I honestly had no idea you felt that way based on how you talked about it. This radically changes how I view a lot of your writings. You are saying you are having a positive existence as it relates to food: thats outstanding and honestly amazing.
It is unpleasant at times, like my interactions with my friend (that one)
It sucks that I felt shitty when I talked to him, but having someone who was willing to explain papers to me and help me with maths was worth it.
Worrying about calories/portions >> getting fat from lack of accountability
Because if I did eat as much as I wanted, even if healthy foods, I could easily put on an insane amount of weight since my appetite is far bigger than my metabolism
It meana much to hear that this is a joyful existence for you. I have seriously misunderstood
Week 4: Day 6 (mini extra lower body workout)
Lunges: 5x8/side-50kg
Deadbugs: 4x15/side
Leg extensions: 5x10-65lbs 60sec rests
KB RDLs: 4x8- 2 40lb kbs, 5050 tempo, super set w/20 alt bodyweight lunges
- felt good- got the work in and my legs are surprisingly smoked. Exam tonight, Hawaii tomorrow
So, have you met with the campus RD yet and if so, how is that going? It’s definitely not “normal” or healthy to be thinking about the caloric content of everything you eat all of the time. Be mindful, yes. Obsessive, no. It should not always be on the forefront of your mind and if it is, there are professionals out there to help you with that. There’s more to life than calories - enjoy your food, don’t let it control you.
yeah! she’s great.
She said that 1800-2000 was good, told me to eat more carbs and avoid high FODMAP veggies.
I took her advice and it actually worked out pretty well (although I’m very sad about not eating cauliflower)
She did say that she wasn’t qualified to deal with any psychology though.
Semester Wrap-up @SvenG @cyclonengineer (tagged bc academic stuff)
Warning: Long Post ahead
Okay, so… This was by far the “hardest” semester I’ve had. Hardest is in quotes because most of my econ maths friends have done much worse.
Classes:
-
Real analysis- Real analysis is one of those classes that a LOT of ppl are scared of. Now that I’m done, I am in theory mathematically competent enough to do the econ I want to. It was not nearly as bad as I expected bc 1) I studied my arse off during the summer in prep 2) my prof was ridiculously lenient. I definitely struggled towards the end, but it went very smooth. If grades weren’t so important, I would have liked to be in the other class, with a harder prof. They def learned more.
-
Social Network Analysis- I’ve always been interested in social networks. This class was actually a replacement for PhD micro since I was scared of failing due to lack of real analysis. This class turned out to be a LOT more work than micro would have been. For the first 9 weeks, we were reading 200 pages of very dense material every week. Readings tapered off in the later half, but that was replaced with a project. We read an entire 800 page textbook and over 50 papers. However, this class was WAYYYY more valuable than micro would have been. We ended up doing a really cool project on the post link network on stack exchange. A random professor also popped in and added his own insight. I’m def going to do more SNA in grad school
-
PhD Behavioural Econ - This is by far the most painful class I’ve ever taken. 3 hours wednesday afternoon AFTER real analysis… The professor teaching it is a VERY highly regarded behavioural economist and also one of my letter writers. He recommended that I take it, so yeah, I didn’t say no. I actually did very well in the class- full marks on the final project and highest score in the class on the exam. I also made friends with the grad students and def boosted my reputation with said professor
-
Creative Non-Fiction - This was a very fun class. Very chill and a good excuse to keep writing. I wrote my final piece on my experiences in the “dating market” and classmates and profs loved it.
Other
-
Applications- I REALLY dropped the ball on this one (who would’ve thought…) I’ve spent 3 years working very hard to put together a strong profile. I came in very strong- 5 profs who could write me strong letters, lots of research experience, getting started with SOPs early, clear research interests. WELL… I realised how much more maths I needed to do what I actually want (busEc, Applied econ) pretty late. I also bombed the GRE (not as big of a deal it turns out). On the application itself, I made several very embarrassing mistakes Ie.g. misspelling prof’s names and emails LOL). I learned that attention to detail is actually important. Looks like nitpicky advisor and my friend (that one) were right. Regardless, one of my advisors said that I impressed my academic hero enough to have an informal admit to my top choice programme. Praying that it works out.
-
Emerging markets - Last fall, I took Emerging markets. It changed my outlook on econ. The professor (my favourite) mentioned wanting to turn his notes into a textbook of sorts and I volunteered . I did it… Took 54 hours (the equivalent of a mini class). He was extremely pleased with me. I have no interest in macro, but the longest thing I’ve ever written is a macro text book. The irony
What’s next
-
Classes - I’m taking it easy next semester. underloaded classes. The focus will be on my thesis and doing well in Linear Algebra (yes, I did Real analysis before linear algebra). I’m also going to audit graph theory to continue with social network analysis

WAITING FOR GRAD SCHOOL STUFF… GAHHHHH
You’ve worked your tail off, @anna_5588, and it shows. Way to get it done!
So, have you thought about finding someone who is? It would go a long way in improving both your current and future quality of life. Trust me. I’m speaking from experience.
Okay so I’ve just been doing random hotel workouts, nothing to write about.
On a happy note, grades for the analysis exam came out today
I GOT A 95!!!
After I take linear algebra next semester, I am (in theory) mathematically competent enough to do the econ I want.

Yeah…… if this shite keeps happening, I think I might actually turn down offers from hbs and Wharton if I get them….
This is a bit unusual around here. It typically gets a little chilly by this time of year, but this is nuts.
Week 1: day 1
Good mornings: 1x20-95lbs, 2sec pause at bottom, 3 breaths on top, superset w/20 alternating 1arm kbs-45lb kb
Press: 3x12-55lbs, 90sec rest
Lunge: 1x30(total)-95lbs
Btn press: 1x12,2x11-20kg
Kbs: 6x10alternatkng 1 arm-45lb kb, EMOM
Conditioning: 4x(20sec kbs-25lb kb+20sec air squat + 20sec rest)
- this was quick but hard. The good mornings were not too hard on arse or hamstrings but it was very hard to keep the bar on my back, I did a lot of presses and rows in the hotel gym last week so my upper back and shoulders were pretty fried going in, still digging the 1 armed kbs- the extra 5lbd makes a huge difference.
Note: pullovers are a no go
Maybe radar chest pulls?
Definitely interested in seeing how this goes for you
I wouldn’t be able to superset bc the gym with cables is 10am from my house and that gym doesn’t have a barbell.
I was thinking I could do “hardstyle” kbs, but i can’t do 20 with the 45lb kb yet. I could maybe start w/10 and work up to 20
I don’t understand why thats a factor for radar chest pulls.
