ha ha that was nice morning welcome / wake up call. Glad you found the owner,
Oh man, I initially read this thinking it was one of your own pups lol. I’m a huge dog person, but meeting a pup literally face to face mid set would definitely throw me for a loop haha
6/4/2025
2.4 mile run, then 2.4 mile walk back.
When I make a crock pot roast (this one was beef cheek, and was disgusting) ince I refrigerate it, I get a layer of fat that hardens, of course (white, on the right), but I also get this gelatinous material (yellowish, on the left).
Is this a different kind of fat? Is it collagen? Something else?
Unrelatedly, but still fat connected: is switching from Heavy Whipping Cream to Coconut Cream meaningful, assuming the same amount of fat is used in my coffee?
Thanks!
Health note:
Last night I enjoyed a sizable snack of macadamia nuts. Too many, as usual.
This morning, I had a loose stool right after waking up (just after 4) and then an emergency-blow diarrhea about an hour later, after a cup of coffee and a walk.
This has been typical for me but lately I’d cut back on the nutty snacks. I think it’s a clear connection between the macadamia nuts and diarrhea. OK, noted.
Damnit I like snacks. I like comfort food. I guess I need to Harden The Fuck Up and quit.
The yellow is fat, but unlike the white, it’s not as saturated and has a higher moisture and carotenoid content (due to the animal’s diet). Grass fed meats tend to have more yellow than grain fed, but both have some of both types!
Nope, I’d stick with the Whipping Cream unless you’re having issues with dairy. You’ll get a little more calcium.
That’s a shame. I just made chili with some not long ago and it was damn good. I can give you some ideas on how to get them right if you are interested?
Brilliant, thank you.
So in the amounts that I consume coconut or heavy whipping cream, I’m hearing both are equally bad for me?
Lol because I put way too much in my coffee
Yes please. I’ve had a good outcome ince before, but forgot how. This one tastes like dog food!
First off, make sure you are peeling/trimming the silver skin/fat cap off the top. That part is pretty much inedible, its not the good marbled kind of fat that makes a ribeye tasty, its just gristle.
Second, do you have any kind of smoker or grill to sear and get some of that type of flavor into them? I smoked them for part of my chili cook and it made all the difference.
Finally, they are a tough lean cut due to the fact cows spend all day chewing. They need to be cooked a long time, to an internal temp of 200+, otherwise, yeah it will be a tough piece of dog food.
This guy knows what he’s talking about.
Yeah, i just dumped it from the package into the crock pot with enough chicken stock to keep it wet.
Outcome was as expected.
But at least the long skow cook softens it - you could eat it with no teeth.
Don’t have a smoker or bbq but I’m sure with a little effort I can do better!
6/6/2025 Friday, forgot to log earlier.
1 mile run to park
20 minutes EMOM:
-3 pullups
-6 pushups
-9 squats
(that’s 60 pullups, 120 pushups, 180 squats in 20 minutes - not too shabby, though I’m not sure I could have kept it up for much longer. Was starting to feel nauseous.)
Quick rest to let my stomach settle.
1 mile run back home.
Well actually, about 0.7 miles along, had to stop because my body rebelled and started dry heaving. Walked about a block, then back in gear and ran the rest of the way home.
Not concerned about the nausea this time - I’d had a preworkout, first time since the trouble began. If I’m serious about beating this thing I’ll stop drinking energy drinks and stop preworkout and take better care of myself.
Further training:
8 minutes of non-stop calisthenics. Burpees, pushups, situps, squats, etc. This is very hard to do btw.
Surfing - pretty intense session, spent more time in the water than I usually do and was pretty much in “energizer bunny” mode.
As I’ve stated, I’m bad at surfing, which makes it a workout.
Well, if your goal is to see your abs, probably… lol
Like I tell my clients, If you don’t drink your coffee black, you don’t like coffee. You just like the $h!t you put in it.
Yeah I drink nescafe instant coffee
It gets the job done but in its own isn’t much for taste.
I’m not a coffee snob, instant coffee is not above me either. lol
6/9/2025 Monday
Up at 4:00. Started this at 4:45.
100lb sandbag.
- Carry bag down hill to park, about 0.2 miles. (Bear hug)
- Run to bottom of hill and back; about 1 mile round trip.
- 30 sandbag-over-shoulder throws. Took 4:38, happy with that.
- 3x10 sandbag squats - bear hug, left shoulder, right shoulder.
- 8 short hill sprints (just a few steps up a steep embankment)
- 3x10 pushups
- 3x10 pullups, varying grips
- Carry bag back home, up hill, about 0.2 miles. (Bear hug)
I owe the group some updates!!
6/9 Monday - after the above logged session: Knocked off work pretty early and went surfing, had a great time and put a lot of energy into it.
6/10 Tuesday, had the Treadmill Stress EKG to follow up from all the drama of the past few weeks.
Takeaways:
-Set a record for best heart the guy (doctor or tech? couldn’t tell) had seen in 11 years at that hospital. Most mets, or something like that. Couldn’t understand all the formulas/ratios involved, but it was good.
-Heart is on par with an 18 year old.
-Resting HR around 53 BPM.
-Whatever had looked like a prior heart attack on my earlier EKG, was not actually a prior heart attack - just an artefact of the setup or my unique heart, nothing of concern.
6/11 celebrated with a longer than usual hill run, around 3 miles, then a 1.6 mi walk back home.
Well, crap.
Another barf session.
Up at 4:25, started my run at 5:00.
Mistake was probably the small cup of coffee I had.
Mile to the park.
Started my EMOM and was shooting for 30 rounds:
3 pullups
6 pushups
9 squats
During round 5 I started heaving. Continued doing pullups while heaving, then yakked on the grass, did my pushups, yakked some more.
Took a walk around the park abd walked home, holding back insane diarrhea the whole time.
This is a datapoint. Hopefully I learn something from it.
6/16/2025 Monday
First, weekend update.
I had a GREAT weekend.
Friday PM was good, saturday was good, Sunday was good…
A lot of physical activity in there too. Went surfing again Saturday, and I as usual approached it as a fitness activity. Saturday night, we were feeling low-energy but took the dogs and all 4 for a walk.
We were all in flipflops.
We ended up at the park, and just went NUTS - everyone in the family, including kids and dogs, took turns doing wind sprints across the field. MY 8-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER IS THE FASTEST ONE. Unbelievable that she was even faster than me. Girl needs to be competitive in track. One thing at a time though.
So, Monday’s training,
Short walk.
100lb sandbag Front carry down to park.
5x10 squats with bag.
5x12 pushups.
5x8 pullups.
Front carry bag back home.
Short walk.
Good session.
Have a plan for a gym membership soon which will be nearer the house, well-equipped, and maybe start once-a-week lifting.
Also: Committing to losing 1 pound per week for 7 weeks. Nothing crazy. Target weight 178. My scale may be broken but this is assuming I weigh about 185.
Alright confession time, I can’t do black coffee. I say that as someone who drank exclusively black coffee for my first 6 years of drinking coffee. But then I started deploying, drinking the worlds worst black coffee for months on end, and now everytime I drink black coffee that bitter metallic taste just comes back from memory lol.
I have 20 calories a day of half and half and 2 packets of Splenda. If that makes me lose my abs, so be it. I can’t live with the memory of burnt ship coffee haunting my mornings haha
