There is some very good animes around. The one I liked most is Naruto (Shippuden) for its character development, story and action, and Samurai X. Samurai Champloo is also pretty awesome, with a very good story and characters. I tried Berserk but it all looked to old sadly. The thing I like about those samurai-animes, is that they try to explain everything with logic and try to keep it “real” - so nothing magic or supernatural. Samurai Champloo was the most realistic samurai-anime I have seen. As realistic as it gets when you fight so good that is.
I think I’m going to try Bleach soon, and Hellsing Ultimate ![]()
Yah Samurai Champloo was good. Samurai 7 was a short one (maybe 20 episodes) based on Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai from 1954, cool one to watch. You should check out Bleach, the first like 70 episodes are fucking great, then it turns to crap for maybe the next 50, but after that it comes back and it’s good again. We’re on 221 as of last wednesday, I’d recommend it.
Also, Yu Gi Oh blows.
I really liked cowboy bebop
Oh yeah, another “anime” i really liked was Spawn, based on the superhero comic book. A very bloody, but very good, tale. ![]()

Naruto was good, for about 60 episodes. After that it was all the same shit, over and over again. There’s actually very little charactar development in there…
I also reccomend Ninja Scroll (both the film and the series, it’s better to watch the film first).
There really are a lot of good animes out there.
Ok, here’s a lesser known anime that might interest you:
Hajime No Ippo, this is a story about a kid that learns to box and become one of the best. One of the only anime’s or shows that actually delve into just how hard you have to train to be a good fighter.
Also, you can view it all for free here:

x2
Once you finish the original series, you can watch the new sequel series that is still being released weekly! Hajime No Ippo: New Challenger.
For more adult themed manga I would recommend Berserk and Gantz, but skip the Anime for both of them.

If you enjoyed bebop I’d recommend Samurai Champloo, it’s from the same guy and is also very good.
Neon Genesis Evangelion isn’t too bad either, I think someone previously mentioned it. The last two episodes are fucking whack though.
It doesn’t look like anyone has mentioned Outlaw Star, which is probably one of my favorites tbh.
If you’re a fan of Ninja Scroll and Basilisk, you guys really need to check out Shigurui:Death Frenzy…its from the creators of Ninja Scroll and Black Lagoon.
Vampire Hunter D 1 & 2 are great flicks too.
berserk is awesome, really really great
Shin Angyo Onshi is great too, its somewhat similar to berserk
I was always a fan of 8 Man After. Violent as all hell w/a decent story line, but I don’t know if it’s just a stand alone movie, or an actually series.

Can anyone recommend some good non-cheesy manga? Preferably ones with loads of action, violence, fighting etc…[/quote]
The only manga I have ever liked is “Lone Wolf & Cub” and “Samurai Executioner”,by the writer Kazuo Koike and the artist Goseki Kojima. Both are currently published by Dark Horce Comics, Both series are published in English, in their original size format, and edited to read Left-to-Right.
Berserk is the only one I watched from beginning to end and loved every episode. Remember me and my little brother going fiending for that next episode like it was crack!!
I’m going to checkout those other ones to recommended fby you guys. I haven’t been into anime for a hot minute.

The Yagyu clan sets out to discredit the Shogun’s executioner, and claim his position thus expanding their sphere of influence and power. Ogami Itto doesn’t put up with that kinda crap and kills the Yagyu.
Outlaw Star was pretty cool. Big O wasnt bad either

Before Ogami Itto leaves Edo to begin his revenge against the Yagyu he offers his infant son, Daigoro, a choice. Choose the ball and Itto will slay his son, sending the infant to heaven to with his mother. If Daigoro chooses the sword then they will travel the assassin’s road into Hell together.
check out Garouden, its basically an MMA manga.
also. dragon fucking ball z
tentacle rape
Try Shura no Toki. It’s about 3 generations of a family of non-weapon-using fighters and how they get about to defeating the best (samurai) of their times. It blends a number of historical characters into the show, the most notable being Miyamoto Musashi. I thought it was pretty badass.
Gungrave, Getbackers, Tenjou Tenge, Rurouni Kenshin, Ikkitousen and Airmaster are all entertaining watches as well. Aside from Gungrave, these are all battle-orioented shows. Heads up: Don’t watch Ikkitousen when there are other people around!
Other shows that didn’t particularly hook me up: Blade of the Immortal, Queen’s Blade, Samurai Deeper Kyo. All these shows bored me out after the first 5-6 episodes, but you might like them. If you like Basilisk you’ll probably enjoy Blade of the Immortal.
Not fighting or violence related, but if you even remotely like Baseball, Major is a must see.
There’s also a new show called Pandora Hearts, it might not be so much about fighting but it looks promising.
Another samurai-type that has recently been airing is Examurai Sengoku, I only saw the first 3 episodes but it looks OK. Supposedly the characters are drawn versions of the creators or something (Exile Group) - Examurai Sengoku (TV) - Anime News Network.
I left out the shows already mentioned, but there are some damned good ones in the bunch. Berserk seems quite popular here. I thought it was very good save for the ending which totally creeped me out. And the manga is downright sick, in all senses of the word.
