Anna's Training Log Part 2 (Part 2)

Because for my training experience and as a female, anything faster would mean I would put on primarily fat (which turned out to be the case)

I also couldn’t get myself to train as hard as I needed to to maximise muscle building.

This is most likely why I thought I missed this phase of your training.

Limiting fat gain is one of those things I mentioned when I said, to the outside observer, you’re not doing the things in the recovery phase that one tends to do when they need to recover.

I would say this would be a result of the above.

I am one of your biggest fans. I really want you to succeed.

But, @anna_5588, you will take a big, big step forward in life only when you realize learn this statement:

Week 13: Day 6

Went to the gym intending to just do upper body stuff, staff recognised me and told me that they are going to start some electrical work over the weekend so barbell area won’t be available… felt good so… change of plans

lunges: 3x16 total-95lbs
DB bench: 1x10-45lbs, 1x6,4-50lbs
leg extensions: 1x(1 rep w/10 sec eccentric+9 regular speed)-70lbs, 75lbs, 80lbs
Adductor machine: 1x15-45lbs, 2x15- 37.5lbs, 1x15- 30lbs, done as one big set
Conditioning: (10db snatch/side+10front rack db lunge+10 db clean/side)-25lb db+ 1min rest+ (10 alternating 1 arm swing+10 regular swings+10 goblet squats)-50lb kb+1min rest+(10kb halo+5 bottoms up kb press/side+10 curls)-20lb kb

  • this went well, the paused squat felt solid but still heavier than expected, lunges sucked really bad, very happy with DB bench

So…… I have decided to get a coach starting next week. It’s a 6 month package that includes nutrition and lifestyle stuff

The investment is quite big but my cohortmates spend much more than what I’ll be spending on coaching for things like clothing, shoes, eating out and travel so it’s not completely financially irresponsible

I think it’s a great idea, and you’re right, others spend also.

I will never apologize for my willingness to drop more than $2K on a treadmill on the very day mine becomes unusable. I don’t apologize for buying a Concept2 or expensive food. I don’t even care that others spend more in various ways!

Happily, I can afford to take good care of myself. So can you - enjoy!

Week 14: day 3

Btn press: 4x10-20kg
Front raises: 4x15-12.5lb dbs
Cable row: 5x6-85lbs
Curls: 2x5-20kg

  • was very stiff and sore for some reason so took things easy and felt better after, harder on core than expected, these upper body workouts are 100% NOT following on plan because I frankly don’t give two fucks about upper body progress

Update: school stuff

  • first week of classes went well. Classes are harder this quarter but they’re less time consuming because less reading. The professors are really cool though- two of them study social networks and have agreed to chat with me in the coming weeks about how to get started with research in that area. Really excited!
  • research is a clustefuck @Bagsy @SvenG project got rugpulled and all the work advisor and I did first quarter is now void. The new direction we want is definitely better, so I’m happy that we redirected, BUT, it’s proving to be infeasible given our available sample size and will definitely not be ready in time for me to write my summer paper. Advisor said not to worry so I’m trying not to freak out too much. I should have a backup project but my backup got cancelled earlier last quarter due to collaborating company having legal issues…… any of this familiar :stuck_out_tongue:
  • I feel kind of lost. I love my programme and its flexibility. The dark side is that the flexibility is perpetuating my lack of direction. I want to study network stuff but I don’t have the quantitative tools yet which is preventing me from getting a grasp of the current research. I also want to study incentives like my advisors, but “incentives”, like networks, is a topic and not a field. I technically don’t have to pick a job market until the end of the year, but that is not a lot of time. All I know is “not OB, not psych, not CB” aka what the rest of the students in my programme are doing……. Whelp

Yes, and pretty typical, I think, though perhaps it varies by field.

As I recall, I didn’t work on a publishable topic until close to my second year, and then only as a co-author to another grad student.

Either way, your advisor says not to worry, so… Don’t worry.

Aren’t you a first-year PhD student?

Behavioural science is one of those areas with a very low barrier to entry so we get started on projects with a prof or two in the department pretty much the day we decide on a programme if there aren’t projects being grandfathered in.

Week 14: Day 5

Deadlift: 3x5-255lbs
snatch grip DL: 3x4-175lbs, planned another set but pushed 4th finger on left hand too hard and it started to tighten up and swell slightly so quit
feet up bench: 3x10-85lbs
Leg extensions: 1x20-60lbs, 1x16-65lbs, 1x12-70lbs, 1x8-85lbs, 1x4-100lbs, 1min rests btw sets
Abductor machine: 4x10-105lbs, 1min rests

  • Deadlifts didn’t feel too hard but just weird- like my muscles were on strike even though nothing really felt fatigued. They just didn’t want to fire or something. Snatch grip DL was going great until my finger got pissed, rest of it was fine

This happens to me when I either have too little sleep or too little nutrition.

To add onto this, if I have even the smallest of injury, I cannot get my body to fire on a deadlift. The deadlift basically works the “everything”, and a single break in chain will cause the whole thing to fail.

You’re an overzealous first-year student. You’re not supposed to have a strong sense of direction at this point.

As you probably know, most research is not earth-shattering. PhD-holders are valued far more for their ability to endure tediousness and hardships. You have such a long time to figure out which more or less trivial problem will haunt you for years.

You’re right.

My (former) CC who’s a theorist described his work as cultivating a bonsai tree- beautiful and takes immense effort, but will only be admired by a few in the grand scheme of things

Week 14: Day 6

35min on eliptical
10min on bike
6x(20sec hard +10 sec rest) on rope pull machine

  • good cardio, tomorrow and sunday will be my last workouts before starting with the coach!

@TrainForPain you mentioned school induced nightmares in Dani’s log. Mine have returned… Last night, I was locked in a room “Saw” style and progressively larger spiders were released into the room for every extra minute it took to derive some statistics results. I could feel the spiders!!!

@EmilyQ I don’t want to derail the Bedroom thread so I’ll ask here. You mentioned that your oldest resented having to share a bathroom with his siblings. Did/does he display a strong need for having his own “safe space” or sense of ownership over his belongings? What made you not okay with his dislike of sharing a bathroom?
I find that I am this way and cannot stand sharing a room with anyone because I needed “my” space. I also imagine having to share a bathroom with siblings who might try to mess with him.
