An Apology

Ok, I’m one of the most pounded people on this site and I say let the pounding continue. It made me grow up and realize a lot of things that were wrong with my protocols. We all need wake up calls sometime. Also the general pattern is that most of the pounding is insinuated by both ignorant and unintelligent people so it’s often quite fun to laugh at many of the posts; for example Light Power. And those that are intelligent and not as hidebound often turn the disgraceful forums into something useful (for example the softer side thread eventually became a very helpful thread in terms of advancing myself in the weight room whereas it started as a very bashing thread towards me).

Also, on the issue of ego; it’s often quite fun to see these ignorant people post such incoherent nonsense because it makes all of us feel better that we know what they do not. While it’s rather upsetting that people such as this inhabit this site; in general most knowledgeable members here are didactic and willing to help them. If they choose to heed not this advice, then so be it.

sorry to hijack–I think I’m hijacking?–but I wanted to comment on PP’s post. I must say (as someone who hasn’t been always nice to Jason (I refuse to say “as one who’s also pounded Powda”), one of the things that I really admire is how well he always deflects and accepts, turning it into a joke or keeping on with whatever he was doing. I’ve never seen him resort to name calling or the other stupid crap that so many of us do. And so, while I won’t stop er…pounding him once in a while , I have been meaning to let him know it was in fun and that I admired him.
If we could all manage to be more like him, stuff like this wouldn’t be necessary.

I have to agree with Zeb. I come here to read the articles, help some powerlifters, and learn from the articles. As a powerlifter, I have basically been made to feel unwelcome by many members, even in the Strength Sports Forum.

Debate, and even arguing, are great things. A thread of 50 insults against powerlifters simply chases good people away and adds nothing positive to the board.

I feel their is a huge difference between censorship and moderation. I think moderation of personal attacks and insults would be a good thing.

Of course, I’m just a fat powerlifter, so maybe my opinion doesn’t count…LOL

Why would anyone think that some troll who is attacking someone from behind a keyboard, is acting in any way “manly”? I think it’s just the opposite, it’s cowardly!

Would the person who called the Powerlifter fat say that to his face? No way! The reason that that wouldn’t happen is because he would be afraid of a physical confrontation, or in other words: a beating! And there in lies the reason why message boards such as this one need to be policed. There are no serious repercussions (like a beating) to attacking someone on a message board.

T-Nation needs to enforce their stated web site rules: “No attacks or personal vendettas. We need to gurantee that no one will get hammered for what they post.” When those words were written down you guys had a good idea of what was to come, and you were right!

I have no problem with someone calling another member out on a point that he or she made. However, the multitude of personal attacks, and attacks on someone else’s training methodologies (such as the ones against the Powerlifters) should end. They serve no legitimate purpose, other than to annoy others. Worst of all they are perpetrated from behind the safety of a computer screen. That’s not T-Man behavior, it’s COWARDLY!
Just replace unnecessarily negative posts with some more pics of that chick in the Powerful Images from a couple weeks ago. The one with great breasts that looked kinda young. I love her.

I think if they keep up unnecessary comments throughout multiple threads, that they should be warned like any troll.

Read TC’s “Boys to Men” article.

quote from the article:
“They want to show that they’re courageous, but courage has become confused with violence or the promise of violence; manliness has become confused with aggressive posturing. They’ve fallen in love with machismo.”

I have to admit, I spend more time on other boards- you know - the ones that actually discuss training, problems with shirts, etc…

it is a community, and with all communities, the board will police itself, generally by turning as a group on to any bullhockey.

Then, unless the person wishes to stay in that discussion and fight, then so be it. they have the choice to go away, as do all others that post.

most times threads eventually wear out and die of their own accord, unless 2 people get into it.

in that case, people will leave it alone.

In the case of lightpowers thread, and what happened there, i would suggest that this is as reasonable way of censoring, as it does go towards some kind of general concencous

From what I’ve seen in the strength forum, it is usually only 3 or 4 people who are really acting like retards (ie he should squat 1000lbs pounds four times, or his suit adds 700lbs to his bench). Is it possible to ban these people from a forum such as Strength Sports for a short time (a week or so)?

I come here for training advice, and I personally don’t want to have to sift through 3 pages of inane crap before someone who actually knows something about powerlifting says makes a comment. These people add nothing to the site, and always argue the same crap. If they have something ligit to discuss that’s fine, but otherwise they get Dr Ryan’s Dickhead of the Week Award.

A favourite in this section is the agruements about using gear. If you want to have a discussion on gear, do not start off with “Powerlifters are fat bastards who can’t sit down to shit without a suit on”. Use your fucking heads. Discuss, argue, have heated discussions, but don’t log on, attack people, and expect to be welcomed or considered as part of the T-Nation community.

Rant over.

TC,

I say that when it becomes apparent that the person is being an ass clown, T-Nation admin should post the following picture along with the statement:

Congratulations (screen name) you have just been nominated as ASSHOLE OF THE WEEK. Your post(s) have brought down the collective IQ of T-Nation to the point that we are now dangerously close to riding the short bus to school.

Future posts from this person would all have ‘Former ASSHOLE OF THE WEEK’ appended to them, like a tag line. Sort of like Bill Engvall’s “Here’s your sign” bit. That way everyone could immediately know what they are dealing with. If the person demonstrates the ability to work and play well with others, the tag line could be removed after a period of time.

ASSHOLE OF THE WEEK could be voted on in the T-Nation war room if people would like more control over the situation.

Winner’s could be sent a coupon for free Soy protein from GNC.
That’s awesome man!!! You could even give black-eyed tags to the brutally insulted!

Anyways, I’ve noticed who the “Mystery Profile” insulters are and aparently it must stem from being inadequate in some shape or form (no pun intended). I wouldn’t spend time replying back to those individuals because you’re wasting your breath! They don’t care who they offend and are just reaching out for attention. Just don’t give them the attention they seek. We are grown-ups here, well most of us, and sure we get tired of immaturity but that’s all part of growing up. Some people used to wet the bed when they were tots and well… it seems some ppl are still letting their bladder’s spew out of control.

I was drawn to T-Nation because of its products and “Useful” tips on nutrition, lifting, and body-sculpting. I like the products I’m using from T-Nation and they kick ass!

I wouldn’t focus so much on ppls feelings being hurt T-Nation, I would focus on who’s buying your products and who’s not! Who’s posting useful advice and who’s not. Who’s looking for advice on nutrition and not on insulting comments toward potential buyers!

This is a professional site and needs to stay that way! If it degrades anymore than it is now potential buyers of your products will not take them serious, or this site for that matter. Because afterall, everything is a joke on this site right??

Think about that… I wouldn’t worry about censoring. You need to focus on the individuals who are rusting the very steel-beams that hold-up this site! Even, if they have been here too long. Time is money!

the asshole of the week tag is a solid choice.

an option that AIM uses to warn and eventually block the user off (based on IP or mac address for those who think they are smart and try and use mutlitple accounts) when they have offended or whatever. it takes a bunch of votes and its pretty nifty.

on censorship. i might be wrong because i just learned about this in my communication law class but once you start censoring you are legally held liable for content. so if someone comes after you for libel you could be held accountable. check with your lawyers. there was a case of this from some place like prodigy. we did not cover it very well and i can not find it in my notes or book.

i would go with oliver wendel holmes one and let the “marketplace of ideas” preside and eventually equlibrium will be met.

for those of you who dont know what that is let me repeat the previously stated… “dangerously hardcore”

I like Dr. Ryan’s idea. Or an asshole of the week avatar. I hate especially when overly defensive young punks drop in on new member’s threads who are genuinely seeking advice and insult. This way the new poster would know they can take it with a grain of salt.

One more opinion: censorship is as abhorrent as some of the asinine posts; I think that the forums usually work well in smacking down gross offenders plus it can be humorous.

Leave open the option of awarding “asshole of the week” or maybe “dickhead of the day”

back when I was 16 or so, Hustler had a column called “asshole of the month”, which I assume they still have. They also had the honorable mention category “farts in the wind”.
I like that…farts in the wind.

Would it be possible to just ban certain members from posting in the strength forum? Those that simply go there to make derogatory remarks and have nothing inteligent to add to strength sport discussions simply should not have the ability to post there.

I am a strong willed woman. I am willing to contribute to threads about the sport that I love despite the fact that I usually get put down for doing so. Because I speak my mind I receive some derogatory remarks and personal attacks. Big deal…I can type lots of mean things too. More than anything the personal attacks make me laugh because I know they wouldn’t happen in the “real world”.

I love being able to put a female’s perspective on this sport for the other members and would love to continue to do so if the discussions were productive.

the real problem is…these people that are posting these things have no clue…and it gets annoying…i dont like censorship but how would you guys like it if my fat ass went up to the nutrtion area of ths site and kept saying you guys dont need to diet just drink cell tech and eat pizza…i have no clue about nutrtion just like these folks have no clue about powerlifting gear…the thing is i never ever see powerlifters go up there and diss bodybuilders or fitness guys…why do they have to come here and do it to us???..rb

fuck it lets get a rogue mod who ban’s people out of sheer ill will and deletes threads maliciously…then we can just shift all the blame to him…

Vote XenNova for Rogue Mod 2005

-Xen

No censoring on the message boards. That’s one small step onto a slippery slope leading only to bad things.

Slight hijack: Big Martin, slide on over to the Nutrition section for a sec.

TC,

How can you censure stupidity or ignorance? How much time and money are you willing to spend to censure a few?

Even if you figured out rules and procedures to follow, those types of traits always seem to bubble up to the surface.

Now if you could figure out a way to send an electric choc to the keyboard to those ignorant people, that would be a very cool thing…

I think it’s time to get a defined layout for the site. Get rid of all things that are unnecessary. That would include all the pointless post being made.

There needs to be a faq or something for each major workout and nutrition program that is on the site.

TC,

if you want me to be honest… here it is. the strength sports of T-Mag is pretty much pointless. it honestly drives off numerous people who resort to other actual strength oriented sites. the problem lies in the undeniable fact that members of T-Mag with other goals come here and insult anybody who has goals contrary to theirs.

joking around is fine. deliberate personal attacks on members here and other pl’rs or strongmen or what have you is simply unwarranted. most actual pl’rs here display a thick skin, myself included.

however, if you could tell me what the actual point of reading and posting in this section is when the vast majority of it is flaming?

the saddest part about it is that you’ll never see a pl’r from here in a thread insulting a pretty boy who just works out for abs and girls, which this site is abundant of. i respect all goals.

my honest suggestion is to simply close down the strength section of this website. once long ago there was no strength section, as you know, and it was “better” that way. while i know you judge, or have made implications that T-Mag judges the worth of a section by # of hits, i feel it’s misguided in this area. the most hit threads are the ones full of flames and stupidity.

it drives off more people than you think. pl’rs & strength seekers alike just need to accept that while T-Mag has attempted to be diverse… it’s really not. it’s a pretty straight forward physique dominated site.

I guess as a group you let your perfromances speak for themselves, and in being the pursuit it is, are focused on your goals. this can only be a good thing.

true about the flaming, look at quadthefinest. I was a guilty member there. (fun though)

how about a flame toilet. when something turns into a flame fest, it gets redirected intoa flame dump. people who have been on it before have access, but to the form as a whole, it is gone.

Do the “have the technology”
