I have read some of the others here and felt lucky that I never really saw anything in my gym that was like what others saw. A few days ago that changed.
There was a guy doing decline bench. I have never seen him in the gym before. He was using the cambered bar that you would use for greater range of motion. I found out he was using it to keep from bumping his head as he laid back. He proceeded to do what would maybe be a 1/8th rep for a set of 10. Added weight and repeated for 3 sets. He moves to incline and does the same thing. Then I see him go do pullups. He continued 1/8th reps there but made it a full body wiggling movement thing. Then he did dips and maybe made it a 1/10th rep and actually moved more from his shoulders moving up and down than from elbow flexion.
What are people like this thinking?!?!? Why waste the time in the gym?!?!? What in the blue hell?!?!?
yea, like the guy that does 405 lb upright rows at my gym. he’s like fifty something, and does these jump/squat/upright row kinda things. on the smith machine of course.he bends at the knees, and jumps up while attempting to upright row all that weight. the smith machine starts shaking out of control, you can tell when he starts because you can hear all the noise.he does the same type of movement on the shrug machine as well. it’s always good for a laugh.

Could he be doing high pulls?
I still don’t get why he’d do them in the smith machine though.
They’re out there everywhere…Just remember that everyone was a beginner once. If he looks like he might be interested in advice, try to give it and see if he responds. If he doesn’t than he gets what he deserves, wont’ see progress, quit in a week, and you won’t have to deal with him ever again…until the next one comes along.

Sounds like high pulls to me and 405 is pretty beastly. Not sure why one would do them in a smith machine but if he’s using 405 who the hell am I to tell him he’s doing something wrong.

I don’t get it.

It sounds SOMEWHAT like serratus, lower trapezius work and stabilizing scapulas . . . but NOT excactly.
Please ask next time you see him!

with all the funny stuff you see at the gyms these days, one could make a movie script about this and make millions. Imagine the comedy, You could call it Humping Iron. LOL
Saw a great one today! Hope I can do it justice with text. While I’m doing my warm-up on the recumbant bike, I see this kid in the open squat rack with two plates on the oly bar and the bar resting on the portion that is about 3 feet off the ground. He grabs it with both hands, palms supinated, and I’m thinking “he’s gonna try and curl this?” Not really, but what he does all takes place at once so I’ll try and be clear.
He jerks the bar upward while shooting up on his tip-toes, bending his elbows slightly and rotating his shoulder in a half-circular motion posteriorly (no real upward movement of the trap to speak of).

Shrug? Curl? Calf raise? You decide.
Acutally, it’s called a Shralf Curaise.
It’s on page 51 of last month’s Muscle and Frightness in the article “Bomb Your Body With This Two Minute Wonder-Workout!”

Is it a power shrug? An aborted power clean?
I’d like to think he was trying to shrug, but like I stated, his traps weren’t moving upwards at all. He didn’t come up nearly far enough for it to have been considered an aborted power clean (would one do those with a supinated grip?). He had no back arch, so I know he wasn’t trying to curl (not that this skinny little twig could even approach the weight he was using), and since he repeated this movement many, many times I can only assume this is what he meant to do.
