. They are known to increase libido due to their dopaminergic effects. Wellbutrin has a better track record overall than Trazodone, but they are both great drugs.

Men in general do poorly with SSRI’s as opposed to women. Unfortunately most doctors will prescribe an SSRI or Effexor/Cymbalta first.

I have tried many anti depressents and Effexor works best for me. My libido is the same as it was before, and im still as fat as I ever was, :stuck_out_tongue:

Mind you i am on a low dose, not sure what a moderate or high dose would do to me. I only take 75 mg and I am about 200 pounds.
