Top set and back off were brutal, I gave serious effort for the back off, main conclusion I’m weak and unfit and my mind is currently holding me back. Not sure how to beat the mind yet.
Weight remains steady, not good.
I find alcohol to be effective here
Great suggestion! Not sure as a pre workout though.
My next best solution is signing up for the first strongman comp as soon as you possibly can. Hearing the events will initiate a whole different drive to train.
I drank a glass of alcohol free red wine (which is basically sour grape juice…) Does that count?
This is a solid suggestion. I do keep remembering that I am committed to this goal and if I end up doing this and zeroing every event I’ll be seriously embarrassed and peed off with myself. Not sure when sign up opens but guessing the event (there’s only one I live basically I’m the back waters of the UK) will be in August because it was last year.
It doesn’t count as alcohol and I’m not sure if it helps to outmaneuver your mind but if you enjoyed it, have at it mate.
I’ve just recently been made aware of the existence of alcohol free wine tbh and my first thought was: “But… grape juice?” I haven’t tried it though, so I can’t judge the difference.
It’s different, but if you drink alcohol I wouldn’t recommend alcohol free wine, the real stuff is significantly better. There are some really good alcohol free beers now, but I think the higher alcohol content of wine makes it impossible to mimic the taste and mouth feel with the alcohol removed.
Agreed. There are a few I actually really enjoy.
So I take it you stopped drinking alcohol altogether at some point?
Yup, Jan 2013, did enough drinking from youth until then to last a life time!
Also on the back of the earlier comment - I just emailed (if I got the right email address that is) the comp organiser to enquire about signing up for 2022. Even doing that made it feel more real - mind focusing…
Nearly coming up on 10 years there. Do you notice positive changes or on the hand, do you miss drinking at times?
Dude that’s a great first step! I’m proud of you and I know this will get your mind right and focused!
I think I noticed the positives to start but it’s been so long you kind of forget, but there are some serious positives health and money being the obvious but also you don’t lose days to hangovers or just tiredness and lack of motivation.
Thanks appreciate the support and nudge! Now looking at buying more kit for the gym - not that I really need it but so that money saved on booze has to go somewhere right?!
Log is probably top of my wish list right now, what are your thoughts on farmers handles, would just using two barbells be a good enough work around? Got the chain yoke to work with on the yoke front (plus no where to store a great big yoke) not sure if there is any other kit you’d advise? Also I still haven’t ever squatted in wraps is that worth practicing? (Not seen squats at many events round here though).
For a good reason. There is no simulating this tbh.
I really can’t imagine so. A trap bar would probably better in the absence of farmer’s handles.
That piece of kit looks absolutely brutal! I imagine it builds a lot of core strength and gut. I have my doubts if it will translate to a great time on the yoke but that’s secondary atm. Also I train on a very shaky yoke and do very well in comp, so there’s that.
No. Not necessary at all unless it comes up in comp (small chance). I like it better than sleeves but that’s preference.
Great, will get that ordered, not sure my ceiling height will work for that, going to have to get more training done outside. Particularly for this:
I’ll go trap bar in the interim and then maybe buy a cheap set of farmers if the comp announces it as an event.
It may not do, but it’s about my only option right now given space constraints! Plus it may not even appear.
I never put in the effort with wrapping, might give it a go as movement to throw in the mix but probably won’t be a big priority.
@Koestrizer from memory you had a log you didn’t like, was it strength shop or mirafit?
Strengthshop! That thing is shit. They apparently have an upgraded version now but that’s super expensive and not worse the money as well.
In the UK you have some great manufacturers. Rebel strength is reasonably priced for example
Thanks for the info, a log is high on my list. Do you recommend finding something appropriate to drop it on? And if so, what?
Old tires have been a strongman staple for crash mats for years. Punching bags and gymnastics mats work well too
Oh come on guys, I did a sandbag, now I’m going to go broke trying to keep up with all these SM implements!
I do live in the woods… maybe an actual no-shit log…
