Just walking to places, doing work on treadmill
Only 5-7k steps are actually purposeful activity
Because the intent is not exercise (going from what I understood).
If she’s going on a treadmill to walk on an incline with the purpose of more steps and does work to pass the time then it should be considered exercise.
But if she’s doing her work on the treadmill to increase productivity then it’s increased activity yes but not exercise. I would consider this as part of her daily life the same way I would if she was a tour guide getting steps in due to work
Same way I view going for a 30 minute walk at night to aid in digestion as non-exercise (due to the intent) despite it resulting in more steps but going for that same 30 minute walk with the purpose of getting steps in, as exercise.
semantics
It definitely isn’t. My legs get very uncomfortable when I’m still and my mind tends to wander
When I’m walking (at a slow speed, 2.6mph), I have a much easier time focusing on mundane tasks and reading. Less temptation to hop screens and check discord or whatnot
So you could cut the 5-7k which you add for exercise?
Not saying you should but I would.
Those 5-7k come from the two 30-40 min walks I take after lunch and dinner, still not exercise, but purposeful
What’s the other 20k / 2 hours for?
Seems like you walk enough that you would naturally be walking after a meal either way.
40min is walking to and from “work” (it’s a mile away from dorm)
I spend 90min-2hrs working on treadmill.
Sounds like you’re walking 3-4 hours each day.
I don’t know if this is too much.
I don’t know if this negatively affects your athletic endeavors but I suspect it does.
I’m guessing you could easily reduce the steps if you wanted to.
If you value the benefits over the potential drawbacks then keep on walking!
Just to point out (not saying it is the case) it is common for people to play mental gymnastics and try to justify steps as non exercise (“It’s not exercise I just walk 90 minutes to and from work despite a bus being able to take me to and from in 15minutes each way” is something I have heard)
I am inclined to agree with this opinion.
However I can say for a fact it does contribute to metabolic adaptation/ slowing down of metabolism if done without consuming sufficient calories. This may explain why weight is being gained on a deficit
So, I wrote a fairly long post in response yesterday and accidentally deleted it. That annoyed me and I decided to revisit this some later date. But now I see that Vision1 and Bronwen_Blunt said pretty much everything I wanted to say, so I’ll keep my reply short.
I don’t think it matters why she’s walking that much. The point is walking that much will negatively impact her stated goal of getting stronger and more muscular (I realized that this is a better phrase for Anna than ‘bigger’) unless she takes the appropriate steps to recover from it.
I’m guessing the disagreement we have is due to Anna not eating the calories to compensate?
( That’s what I got Bronwen_blunt)
Which if so then I agree. Do you think if she fueled herself enough ( which I think is the reason for her not getting stronger or more muscular) her walking would be an issue? I’m guessing that would be appropriate steps to recover from.
I think it’s my fault for not being clear in my posts, regardless of whether extra steps are exercise or not they are still activity which should be accounted for when calculating caloric expenditure
I think i’ve done this maths before in this log, but i think it might be relevant. My step tracker puts 30k steps at around 1200 kcal a day. For someone who gets uncomfortable eating over 2000 kcals a day, that’s a lot.
I feel it’s worthwhile to mention the classic “success leaves clues” here.
But, again, I always admire the tenacity on display.
I have been reducing steps slowly. I don’t want to do it all at once bc it’ll drastically reduce my energy expendicture
Deload: Day 3
5x(5 clean pulls+5 snatch grip deadlifts)-135lbs, superset w/ 16 lying leg raises
RDL: 5x6-135lbs, 3010 tempo
DB rows: 5x10/side-30lbs
I still think 15+miles a day is excessive walking and places undue stress on her body. This is because I broadly subscribe to the idea that our joints and muscles have a finite lifespan to them. That number may be unimaginably high, and the average people will never reach it, but it’s still there. That’s why I think high level athletes inevitably end up with some sort of overuse injuries and have cranky “something” as they get older.
I also think eating appropriately will help her recover from her excessive walking and help her in her goal of getting stronger and more muscular.
And, right, all movement is physical activity. That’s what NEAT is after all. They need to be accounted for the pursuit of your goals.
That would help but calorie expenditure is not linear and additional exercise cannot be offset by simply eating more.
Your body would adapt quickly I bet
To be fair, I don’t think Anna is walking 15+ miles a day. She’s 5 feet tall if I remember correctly. Probably 10-12 miles.
