Advice on Menopause?

So I got my blood work back from my doctor and at 44 I’m deep into menopause. This doesn’t come as a huge surprise. It’s just that’s it’s official now. It explains a lot of the irritability and exhaustion. I haven’t slept well in months and this is the likely culprit.

My question is for the women who lift heavy and perhaps also compete who have/are going through ‘the change’. What can I do to minimise the impact on my strength? For the last while I’ve been struggling with exhaustion to the point where everything seems like a big fucking deal to think about. It has been better since I’ve added fat but I’m struggling again.

Today I picked up an herbal supplement that is supposed to help with hot flashes, night sweats, bitchiness and sleep interruptions. The herbal supplement you smoke often helps with the rage but not with much else

Any concrete advice or information based on your own experience???

That’s unlucky to hit menopause so soon. I’m not there yet but a lot of women in America seem to rave about nature-identical hormones. I’m not sure how easy they are to get in Canada - they’re certainly not easy to get in the UK.

I keep getting hotmail from here: http://www.womentowomen.com/
They do a range of herbal menopause supplements and so forth. Might be worth having a look at.

I disagree with Cal, I think you are totally lucky, although I know you don’t feel it right now. Just think: NO MORE PERIODS!
Given you history of missed periods etc, I know this was not a huge surprise for you. Did you mother go through menopause at the same age, just wondering because I think 44 is a bit young but I guess it can vary.

I hope you keep this post updated and let us know how it goes with any supplements, medication etc and how you are feeling in the gym. How long is this supposed to last anyways (I mean the uncomfortable symptoms)?

It’s just a little bump in the road for you, with messed up hormones it must seem like more than that ( : but you’ll be back and stronger than ever, of that I’m sure.

I will try to keep this updated. The supplement I picked up yesterday is called FemMed. It is 'specially formulated to promote hormonal balance and alleviate the symptoms associated with menopause such as: hot flashed, night sweats, mood swings, sleep disturbances and irritability."

Having periods was never a big anything to me. I worry about losing my strength and libido. Those are big concerns. I would be very sad to never again here ‘lift like you fuck’ from my guy when training.

I started the supplements yesterday so no doubt it will take a bit to notice any changes.

I’m in for info. My wife has similar menopausal symptoms (recent night sweats, etc.). The start of irritability and fatigue is a little harder to pin down…started sometime around the first child eight years ago. I kid, I kid…kinda. She is 41.

You can try Tribulus - that is apparently excellent for libido in menopausal women.

I did a thesis on this for one of my classes in college. Magnesium, Calcium, and Vitamin D helped a lot of women to overcome the muscular weakness and joint irritability. From what I remember, the loss of muscular strength is usually due to the neglect of sensory motor activity which is caused by the neglect of flexibility and also stability, so yoga may actually help you. Good luck.

HAHA!! I wouldn’t worry about losing strength. As far as libido, ask your OB/GYN for testosterone supplementation prescription. Yeah, that’s right, you can get a 2% compounded testosterone propionate cream that is absorbed through your skin. You can use it every day to help with libido AND strength.

Then you can lift and fuck like nobody’s business.

PS Prolly the WADA won’t approve of supplementing test, but what about exceptions for medical conditions (like menopause) that warrant hormonal therapy??

Thank you. I was waiting for you to weigh in. That is good news. I feel like getting some now even though I don’t need it yet. I had been taking tribulus for months but had stopped recently because I wasn’t getting the same effect as when I first started and was going to try it again in a couple of months. When I started it, I felt like I was on perma ovulation. I was strong and wanted to fuck a lot. Plus my skin and hair felt amazing. I hate the thought of not feeling like that again.

Oaky I have been dancing the peri-menopause since I was 40. I am now 52 and it sucks! Had the night sweats, the night chills, the insomia, packed on weight and the worse was headaches that nobody could put an answer too, but ot run up my medical bills.

Finally this April I asked my endo about a test I had in January for my thyroid and DHEA. I had no DHEA registered. So I started to supplement with 5mg of DHEA and bumped it up about a month ago or so to 10 mg. It is suppose to split to what ever is needed, Estrogen or progesterone.

Finally after a few months no headaches. I was on progesterone but stopped that when cycles were coming two weeks apart. Anyway I am intriqued by the Tribulus. Loss of libido has been one thing, but now that I am side lined my muscle strength is in toilet.

I kinda felt it before I experienced this injury in my back or leg. Anyway I would like to know more input on this kind of supplementation. I know we don’t need much tetestrone, but if a little would help, it would make my life so much easier.
