Anna's Training Log Part 2 (Part 2)

This place is a goldmine

Found some interesting stuff?

Yep!

it’s pretty interesting how much chefs are supposed to just ā€œfigure outā€.

Apparently there’s not standards for culinary schools and chefs have to figure out how to manage a team, deal with suppliers etc. since from what I can tell, very few get training in that regard

Yeah, it’s all on-the job learning.

Well, it sounds like a great opportunity to write it yourself and just have him sign it.

I dunno how that stuff actually works, but if I was really important, thats what I’d do.

It’s definitely not how grad school admissions works and I don’t think I could write myself a good letter.

Yeah. That can be tough. The people that shouldn’t would love to, and the people that should don’t feel qualified.

It could be good practice though!

Still training.

it’s been a bit up and down. Last week was super good, this week has been ultra high gravity. Also get a really bad headache during good mornings. Surprisingly my lighter deadlifts today moved very well, just tired.

update on PI: I expressed my concerns and my concerns turn out to be unfounded. He really does care and has actually been doing a lot behind the scenes to set me up

Oh Anna, this is fantastic! I’m so glad.

Still training and had a really good squat session last week and a really really really good deadlift session the week prior.

Work has been pretty stressful. Code keeps breaking and databases are horrid to work with

@twojarslave @Brant_Drake

Friend challenged me to come up with a menu so I did one inspired by the favourite foods of Russian/soviet leaders with some historical context tied in

Czar Nicholas 2:
trio of amuse

  1. Fried Buckwheat and shiitake risotto cube (basically arancini’), use miso instead of salt
  2. Buckwheat tart filled with horseradish cheesecake mix and pickled beet jelly
  3. Shot glass of Beet kvass with sausage scented whipped cream

Lenin: Beer and Swiss cheese gougere

Stalin: arctic char marinaded in apple wine mustard wrapped in rolled bread and pan fried, serve with onion ash mixed with ground burnt sugar and apple gel

Khrushchev:
Smoky plum bbq sauce glazed pork tenderloin with sweet corn puree, millet cake pan fried in rendered bacon fat, pickled mushrooms and pea shoots

Brezhnev: lobster sausage turned into a corn dog with beet ketchup on the side

Gorbachev: white grape sorbet with white wine vinegar candy shards. Guests will be responsible for breaking a sheet of candy together to obtain shards

Yeltsin: vodka marshmallow and strawberry and gin pate de fruit

Putin: pistachio frangipane and strawberry jam tart topped with merengue, torched tableside

I’ve found it’s the people who use the databases that tend to complicate things moreso than the databases themselves. Speaking of history, having recently read Hitler’s National Socialism and Hitler’s Beneficiaries, I now have a better understanding of SAP database design than I did when I spent five years working on an implementation project in my late 20’s. You can almost substitute the SAPanese term of ā€œBest Practicesā€ for the Nazi term of ā€œGleichschaltungā€, which makes sense since it is German software originally designed less than three decades after WWII. In hindsight, the SAP implementation methodology is all about forced synchronization of the entire ā€œsocietyā€ of a business towards a unified purpose of selling widgets.

The food sounds really fantastic! If you’re looking to save some time and hassle, you could always just order Pizza Hut as your Gorbachev-themed dish.

Well….. the databases I’m using stopped allowing for bulk downloads and decreased the download limit significantly in 2021.

oh wow! I still haven’t gotten around to reading the book yet. I really need to read it

Haha!

I think you’ll enjoy Hitler’s Beneficiaries quite a bit when you have more time for optional reading. It brings a lot of subjects you’re interested in together, including economics. Hitler’s National Socialism wasn’t as enjoyable, being more of a slog through the ideology, but at least the author Zitelman lifts weights.

I actually just switched over to Russian history with The Gulag Archipelago. I read it a long time ago but didn’t retain much, so I picked up a copy of the abridged version.

@EmilyQ

I was reading the fatherhood thread and came across the discussion of messy homes

I don’t have an issue with procrastinating when it comes to school or research work. I’ve actually run into issues from getting started too quickly lol. However I really procrastinate housework (folding laundry, putting dishes back) or ā€œadminā€ tasks like filling out forms, making appointments etc.

is this normal?

Oh, of course! I blow stuff off all the time!. Our bathroom begs to be cleaned!

I specifically don’t like certain elements of the kitchen to be dirty. Fridge may need to be cleaned, stove may need some work, floor can be a little gritty, but the counters and sink should be rinsed or wiped after any meal prep, IMO.

oh definitely. Biohazards are no good. I’ve been experimenting with ageing and fermentation so my kitchen area has been smelling a lot like a hospital lately

I was more wondering about this type of trait in general. My accounting friend teases me about it sometimes. Stuff like

ā€œyour life would be much easier if you kept up with your files the way you kept up with your problemsetsā€

I think we prioritize what we care about. We have limited resources. Although personally I try to stay on top of things because I don’t like the feeling of things falling too far apart.

Still training. Last two weeks have been okay training wise, last week was pretty crap but managed to hit a grindy but not terrible double at 295 for deadlift. Squats sucked somewhat. This week was fine. Nothing spectacular, nothing shitty.

My left side likes to be more externally rotated than my right. Coach said there might be an imbalance issue in some stabiliser muscles so he added single leg RDLs. Those are humbling. I could barely get 7reps with 30lb dbs without toppling over lol :joy:

Still training.

managed to hit 305 for a grindy double on deadlift last week, which was really cool. Unfortunately twisted a bit weird and tweaked my hip a bit so this past week was a deload.

There’s been a lot of food in the office from seminars and events so diet hasn’t been under control. I’ve been up a lb and it’s definitely not muscle. I’m going to try to get that under control.

For some reason, I just can’t resist eating when food I like is around, even when I’m not hungry. It’s super frustrating and I’m really scared of getting fat when I’m at a job where I HAVE to be in an office (I can work remotely if I want now)

otherwise work has been fine. Mostly just mindless tasks
