Just because you don’t want to answer the question doesn’t make it a fail on my part.

Poor Aussie confused our currency with our anthem.

Poor yank. Doesn’t know his own national anthem. I guess they just sing the short version at the football.

If the oath said “so help me Satan”, would you take it?

That’s an entirely different question. Many religious people actually believe in Satan so there is a compelling reason for them not to do so.

Fair enough. Would you swear an oath to the Flying Spaghetti Monster?

Depends. It might constitute idolatry in which case it would be a freedom of religion issue.

I’ve seen stories like this before. I’ll never understand why you would want to go out like that. It has to be horrific.

As far as the debate over a service member’s oath of enlistment goes, every service member is require to state aloud the oath verbatim at initial enlistment and every subsequent re-enlistment.

“I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.”

If those enlistees couldn’t repeat a sentence (that ultimately means nothing to them anyway) without question how in God’s name do people think the’ll be able to take orders when it matters the most?

The military =/= civilian world. You do not get to just do what you want.

If you don’t like it, change it. Until then shut up.

Members of the U.S. Air Force will no longer be required to say ?so help me God? during their enlistment oath.

A legal review of rules that required the phrase occurred after the American Humanist Association threatened to sue on behalf of an atheist airman. The unnamed airman at Creech Air Force Base in Nevada was denied re-enlistment Aug. 25 after crossing the phrase out of the oath.

Pinchy would be so proud. I’m surprised they even bother to offer corrections at this point. With their struggles, they should just turn into a full-blown editorial. The New Yorker Left.
