From what I understand, the advisor is extremely important (just like having good/bad boss)
The grad students at my school that I’ve talked to say that their advisors are chill (two of them actually had kids while in grad school and their advisors let them have time off)
HOWEVER, one of my current research advisor’s colleagues had an ass of an advisor. Her father and brother died suddenly while she was in grad school and her advisor denied her time off, apparently that advisor was also known for making ppl quit
I honestly don’t think it’s that weird to be so goal-oriented/ defined. I’m not saying it’s the best way to be, but I certainly relate.
To cherry-pick one tiny point you made: don’t worry about stats like 5% acceptance rates; in any endeavor, 80% of people had no business applying in the first place.
I get that. But so that you can continue your passion for research, you’d rather… what? Beat your head against a brick wall day in and day out in an environment that may very well try and drive you away from it?
Just be cautious and understand, I mean really understand, the nature of the beast you’re looking at courting.
I forgot to address this; it’s a good start, but immersion through interaction will still trump observation, especially seeing that you are a human.
You have to be willing to actually look and actually listen and actually learn here too. Far too easy to just project your own assumptions onto others. Confirmation bias, etc. It’s one of the hardest things for me personally to disconnect what I think I know and actually listen to and learn from people.
Superset: press- pull-up
10x(10 military press-55lbs+3 pull-ups)- 3min rests
Rows: 2x10, 2x8, 2x6, all 75lbs, suppinated grip
4x(5 curls-20lb dbs,2020 tempo +30sec kickboxing/side+ 15sec rest)
felt pretty good going in, press felt really strong and very surprised how well it moved, press has been progressing strangely well lately, pull-ups also good, suppinated grip rows were harder than expected, especially on biceps, still got more curls in to meet curl club requirements
I am a little late to the party here but I will give on example of how insane some academics can be.
I have been volunteering with a team locally to try and combine technology with conservation for sea turtles here in Florida. When we met with key researchers from UCF, they totally missed what we were trying to do (help them collect better/more data) and were so afraid we would publish papers on the topic of sea turtles (even after repeatedly assuring them a bunch of engineers have no interest in sea turtle papers) that they led us down a path of “research” they were supposedly interested in that had already been completed for decades.
And when they realized we learned almost as much about turtle behavior in 3 months as they had spent their careers dedicated to learning, they were less than pleased.
Jump Squat: 5x5- bodyweight, 5x5-25lb Kb
Swings: 3x8-45lbs "Hardstyle
Kb press: 1x2/side-45lb @kdjohn You said it would take a while
Pullup: 6x1-10lbs, these sucked
felt pretty crappy going in, slept bad and gut’s been messed up- super bloated and puffy, up 3lbs again, decided to take advantage of my good knees and do some jumps- those were fun but got me a bit lightheaded so took long rest
I think I’m going to try another bucketlist workout tomorrow- 500 swings w/ the 45lbs
