In other countries, Western European countries no less, they have what’s known as the gendarmerie. It’s not just a militarized police force but actual military police. Americans are simply ignorant of the rest of the world.

This makes even less sense. I don’t get your point at all. If people aren’t intending to do you harm, why would it escalate the tactics and weapons used and why would it be wrong if your objective is to protect yourself from such harm?

You don’t know how SWAT trains. They have to be able to make a tactical entry in hostage situations and only shoot the bad guys. They just don’t start shooting.

Right. No cop or swat member has ever mistaken a comb/cellphone/kitchen knife for a deadly weapon.
When one side ups the capability for violence, so does the other. When police have more firepower, the rate of violent encounters increases.
I don’t know how SWAT trains, but I’m surprised that people actually believe the military is trained to only treat everyone as an enemy, not take civilians into account, and aren’t trained in non-violent means of crowd control.
And no doctor ever had a patient die because of a mistake.
Which is why surgeons don’t reccomend unnecessary surgery when rehab will do.
Who is the other side? Altar boys? Girl Scouts? Librarians?

If the police are getting shot at with weapons more advanced than theirs with the intent to do harm in the first place, why is it even surprising that they’re upping their game? Whomever wrote that piece has got this ass backwards.

So why do you think more violent encounters happened to a PD once they became more militarized?
I’d only want MJs doctor practicing on me in an emergency of last resort, not practicing on me everytime I got a booboo or worse.
Same with swat/AR packing gungho cops jumping out of APCs to go bang down doors over a few pot plants.
Gotta protect against that tyrannical gubbermint… Actually, I mean, it’s for hunting. 2nd amendment rights!!

How would I know? Maybe they really want to do them harm while PDs are being asked to hold back on using force?
I think it’s the same reason a smaller calm bouncer gets in less violent encounters than a big aggressive one.
