Friend finished TAing and well… the shite with my academic situation. Went out for all you can eat KBBQ, had at least 2k calories worth of steak and pork belly. whelp. Going to clock in at 3.4k calories LOL… so… fulll
That IS big news, @anna_5588! Sorry to hear the program isn’t a good fit, but it sounds like you’re landing on your feet, and I’m sure you’ll hit the ground running, too. As @SkyzykS said,
Squat: 1x1-205lbs, 1x6-175lbs, 3x6-165lbs (1 set beltless)
Good mornings: 3x8-115lbs, slight pause at bottom
Adductor machine: 3x15-55lbs, slow eccentric
Abductor machine: 1x8-140lbs, 2x10-135lbs
squats felt smooth and good- took things really slow to work on foot positioning, legs were pretty tired so good mornings hard
Some thoughts now that I’ve had time to process
The process of quitting (under some pressure) was very sudden and poorly communicated to me. All the signals I was getting from the faculty and my advisor was that I was doing okay. Not excelling, but okay. Until I met with my advisor last wednesday, no one gave me ANY signals that I should quit and most of the people I communicated with were talking about “next year”, including a prof I met with last Monday. Advisor said that there were discussion among faculty about me.
This feels like what happened with my kidney surgery, where the doctors only talked to my parents and I didn’t know how serious the situation was until my parents told me that getting rid of the right was a serious consideration.
Something feels very “off” about how fast things moved. Within 24 hours of the discussion on Wednesday, where advisor and I decided that I should quit, she managed to connect me with the professor I might RA . This prof is essentially going to create a position just for me if he likes me. I’m not convinced this was a spontaneous reach out the way advisor framed it as
I don’t blame anyone. My advisor is correct in her assessment. I need more time. I just wanted more communication and transparency.
It does sound dizzyingly abrupt. I’m sorry about that.
You’d be an employee? Not a student? If so, I think that’s exciting. You’re still very young and have been in school for your entire life, pretty much. It might be nice to have a different experience.
For the field I want to get into, all the successful prof and PhD students have corporate or entrepreneurial experience of some sort. It helps to understand the communities/groups you are trying to study. My focus is slightly different so corporate experience is less important, but I do need to learn code to get into the groups
I’m actually not sure. It wasn’t too much of an interview- it was more “what do you want from me”
The prof is very new to the school so he needs time to figure out how to set up a position for me if we go through with it. In the meantime, I’m going through a “trial period” where I learn code and give him daily reports. I still have a quarter where I’m currently at so there’s time.
He is very insistent that I don’t just learn stuff for the sake of doing an assignment, which is cool
@tlgains I am considering it if the RA position falls through. Corporate experience could help, but it makes getting back into academia harder since I need connections in academia for letters of recommendation
Week 8: Day 6
… to take advantage of extra calories (finished up a jar of jam
Squats: 1x1-205lbs, 1x6, 3x5-175lbs
Good morings: 1x12, 2x10-115lbs- focus on form
leg extension: 1x7-105lbs, 1x6-110lbs, 1x5-115lbs
abductor machine: 2x15-125lbs, 1x8-140lbs
squats felt good and smooth- really focused on getting foot placement right, rest was fine but harder than expected
