Alex_uk: 40 years in the making

Oh for sure, I don’t keep up much just happen to know those 2 nuggets of info I got through my daily casual news check (I get daily briefings from both my jobs and don’t open either of them) - it’s too much to keep up with the latest and it won’t change anything, so it’s not worth the mental space!

Yeah, this coronavirus thing has really opened my eyes to how much time and energy people (including me), waste on shit that just doesn’t matter, or that they can’t control. Helped me take the plunge and hide my facebook from view, among other things.

Hasn’t helped me ignore my receding hairline though, is that a side effect of Covid?

I hard deleted Facebook the other day, not used it in years and realised there’s some old stuff on there I’d rather didn’t see the light of day again. It’s crazy how much people see into each others lives these days (even the carefully curated view) causes so many issues in relationships, and long term cannot be good for mental health.

I definitely waste time, and need to manage my procrastination and time better - without getting obsessive and trying to make every second of the day productive “trying to live my best life now” (I hate that phrase!).

Oh and the hair, that’s definitely covid and this comment is online - therefore you saw it online so it must be true!

Also whilst I’m here procrastinating thought I’d track my macros so far today:

My diet is still dreadful haha, it’s fine I’m going to bump up cals and carbs with a salted caramel Hagen Das.

I was just about to launch into a rant on how much I dislike everyone being so concerned with everyone elses lives and not concerned enough with their own, but the irony just got too much for me.

What actually are your targets for macros etc?

I’d try and lecture you on diet but my diet today has been mostly old granny coffees and two bacon and egg sarnies. And an apple, for health.

Haha lunch was 4 bacon 2 egg sandwich, breakfast was 6 eggs on toast.

That question is probably something I should answer and work on, but I’m “bulking” so lots of tasty stuff X multiple times a day (aka coffee, cheese and sugar diet). But in order not to just look like a squishy turd I’d better start tightening up - so probably 40/40/20 (c/p/f) at around 2.7-3k cals.

Week 3, day 2

General life: pager went off twice last night at 1am and 545am, just perfect timing to screw up a nights sleep, can’t go back to bed anytime after 6 and just enough time by 1am to screw up sleep cycles, so I’m tired, nothing new.

Conditioning:
Ran 1 mile on treadmill - 7:38, wasn’t even close to being able to lie to myself and hit 10 mins today.

Gs1:
Bb row: 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 115 X 5
Floor press: as above
Ab rolls: 6 X 7 sets
Burpees: 5 X 7 sets

Rest 2 mins per set until set 6&7 (3 then 4 mins)

Gs2:
BB row: 92.5 X 12 10, 10
Floor press: 92.5 X 12, 10, 10
Ab rolls: 6 X 3 sets
Burpees: 5 X 3 sets

Emom ohp
35+blue bands X 3
Not at all explosive
30+ blue X 3 X 9 sets
Still not overly explosive but I wasn’t dropping anymore!

Deload cannot come quick enough!

Pwo 2 bananas 60g whey
Pre: taurine, citrulline, beta alanine, betaine, carnitine.
Intra: took chewy sweets in, forgot about them entirely whilst lying in puddles of my own sweat.

Weird confession - beta alanine makes my scalp super sensitive to rubbing so I keep running my hands through my hair during training and it feels vaguely inappropriate…

A methane molecule is less than a hundred times in size than the flu virus so even without getting into how gasses travel, how many molecules of methane needs to reach your nose before you smell a fart, and how it appears as if its droplets with a viral load (as opposed to a single lonely one instance of the virus) that transmits it I’m guessing that would go a long way to explain how they can protect you from the virus but not a fart

Although the research that I’ve seen (as a non-expert), suggests that masks are next to useless at protecting the wearer, but instead have a value in protecting everyone around the wearer.

Can’t say I’ve read the same research. I just came in with a guy-guess.

But, here’s something that’s usually left out of the discourse a lot, or I imagine left out completely as I’ve never seen this subject broached:

There’s other viruses and pathogens (and there’s a possibility there’ll be new ones in the future) where masks might protect the wearer. Then as a society it’d be good to make this a habitual practice as that will make what would’ve been future pandemics not happen. Additionally, I imagine that wearers/consumers stimulate the market and I’d suspect a mask with a hydrophobic coating on the outside would be even better at protecting the wearer. I recall shark scales having a very coarse structure on a micro-level to such an end that its not a habitable surface for certain organisms (bacteria?) and recreating that on a mask might improve the efficacy of a mask but it’d be hard to motivate that R&D if people aren’t willing to wear masks.

And there’s something to be said about employing safety measures if it protects others even if it doesn’t protect you. If that’s motivated from altruism or from not wanting to have to bear the reality of potentially having cost someone their life or quality of life doesn’t really matter.

Don’t you go raining real science down on this log of ignorance! (Better add joking just incase it isn’t clear, where’s that sarcasm font?)

I get what you’re saying regarding protecting others and I took isolation very seriously when I had symptoms (no tests available unfortunately!), it was a massive inconvenience, but we coped, the main thought being thought, I doubt it will do much damage to me or anyone in my household, but if I have it and accidentally spread it to somebody else and they die because of my selfish attitude then that’s on me.

But masks do suck and I haven’t worn one yet. UK gov are making change to that though!

Also in terms of ignorance Vs science - I ate another stir fry last night and lost weight, even when compensating for low calories with a cookie pie and clotted cream afterwards (the stir fry had tuna, noodles, cashews and sweet chilli sauce so wasn’t exactly dieting stir fry!).

I’m not after masses of weight gain, but after almost three weeks on this program I’m lighter than when I started which wasn’t the idea!

Respectfully, friend, this seems like you’ve preemptively made up your mind

Sorry wrongfully absolute in the above statement I haven’t worn them during the pandemic, I have during construction work. They’re hot and hard to breathe through and I really don’t like wearing then for more than a few minutes. But laws is laws!

1500 cals breakfast (not junk food surprisingly) - take that metabolism!

To counter that point, drywall dust is larger than the virus particle and the wearer of an N95 mask still has drywall dust around his nose after working in a dusty environment. If the mask can’t stop that then it’s not stopping the virus.

Secondly, the N95 mask is the only one that even comes close to sealing against your face. It only filters air coming in. If you have Covid then it does nothing to stop your poisoned air from being released to the world. Also, N95 are supposed to be replaced like every 30 minutes.

I think the only mask that would actually work is a SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus) but to be honest, I don’t want to live in a world where we all have to wear those for survival.

Edit: I just googled “drywall dust vs covid” and the first result was some stupid fact checker website. It said that just because drywall dust is bigger than the virus and it gets inside the mask doesn’t mean the mask is ineffective at slowing the spread of the virus. It’s like when they get hard facts that masks don’t work they respond like a child with “Nuh-uh! It still works a little!” What a joke. You know what else seems to slow the spread? Staying the hell away from me (6 ft or more).

My metabolism won, .25lb down (not particularly important but an overall small downward trend that I want to reverse! I didn’t track the rest of the day yesterday but I know it involved at least another 1k of junk food (500 cals in 2 small cookies and cream Tiffin things which were awesome, plus cookie dough pie & clotted cream, and fruit and nut chocolate, and I think I might have eaten a cup cake but not 100% sure) plus 2 meals which wouldn’t have been any less and 600 cals each. On a rest day.

Tracking starts today, until a reasonable rate of gains are established and I have some idea of how much it takes to out eat this program!

Squats today, looking forward to it.

I assume that was sarcasm, because otherwise: that’s silliness.

Nah genuine!
