That is an advantage. There are people that would rather fail alone than win as a team.
It’s the other edge of being a glory hound. On one side a glory hound can say “Yay! I won all by myself!”. On the other, when they fail, it is due to themselves alone.
I can’t really think of any single thing I’ve done as an adult that was a singular effort, entirely on my own.
Edit:
On the other hand, there is a hand full of people I can think of who absolutely nobody will work with or for, for any number of reasons. And I’m talking about making a living, turkey on the table. They’re on their own, and they pay for it.
I used to be one of those “lone wolf” types. It only took one diff eq lecture to change that (the first one).
I’m also incredibly lucky in that my school is VERY VERY encouraging of collaboration. In most of the classes, the profs explicitly told us to form homework groups if we wanted and would help students find one.
On a related note, I think a lot of ppl are afraid to ask (research supports this). In this regard, my lack of social awareness helps by removing some of those fears/reservations.
If I don’t understand something, I never hesitate to speak up. I always thought this was normal until I realized I was usually one of the only ppl who did it and my friend in my game theory class called me “brave”
My mindset has always been: i need to understand this material and the professor’s job is to teach it. I don’t care if others think I’m stupid, if I don’t get this clarified, it’s my grade that suffers.
Even offering and letting someone know you’re there can help, breaks the ice even if they don’t want or need anything.
I was over my buddies place rebuilding a thing this past week. There was a mason there too, repointing and capping his chimney. After the typical Hey how you doing stuff, I just tossed out “If you need anything while you’re up there, give me a holler.”.
And just like that we’re buds. Ended up fixing the bottom release on the tailgate of his truck and making a few bucks while making the other ones I was already there for.
Tier1 Bench: 1x3-30,40,50; 1x2,2x1-60; 1x4,1x3-55
Tier 2 and 3: giant sets and rows

Giant set2: rows-flyes- burpees
5x(5rows+10flyes-10lb dbs+5burpees)- nor rest btw sets

Thoughts:
I think it was pwn who said this but I’ve found that perfect information is not always optimal. I was reading a conversation in a physics server where a poster was scared of taking diff eq next semester. I remember not being afraid of it NOT bc I was confident in my maths abilities, but bc I literally did not know that it was supposed to be extremely difficult. I thought it was just “the next maths course” that I needed to take. Of course things changed when I actually took it, but by that time I’d already registered and was too stubborn to quit. Looking back, If I’d known what it was, I probably wouldn’t have taken it no matter how much I liked my friend. This would make a VERY interesting experiment/model considering how much economics assumes that perfect information is most efficient → utility maximizing
@alex_uk i wanted to respond to your thoughts on training but didn’t want to clog up your log. I’d say that I don’t necessarily enjoy the physical feeling of training while I’m doing it but I derive a LOT of utility knowing that I CAN push myself. I also rely on my prior experience knowing that I’ve rarely ever regretted doing a workout but have always regretted skipping one. I am regret averse, so I usually get it done, even if it’s deadlift day and I have trouble bending over to put socks on because my hamstrings are pissed. This might change in the future though
Hey Anna, apologies I tend not to post in your log, I felt like I was mostly just adding to the train less eat more posts without any really construction.
That out of the way - never worry about clogging up my log, it’s always a welcome discussion, lists of exercises and pictures of my sweat marks only go so far…
I think you’re broadly in agreement with the conversation in my log, whilst I hated every second of training recently I don’t regret it, and it is absolutely useful to push oneself for the sake of it on occasion, the older I get the more I am able to push through the body telling me to give up, because I realise that it’s lying to me and that it always has more to give, a skill and knowledge that for me in particular might save a life.
The usual caveat applies thought, you can always demand more from your body, but your body will always demand more recovery - if those two don’t balance you won’t be able to push harder for long.
Tier 1 squat: 1x3-60,70,80,90; 1x2,2x1-95, 1x3-90, 2x5-85
Tier 2 beltless squats: 5x5-70, superset with 10rows/side-30lbs
RDL: 5x5-70
Tier 3 good mornings: 3x(9-40kg+10 lying leg raises)
Leg extensions: 3x(8-60lbs+20 plank hip drops)
Conditioning: 1-5-1 pull-ups with 2-10-2 burpees between sets
not as hard as expected and felt smooth, happy with 95kg for 2- I think I could have hit 3 tbh, the workout wasn’t hard to get through, pretty dead today
Tier 1 deadlift: 1x3-60,70,80,90,100; 1x2-110, 1x1-120, 1x1-115, will need to redo this workout on Tuesday
Bench: 1x3-30,30,50; 1x3, 2x2-55
Tier 2 press: 1x3-35, 2x3-40
Row: 3x4-45
superset: touch and go bench-press
5x(5touch and go-45+5press-30kg)
Tier 3 superset: lunges-row
5x(10alt lunges-50+5rows)
Superset: tricep pushdowns-face pulls
5x(10pushdowns+10dace pulls)-22.5lbs, no rest
Conditioning: 5x(10burpees+10air squats)
today’s workout was a big flop, felt good going in but it just wasn’t in the cards I guess. Not surprised given the squats Tuesday lol. The bench went quite well. The superset murdered me though, skimped on conditioning, pullups and burpees, will make up tomorrow
Update
@jshaving@cyclonengineer@SvenG I think I finally found a limit in terms of academic productivity. For the first time, I genuinely wanted to skip class. Even during the pandemic, I never seriously considered skipping class. I didn’t actually skip and am very glad I didn’t but that was a very foreign and unwelcome feeling. Good thing break is soon…
tomorrow is going to be crazy. 2 seminars, a maths group meeting(3hrs), then a homework group meeting
Knowing your limits is good—it helps you push past them.
At the same time, breaks are scheduled the way they are for a reason. (Or, rather, exam/assignment schedules are the way they are for a reason. The two go hand-in-hand.)
Please be sure to use your break for what it is—a break.
You’re probably just burnt out. I personally don’t think it’s the biggest deal ever to skip class once in a while. I wouldn’t make it a regular habit or use it as a way out of being responsible but I look at it like someone calling in sick to work. Sometimes you’ve reached your limit and need a day off.
Sorta depends on who you are. Plenty of kids in my classes who, besides approx. 15 hours of class a week that they show up for maybe 6 of, have nothing going on. Whereas you go to class, do your work, attend meetings, etc…
I don’t know. I’m sure it’s not a comfortable feeling but I wouldn’t worry about it too much (personally).
If this session was flop due to Tuesday’s being difficult and you not fully recovering… Why would you make up tomorrow for what you could not do? Seems like your body needs to recover to be able to perform for your main workouts.
But what was so bad about the deadlifts? What were you meant to hit?
Ahh, I think you’re misunderstanding. I meant making up the burpees and pullups, not deadlifts. I will be redoing those next tuesday when I’m better rested
The burpees and pullups are daily work
IDK honestly, they just felt extremely heavy and would not move. I was actually feeling pretty good going in, which is why i tried in the first place
felt a bit tired going in but squats moved VERY VERY well. I f-ing got 3 at 90kg BELTLESS @hustlinghat93
it’s crazy how light 60kg felt, rest of the workout went smoothly, leg extensions were really tough
Update:
OMG the econ seminar I attended today was amazing, I’ve never read a paper with such a well controlled field study- ahh Germans… The model was also so elegant
I’m hungrier than usual
I seem to be leaning out some, but haven’t lost weight
