thought i should mention, i dont follow the AD’s carbup schedule. i carb up whenever i feel my body needs it. whether it be 7 days, 10 days, hell sometimes 4 days, i carb up when i need it. i get better workouts and still get lean. and its only a 1 hr time frame i carb up, not 24-36 hours. thought i should mention this
I wanted to reread the Anabolic Diet and found that there are two other similar titles by Di Pasquale, the Metabolic Diet and the Anabolic Solution for Bodybuilders. Is there one that is preferred over the others? Are there any main differences?
Also, how does this compare to the Ultimate Diet 2.0 by Lyle McDonald?
As I read it the kals x BW stays same in all 3 phases. All I read was the original book by Dr Di maintenence phase is 18x BW, Mass phase is 20-25x competition BW, cutting phase is -1000 to 500 kals each week until 1.5-2lbs of weight loss happens. The cutting phase was’nt to clear to me so if Im wrong here someone chime in. I’ve really never been able to eat that much Im ussually around 12-15x BW Im more trying to cut so it seems to work plus Im scared eating that much will make me fat
I have a few questions for the long term AD lifers if you don’t mind.
I’ve been doing some form of a CKD for cutting phases for years, whether it be Body Opus, 2.0 or the AD. There are many aspects of these diets that I really like such as improved body comp, the much improved mental alertness(no day time groggyness at all), much deeper sleep and requirement for less of it, etc.
There are some aspects that I do have trouble dealing with and was hoping you guys could help me out.
Even after adapting to it even though I feel mentally energized my body feels very tired and sluggish. Is this a calorie issue being that when doing this diet I kept calories low to cut? Or am I really not adapting to fat burning? Monday and tuesday workouts are ok due to full glycogen stores from carb up. By the end of the week though I’m fried from low muscle glycogen and low blood sugar. Maybe huge carb up is throwing me off in regards to blood sugar because I’ve tried smallish carb ups and did better during the week with blood sugar.
I have a huge problem with constant frequent large volumes of urination. I can’t stop going to the bathroom. Even when carbing up the urination doesn’t stop till my third carb day. Is this normal and just something you guys deal with?
This question relates to my first one. Even walking up a flight of stairs my thighs start burning with lactic acid. What is the cause of this, how do I stop this and is it lactic acid build up or something else?
How do you guys set your carb intake during the week? Does everyone stay under 30 grms or do some of you go a little higher in the 75grm range like the book mentions? And what about overall caloric intake, are guys guys just using the book formula or finding you get fat and need to adjust? Because going by that formula its a hell of a lot of calories, for me anyway.
I know saturated fat is not as bad as it’s made out to be and it depends on the context in which you eat it ie constant high insulin and carbs vs no carbs etc, but are you guys intentionally trying to eat a certain ratio of different types of fats mono/sat/polyunsta for health reasons etc?
And last, for the people who have read the book DiPasqual mentions that you don’t want to be in ketosis, you instead want to burn free fatty acids which you eventually do once adapted to fat burning. If I stay under 30 grms I’m in ketosis. This is confusing to me because I look at it as the same thing because your burning fat still. Can someone explain the difference?
Sorry for long post but I’ve been looking for these answers for years. Thanks guys.

I tried multiple small carb ups earlier than 7 days apart but felt that i was putting on too much fat. I feel fine throughout the week but if I need it i’ll just take a tablespoon of olive oil and that really helps me.
Glycogen stores water. When you run out of it your body just flushes water through and I go to the bathroom quite often and I’ve just gotten used to it.
no idea
I don’t count my calories from carbs to a T - If i had to guess I might be getting some from veggies and maybe an occasional light sauce i put on meat maybe 30-45 calories but nothing huge. The calories I eat on a carb up day are all up to me - however much my body feels like putting into it. Its normally oatmeal in the morning with a whole bunch of fruit (to slow my insulin + serotonin spike and then whatever else i want (typically pretty clean).
With most meals (meat w/ veggies I put either a cheese or olive oil in it - most of the time both. Throughout the day to keep me going i’ll sometimes take a tablespoon of olive oil and i take fish oil daily. I eat most of the fat from my steaks/beefs.
amazing question someone else has gotta answer that

ok so for the past 2-3 months i have been doing 6 days <30g carbs per day with a high carb day on sunday but never really did the 12 day induction phase so i wanted to make sure i was properly fat-adapted.
my last carb-up was about 10 days ago and after my session today, i took my beater off and it REEKED of ammonia!
i have had high BUN levels in the past but i was always dehydrated from not drinking during the night when i got the labs done…
any advice?
The ammonia smell means you’ve gone into ketosis. Once you resume the carb-ups the smell should go away.
yeah i figured it would go away witht he carb ups, the only thing that was bothering me was the fact that i read through the first 55 pages of the original Anabolic Diet thread (and this thread for that matter) and dont remember once reading about someone else sweating ammonia
It’s more common on full keto diets. My friend (not a lifter) ate Atkins-style for a few years and was stricken with ammonia armpits. It happened to me as well when I did my adaptation phase, but I didn’t sweat it too much (pun intended) because it happened to me before (although that was because I drank far too much coffee and not enough water).
Also, I was pretty strict with the carbs during my induction and I knew about the whole keto thing. Didn’t really consider it an issue at the time.
As a side note, I do wonder how many people skip the induction phase completely. I read about some guy on other forum who skipped it because he felt he “was already fat adapted” even though he wasn’t coming on to the AD from low-carb eating.
P.S. Since you should be back on the carbs, has the ammonia smell gone?

Di Passquale just re-branded the AD for the general public with the “Metabolic Diet”, and the AS4BB is supposedly just the AD with a few additions (I haven’t read it). Its just marketing.
UD2 is similar to the AD, but it is based on the UD, which was written in the early 80’s by Michael Zampuno (sp?) and Duchaine. It was the original CKD which utilized a 10 day instead of a 7 day cycle.

Yeah, the Metabolic Diet and the Anabolic Solution for Bodybuilders are updated versions of the original AD, just integrating Dr. Mauro’s supplement line.
I dont seem to be loosing much fat but I am getting bigger and stronger on AD. When I started I was only eating about 12 x Body weight. I never really could seem to eat more than 15xbw is that bad?

i hate you all who get bigger and stronger on the AD. i get weak as fuck and small, but lean, which is the only reason i do it. 15xbw on the AD is a piece of cake with oils. olive oil, mac nut oil, coconut oil. all pack a punch of +- 135 cals/tblsp.
I’ll try that I just eat meat, cheez, and eggs usually. Don’t know why you feel week. Maybe your not eating enough fat. When your at 50-60% fat you should feel good. I did paleo for about 4 months before doing the AD but even then I felt fine with low/no carbs, but when at 60% fat for the day my energy was primo then and now.
Hey guys, just wanted to ask the AD vets a question about the carb up days.
Atm Im trying to lean out and am at BW x 12 for kcals daily(2100) with one carb up day on a saturday.
During the ;ast 3 carb up days I havent set a Kcal limit and have ended up anywhere between 4000 - 5000 Kcals(all from clean foods like rice, potato and bananas etc).
My question is that since imt rying to lean out should I be setting a kcal limit on my carb up day?

Have you lost weight the last 3 weeks?
I actually gained 4 lbs but lost an inch from my waist.
Don’t ask me how that works because I personnally have no idea.
Been on the AD for a month. Scale weight have dropped 3-4 pounds, but I have increased the weight in also every compound lift! I am definity harder and more defined. I am still tweaking it, since I probably consume 50-60 carbs Mon thru Fri. I carb up a full day Sat and Sun until 3pm.
The energy boost is incredible, but I don’t feel like doing SHIT on Sat nights!
Never keep a food log before and now I do. What an eye opener that is. For years I overestimated the amount of protien a THOUGHT I consumed. I weigh 180 and take in 200-220 and I eat meat 4x a day…
someone put this up a while back and it never got an answer so i just thought i’d re-post it:

I’ve been doing the anabolic diet off and on for years and will take a few weeks off the diet every year. I’ve been back at it hard for 2 1/2 months and trying to lose weight. Weight loss has been slower than ever and I keep getting sick with sinus infections and colds. I’ve also been sweating more than I ever have while working indoors.
Here’s some extra info.
I lift 4 days a week and do liss 5 days a week.
Calories are between 12x BW and 15x BW with a 45-55 ration of protein to fat and only 1 carb up day a week.
Fats are mostly poly and mono-unsaturated.
Carb day: 10% fat; 25% protein; 65% carbs (oats, potatoes, etc., 1 cheat meal).
Any ideas to why I’m not losing weight and keep getting sick?

who knows? maybe losing fat and gaining muscle? i cant really help you with that one but 3000 mg vitamin C a day has helped me keep sick free for the last 7 months
@MAF14: Thanks for the feedback. I’ll have to give the vitamin C a try. I’ll probably go get a decadron shot tomorrow or next Monday but start vitamin C today.
I dont know if you guys get this but M-F my guts are cool I poop 1 maybe 2 a day no problems. On my carb up days SA\SU all I do is poop and fart. Im pretty clean with my carbs but since pizza beer and junk food are ok I do partake in it. Also Im like tiered bloated and lazy during carb up days. Do you guys get that too?
Hey Ryuu try a multi vitamin 2 a day and eat more green leafy stuff. That should help a bit with imune system also stay hydrated. Power aid 0 cal 4XION has no carbs and a bunch of good stuff in it. Im in the same boat as you I get bigger & stronger on AD but getting shreded isn’t as easy.
