“Sgt Colwell said the “brave” behaviour of the passengers and driver probably prevented anyone else from being hurt.”
Sgt. Colwell should be shot point blank in the face for saying that shit.
I can’t believe no one does anything in these kinds of situations…

Same here, even though their illegal on campus. It’s saved my ass once before and Ill be damned if I don’t carry it with me everywhere I go.

This isn’t directed at you, but to everyone who talks tough “WTF I’d have done something etc etc” no you wouldn’t, you would be in shock and not know how to react. In the case of the Canadian bus beheading 3 people did actually try something, they had a hammer, a bat and a crowbar or something but when you have some psycho running at you with a rambo knife you freak out, and if you’re unarmed you would be even less likely to do something such as in this VA case.

WHAT THE HOLY FUCKING HELL!!! That was the most disturbing thing I think I’ve ever read. I was sitting there wondering what I would do? I’d like to think I’d have done something but some crazy bastard swinging a Rambo style hunting knife, I just don’t know if I could have done anything either, unless I was carrying, which I doubt the gray hound company would let that fly. Another thing, how’d dude get a giant knife on the bus?
I don’t know the security measures for boarding a Greyhound bus in the states but here in Canada (last time I took the Greyhound) they don’t check what you are carrying on board. Whether it be in a bag or on person.

What is it with Asians and VA Tech? I’m serious. Is there something we don’t know? The previous killings were perpetrated by an Asian man, and this most recent incident was an Asian man.
I was wondering the same thing.
I can understand people freezing up, but come on.
I have less and less faith in humanity every day.
A psychological experiment was conducted, I believe, I’ve only heard from my psych professor, where they tested if the amount of people present when a situation happens affects whether anyone will do anything.
One example of the experiment is they have two people in room, one of them is planted to pretend they have a heart attack/stroke etc. When there’s only two of them, the other person always went to go get help.
They did the same thing, but with a larger group of people. Where everyone but one person is planted. Again, one of the plants pretends to be dying, the person who is part of the experiment will more often than not, do nothing at all.
Again, this is my third person account of this, I heard of from my psych professor who probably read it from somewhere else, so I don’t have the exact specifics down pact, but this was basically how they did it i believe.
People are more likely to rationalize that someone else can help out when there are people around, it can be somebody else’s problem.
I’ve heard that too, I think the study was conducted shortly after some murder (can’t remember where) where a woman was stabbed to death in broad daylight in the middle of the street with hundreds of people watching. Everyone basically thought someone else would step in.
I wonder if knowing about the phenomenon would elicit a different response in that kind of situation.

This is exactly why we need more knife control laws in the U.S. We can start by closing the knife show loophole and go from there.
Also I think it’s simply crazy that virtually anyone can walk into a grocery store or sporting goods shop and buy a knife right off the shelf. There ought to at least be a waiting period, aka cooling off period, on the books.
And really sharp knives should just out and out be banned completely. If this man had went after this woman with a dull knife she might’ve lived. Only government approved certified butcher shops should be permitted to have really sharp knives and their knife inventory should be carefully monitored by the BATFK (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Knives).
Clearly there needs to be some sort of bat and knife control. Perhaps a waiting period as well. And a background check. As it stands right now, any lunatic can walk into a sporting good store or supermarket and come out an armed lunatic.
We need to outlaw brains because they are the most dangerous weapon…I guess the government probably engineered reality TV to take away our free thought so maybe they don’t need to outlaw it.
I do agree that you should be able to carry on campus. FFS people that get the license to carry are the only ones the law stops.

I would think so. I know alot of people have never been in those kinds of situations and when fucked up shit goes down, it’s like they don’t know how to react, so they freeze. It’s natural. Then after much after-the-fact pondering about how they “should” have reacted, they might attempt to be prepared for the next time something similar happens.
People react the way they are trained to. Or the way they train themselves to.
