Alcohol Advice

Just wondering if anyone could give me any advice on drinking. On the occasion when I go out, what alcoholic drinks are best? Which ones will be least detrimental to my health and efforts in the gym? I’m obviously not stupid enough to get completely wankered and end up in a gutter being sick on a regular basis, but it’s nice to have a few with friends from time to time.

I havn’t seen any articles specifically on this subject, so thats why I’m posting. Any help would be appreciated

same thread came up last week.

look into the thread “If you had to drink”

here you go, Forums - T Nation - The World's Trusted Community for Elite Fitness

Don’t get shitfaced, just have 4-6 drinks or so, til you feel good, and stop it there. Don’t obsess about it. Unless you’re cutting for a competition or something, it won’t do much harm at all.

Whiskey on the rocks.

Guinness is apparently fewer calories per pint than beers that would seem to be lighter.

Cheers for the link dave and appreciate the other advice guys. Thanks

The Carbs are slightly more complex, and there is actually a hint of nutritional value too.

On the downside, it’s got very low alcohol content, so if you’re looking for a buzz (rather than a beer that tastes good/keeps your hands full) you’ll end up drinking more of them.

If your going to have a mixed drink make sure the mixer is calorie free like diet soda, seltzer water, or club soda. And stick to the lower calorie liquors, ie drink Vodka over Jager. You can google for a list of calories per liquor/beer.

I recently launched a web site that was intended for this purpose. The short answer is that the best beers if you’re looking to minimize calories for your buzz are Bud Select 55 (prepare for bathroom trips), Bud Ice, Natty Light and Michelob Ultra. Not exactly going to win any taste contests. Wine and liquor (mixed with diet anything) are better than any beer.

Doesn’t BS 55 (pun intended) have like 2.something% alcohol content? That’s like half (or less) than a “typical” beer.

I guess I have to ask, why are you drinking? If it’s to be social, and not be the only square not holding a beer, I guess that makes sense. But if you’re hoping to get a buzz going, you’re just going to end up drinking twice as many anyways. Might as well cut to the chase, ditch the low-alcohol crap-tasting beer, and take a shot.

At least the Micholob Ultra Amber, which I think has six carbs, still has ‘real’ beer alcohol content.

If you’re not trying to get a buzz going, might as well stick to water and lime IMHO: why drink shitty tasting beer, to not get buzzed?

I would imagine it’s basically a marketing gimmick that they hope people looking for lower calories won’t notice. Obviously the alcohol itself in beer has a certain amount of calories associated with it. So, once you’ve lowered the amount of carbs to the lowest acceptable level, what else is there to remove?

OK, so I’ll try my best to answer these. Carbs and protein account for the non-alcohol calories. There’s definitely a limit as to how low these can go while it still tasting remotely like beer. Bud Select has the best ABV to calorie ratio, which I quote somewhat differently as the efficiency ratio (% calories from alcohol). For example, 2 BS 55 has more alcohol and less calories than 1 Bud. And another possible reason to have this is when you’re forced into situations where it’s social to drink something. For getting a buzz and minimizing calories, something like Michelob Ultra or Ultra Amber (which I haven’t really encountered) are better choices.

Wine and liquor (if using non-caloric mixers) are superior choices, which I cover in their respective sections.

That’s an amazing site ya got there. I’m sending out links to friends.

If you’re drinking less than twice a month, I’d say fuck it. Just enjoy yourself. Personally, I would never drink the piss beer recommended in this thread. Either I drink what I like, or I’ll just stick to water. I mean shit, 6 Heinekens are about 1000 calories. Consider it a cheat meal.

If you drinking more often than (like 2 a week), then it’s really going to add up and you’ll have to think about your choices and consider drinking bad tasting crap instead.

Kudos on the site. Very useful. Too bad more detailed info isn’t available on wine.

Thanks. I’m looking for ways to beef up the content, so let me know what sort of info you’d like to see and I’ll see what I can do. Unfortunately, wine wasn’t so interesting from from an efficiency standpoint. Close to 100% of its calories are from alcohol. The only driver of calories is volume and abv. Maybe a little calculator application?
