Almonds vs. ZMA

Also, raw eating in general has been on my mind ever since I read Muscle, Smoke, and Mirrors, and I’ve been ever-so-gradually trying to incorporate it. I’m up to four raw eggs three times a day, and had raw steak for the first time today at lunch (1/3 pound of top round. Not terrible, but not amazing.) I’ll see how things go in the gym tonight.
I’m very interested in raw eating but as most of our meat is mass produced/processed I would be concerned with all sorts of shit coming into contact with it before it reached my mouth! Now if I could source my meat from a reputable source, knowing how the animal was reared and processed then I think this would be a fantastic way to up your health.

Did you eat a store bought steak or did you take the time to source it? Just curious because it takes some balls to eat raw meat in this day and age!

Magnesium and calcium can compete for absorption in the body. Separating them by an hour or so should be fine. For example, instead of washing down your ZMA capsules with a protein shake, have one or the other about an hour earlier.
I have heard this. Yet, calcium + magnesium is a very popular supplement. Why would they package them together?

That’s interesting Chris. I had consistently been having 50g whey with 2 raw eggs before bed and sleep has been awesome.
If you don’t mind my asking, why whey and not casein before bed?

So i’ve read a lot about ZMA and I curent;y take Melatonin to sleep (had sleeping problems for years) and I was wondering if any of you guys have used both and what you prefer. ZMA sounds like it might be a bit betetr, but does it help you fall alseep or just sleep better once you do?

So as not to continue the hijack, the raw talk now has its own thread:

Some forms of magnesium are absorbed efficiently enough that calcium doesn’t interfere (for example, the magnesium in ElitePro Mineral Support). So that could be one reason.

The more common reason, which is kinda disheartening, is that they’re thrown into formulas together just because “they’re supposed to be in there.” Or more simply put, absorption is secondary to sales. The best that some companies can do is to try tweaking the dosages, 2:1 calcium:magnesium, to try to counteract some of the interaction.

I just say whey out of habit, it’s 75% whey and 25% casein blend.
