way to go with the prs, its nice to see all the hard work manifest itself

Thanks wasBr0k3n. Last night was just an amazing night. Completely beyond what I was expecting/hoping for in PR terms.

Congrats, I only wish I could say the same ![]()
Good stuff. You’re doing press reps with 165 which I’m sure makes your single over your BW. Any one doing overhead press with more than their bw is doing damn good.

yeah he must have some melons for shoulders, impressive
Good to see the PR’s piling up! Great shoulder pressing.

I dunno - the shoulders are tricky on that. I’ve been here before: tripling 165 but missing singles at 175. Not that I’m missing singles right now, but the heavier weight sometimes requires different form to make it work. I think my set up is good these days and that I MIGHT be able to get 185 off my shoulders for a single…

Thanks! Eating makes the difference.

That used to happen to me too, getting two or three reps at one weight, not being able to get a single at 5 pounds more. I started doing all my shoulder presses from a dead stop instead of using the stretch reflex. Since then there has been a more normal gap between the various rep maxes.
Nice work on the recent prs.

Remember: I’m small, so I only to have grapefruits for shoulders…

Exactly. And I did change to pressing from a dead stop some while back for that very reason - consistency and predictability. Interestingly, the partial-range seated work I’m doing is carrying over to the standing full range - but what I think is having the most impact is the ab wheel rollouts. Having to stabilize/flex the abdomen in extension on the ab wheel is helping me be solid in the full press.
Your un-sportsmen-like habit of increasing your over head press, making it more difficult for me to match, is really leaving a sour taste in my mouth.
On a seperate note, I made my own "Skidmark flaming ab wheel of death with 10’s on the end of al olympic bar. Question. Do you use gasoline or lighter fluid? I tried lighter fluid, and I think the heat and smell really improved the dynamic contraction in my anterior core.
Appreciate your time.

You’ll go through a lot of training outfits that way…
I recommend contacting the Honorable Congress of American Stuntmen to get a listing of flame-resistant clothing vendors.
edit:
And as I keep saying - It’s not my fault! 1Geech started the whole ab wheel craze.
2008-11-6
Bench-a-liscious
2.6 Board Height Pin Press
140x10
165x8
215x3
265x2
285x2,1+0 (2nd rep didn’t even come off the pins)
265x5,4,4 (PR reps but what the heck is up with the 285?)
Speed Bench
140x27+3 (rp) (No PR but good things are happening in the right shoulder/pec on this)
Close Grip Bench
215x2 (not there today)
190 3x5
So I gotta cut back on my back and pressing work on Assistance day. Not leaving anything for bench. I seriously considered not benching today and taking another rest day.
I’m cutting back to 2-3 sets of overhead pressing and 3 sets of rows only on Assistance day. Next assistance day will be a shoulder circuit rather then OHPs, so I may have more energy for the following bench day. We’ll see.

I should have thought of that when I was trying to get flames by just working my abdominals too hard.
I’ll try to find a link to the annual flaming turkey throw. I’m sure Carl has heard of it. Sounds like it may be right up yawls alley.

still whore’n i see.
I hear you on the over head pressing. i bench on mondays and then overhead press on wendsdays. i’ve started to have the reverse problem that you have- my shoulders are too fried to do any heavy overhead work. i haven’t really done any super heavy overhead work in awhile but my bench variations continue to improve. that tells me that i don’t need to be hitting heavy overhead work right now anyway. i know for a fact that the heavy overhead work has improved my bench in the past, but right now i don’t need it. if i find that my bench variations start to stagnate i may start rotating each week between a RE bench and ME overhead and vis versa.
i think that to continually improve, priority needs to be placed in different areas at different times.
when it comes to raw powerlifting, I know that i can’t improve all three of my lifts at the same time. I have to pick and choose what i concentrate on. right now i’m concentrating on the bench and deadlift. my squat day is a RE day.
the body is a fickle thing, isn’t it?

It is indeed, or may just seem that way until one learns it’s particular responses to training and other stimuli.
I’m fortunate so far that my bench is not stalling, really, it’s just not improving as fast as I want. I’m doing significantly more work in bench than I was capable of even two months ago and with only a slight weight gain.
I’d really like to see my squatting improve more as well. I think systemically I’m doing too much with my little additions to your program and just really need to take it down to the basic routine, eat like mad and everything should improve.

I thought you were jesting but for giggles I googled it and got this:

Freaky. I like the line about getting to play with your food…
Well, my gym went out of business. Closing their doors on Dec 1.
The good news is that anyone taking over the business is going to want to replace that equipment and so I may be able to score a squat rack for cheap and maybe some 45 and 100 lb plates.
We’ll see.
Got to find another gym in the meantime.
