Laura and I just watched this documentary recently. We were impressed with the material and the presentation of it.
I’m curious as to what some of you think about the climate change issue. I’m relatively young, so this seems to be reinforcing what we were taught in school. Needless to say, I was very surprised when I talked to some friends of mine that are a little older.
They said that when they were younger, people were talking about how they’re going into another ice age because it’s so cold, and that climate change is just another “The sky is falling” theory that is to be dismissed.
What does T-Nation think? How much involvement should our government have? Do you believe that we’re damaging our atmosphere? What solutions are there?
I’m sure this has been discussed on these forums before, but I’m specifically wondering if anyone truly believes that we should ignore this.

Interesting fact: Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth was the only book found in the Unibomber’s cabin when he was arrested.
That said, global warming is very real. It is due in part to the natural cycle of things and in part to human intervention. However, we aren’t all going to die from it. That’s silly. Mankind will figure out how to adapt and survive. It isn’t as big of a deal as it’s made into.

that makes no sense. the unabomber was arrested in the 90s… and ‘an inconvenient truth’ was published like a year or two ago.
That said, the giant asteroid is very real. It is due in part to the natural cycle of things and in part to orbital collision. However, we aren’t all going to die from it. That’s silly. Dinokind will figure out how to adapt and survive. It isn’t as big of a deal as it’s made into.

T-Rex, circa 65 billion BC.
You’re an idiot. The T-Rex couldn’t talk. Duh.
It might have been a Diplodocus impersonating a T-Rex then…

Global warming is not a scientific fact as Gore would have you believe. The fact is that they have not had instruments to measure the temperate for that long. So there is no way to accurately determine if it is really warmer or just a warm cycle. But Al is just using this for publicity like always to try and scare people into voting democrat.
The actual concern is pollution. Whether GW exists or not is irrelevant. Pollution needs to be better managed so we can just breath. So we do need to clean up the environment, but using unproven pop science to scare people is not the way to do it.

oh no, you’re talking about science, facts, theories, and proof again? didn’t you get spanked hard enough in the creationism thread?
global warming is a fact. the earth is getting warmer. period. not debateable. if you want, you can disagree with the theories postulating as to WHY the earth is getting warmer…
why do you always type so much and say so little?
100% of your posts come down to, ‘it’s not science, i know what science is, it’s just a theory’. can you ever say anything of substance? i’m not trying to flame you, i’m just being serious. stop positioning yourself as a sceintific individual when you clearly aren’t.

On the plus side, global warming is somewhat self limiting.
Anyone who lives or has driven through any part of the western US or Canada has seen the millions of rust-brown pine trees that are being killed by pine beetles. Enough trees die every day to build five new houses.
An ongoing drought prevents the trees from making enough sap to fend off the beetles, and the warming trend has kept if from freezing deep and long enough to kill them off. Once that millions of acres of dead standing timber starts to burn it will be impossible to control or extinguish.
The smoke will blanket the northern hemisphere, blocking the sun’s rays and triggering a global cool down. So in reality the current global warming trend is going to trigger the next ice age.
Also on a cheery note, scientists are looking into the possibility that a giant “burp” of sulfurous gases released from the oceans is what caused the mass extinction of dinosaurs, rather than a meteor hit. The “burp” was released when atmospheric carbon dioxide reached a certain level, and we should be at that same level again in another 100-200 years if present trends continue.
So after the glaciers retreat 10,000 years from now, some new life form will spring up and start inventing things like fire and wheels, and the whole cycle repeats.

Hey, it’s a global warming thread, you’re allowed be off by orders of magnitude and still be ‘right’.

and global warming isn’t a partisan issue.
The fact is the temperature has only been accurately MEASURED since 1850. Anything older than that is an estimate NOT MEASURED! So the fact is that the earth’s surface air temp has gotten warmer since 1850.
Anything beyond that is just an estimation. It could be a long standing trend or a normal cycle. There is not enough MEASURED data to know accurately.
So now that you have been schooled again, run along, your mother is calling you for dinner.
Ps - Not political? Where have you been, under a rock? Maybe you were just a baby then and missed the Kyoto Summit on Climate in the 1990’s. Not political, what a retard.
