Adarqui's Journal

uhhh really late reply… smh. apologies.

i do well on lots of slow high volume. so lots of recovery runs, light long runs, etc. I also seem to do good on threshold 1x/wk, which I was usually doing on the weekend (in the form of a race) - since I raced every weekend lol. And finally, at least one speed session during the week, ie on Tuesday or Wednesday. That formula was working pretty well for me (mostly slow long/recovery, threshold 1x, speed 1x). Occasionally i’d try and really sharpen up for a certain race/distance/pace, but i’ve had some of my best races without any sharpening. My 5k PR was no sharpening. but, 800m/1km/1mile was with sharpening (an entire dedicated 6 wk block). 10km/half/ultra PR’s were no sharpening. I guess that makes sense, given how slow I train. I’m kind of always ready to run slow, since I love it. Running fast requires much more focus & it’s more mentally draining.

As for what to do if I can’t run? Really hard to replace running, in terms of fitness. But, I like my long slow walks for maintaining some kind of “long slow fitness”. I usually respond well to long walks (2-3 hours). I respond very well when I apply overheat (extra clothing) to my long walks, and also do walks on hills etc. Recently I did a few long walks with hill sprints mixed in, in like 95-100F, while wearing pants/sweatshirt. Felt amazing for days afterwards. lol.

I’ve tried to incorporate other things into the routine to “replace running”, but tbh I just can’t stick to it because I find it far less effective & I just don’t enjoy it as much. I plan to do more shadow boxing soon (used to do it alot when i boxed) - not for fitness but just to get some rotational movements in and self defense stuff.

My non-run stuff is really just long-walk stuff. I’ve posted various long walk threads on here, I really enjoy it. I personally find it strengthens me up quite good, especially when recovering from injuries and such. A really slow run is very long walk-ish to me. I do love just light non-stop work in the heat for hours, dno why. Very drawn to it.

Been on some weird shit lately.

Got in some very good runs (1.5 hours of non stop hills a few weeks ago, never did that before).

I’m also not running as much tho lately, trying to completely heal this sacrum issue (small tear there which causes tons of stuff to go haywire, is improving). Also using this opportunity to kill some of my competitive spirit: I really love running, sometimes it bothers me that i’ve slowly shifted from just running, to centering my running around preparation for racing/competing. When deep down, I just love to go out there and zone out, trying to detach. Making good progress there. One example is, going out for a run, thinking about all kinds of stuff… But by 2-3 hours, especially in the heat, you’re not thinking about any of those things anymore. I love when my brain zones out… Long runs kind of feel like releasing a trigger point in my brain - that moment where the muscle just “lets go”. That’s probably my favorite aspect of running.

Lots of long walks with occasional hill sprints mixed in, losing 7+ lb water etc.

Down from 163 a few months ago, to 149 recently… on mostly diet. Since i’m not doing much activity lately, I figured i’d just try and get leaner than i’ve ever been before. Focusing alot on diet. Lots of weird fasting stuff. Also all of my long walks/runs have been fasted.

Goal is to get back under 140, but this time, without putting in 100 mile weeks etc. HEH. Last time I got under 140, I was hitting 80-100 miles weekly etc. This time, i’m trying to do it through almost entirely diet.

Last week I only trained 2 days, but it totaled 6 hours… lol. felt great. This week i’d like to get in 3 sessions.

Good luck on continued recovery. That is crazy weight loss. Think you could throw down some good dunks again?

Thanks man!

Yea kinda. I’m so light naturally, it’s just nuts. Graphite bones. 8|

nah definitely not. If I started jumping alot, then maybe it could creep back up to a light dunk, but def not “good dunks”. This was the last time I tried dunking → August 15 2016, nearly 2 years ago. Had some good jumps, and a few good attempts. This was after months of mixing jumping, sprinting, running, and lunges:

Won’t be doing any of that in the near future tho, just want to get 100% healthy and do lots of relaxed (high mileage) running. I couldn’t get anywhere as high off of a double leg jump - I used to get higher off of 2, but I was squatting alot etc. Without heavy lifting, my double leg jump sucks. I prefer single, just feels more natural to me & I can get more speed in the approach, without slamming on the brakes in plant.

You getting any dunks in again?

I do plan on doing more shadow boxing tho… mostly just for the movement benefits. Did a little last night, had fun, enjoyed it. Been years since i’ve done it.

Getting close. Thought I had one the other day - then realized it was a 9’9” rim! I’m back up to mid palm. I I’ll still get back there

nice man! good to hear!

hah sucks tho that it wasn’t 10, but you’ll keep inching it back up there. I imagine you could get up even higher on 10’ too … Once you realize a rim is low, it can take some of the fun out of it, at least for me it would. I’d jump pretty sh*tty on lower rims, didn’t enjoy it. Loved the challenge of trying to get stuff on 10’, so i’d step my game up a bit. I landed a few dunks on higher rims once, was tough but had some great jumps. Rims higher than 10’ can definitely “freeze you though”, can literally feel “intimidating” lmao.

gn man!

Wait, so rims aren’t a standard height?

they are, but people mess up when installing them 8| so you find “regulation rims” (10 ft) which range from 9’8" to 10’2" (from my experience). You’ll most often see them lower than 10’ instead of higher. Outdoor rims are usually closer to being exactly 10’ than rims at indoor fitness gym. Lots of rims at indoor fitness places (24 hour fitness, LA fitness) are 9’10" - that’s why you see so many dunk videos on those rims now. Rims at indoor facilities, built specifically for basketball (ie a big indoor facility with many regulation courts), will usually have rims at exactly 10 ft.

I preferred dunking outdoors, just because of the variety of scenery you get (I called it the dunk travel channel) lol.

oh, they also have rim heights at 8’ and 9’, usually for children etc.

ooooh snap. 148 lb today. Looking considerably leaner than a month ago. Haven’t run since Sunday, doing it most entirely through diet (long fasting periods, really clean/healthy meals, occasional milkshakes ;d). Kinda fun… hah.

Plan on getting in a run today & tmw tho.

Might try and get “bodybuilding lean”. I’m doing some bodyweight upper (dips/pullups) almost daily, which is keeping a little strength-ish look going on, though obviously skinny af.

How’s it going, man? Any updates?

man i’ve been wanting to reply for so fucking long. think about it every day for months. but then forget about it when i get home etc.

in a nutshell: decided to shut it down. i was still putting in decent mileage even with the injury - which would act like it’s healing, then get worse, repeat. all over the place. eventually I just shut it down completely.

i ran an injured 2:57 solo 1km, injured 5:07 alone mile, injured 5:18 race, then transitioned to really slow long distance - hoping that would be slow enough to heal it. finally just said fuck it.

here’s the thing though… i also stopped stretching. running alot would make me get the urge to stretch, and i’d just stretch the fuck out of the injured areas. so, running itself was feeling ok, but then i’d give in and stretch and jack shit up.

so stopped running, and stopped stretching.

feels alot better many months later. but, still going to stay away from training.

more details in next post.

peace man!

been wanting to update my journal for a long time.

one great thing “stopping training” has done for me, is break the addiction to my running watch (gps watch/strava etc). feels amazing. I ran a race for the first time without it, recently… just for fun… and actually ran really good. felt liberating. so in the end, this weird as fuck and bad injury could be incredibly worth it. to finally break the addiction to the watch feels beautiful. i’ve wanted to do it for so long. it’s done now.

my training is basically (for the last ~2 months):

  1. no running, no bodyweight exercises, no stretching, nothing.
  2. eating very clean (still 147-149 lb with no training)
  3. going on semi-frequent very long walks with my pups (ie 4 hours one day a week, 1-2 hours per day)
  4. occasionally doing some fast ~200-400m runs with the dogs
  5. doing some kind of yard work near-daily

so given that approach, actually feel in decent shape.

and even though I said “stopping training”, i’ve just transitioned into something different. i’m still training. i don’t plan to get back to using my GPS watch, or wearing one when racing, or racing frequently, or anything like that. but it’s possible that i could still end up running pretty fast using this new routine, especially if i throw in some actual runs again, maybe in 3-6 months from now. I plan to also step up the yard work in coming months, so that it’ll be much more demanding.

here’s something from 12/11/2019. it was surprising tbh… didn’t expect that at all:

12/11/2019

no training for months now, but managed to jog a 5:49 mile (got 1st 35-39 lmao).

and raced with my glasses. never did that before.

funny.

felt pretty good tbh. frequent long dog walks, occasional short runs with dogs, eating good, and yard work keeping me in ok shape i guess.

hope everyone is doing good. been lurking here & some folks on ig for a while still. but just needed to detach (and still detach) a bit to break the addiction, to let me heal up better.

Good to see you back man. Garden looks cool. Have you harvested the plantain yet?

Yo man! Thanks!

Nope not yet. Dad gave me the plaintain. It’s not doing so good at the moment but i predict it’ll turn around.

Dad also gave me a banana plant which has now spawned 2 babies which I re-potted, that have now spawned 3 babies that are growing rapidly.

Love it ;f It’s become my new hobby. Focusing more on that seems to really help me clear my head.

I want to get really good at propagating bougainvilleas (I have 4 successes so far!), and eventually grow most of my own food (tons of peppers that’s for sure, also avocados/bananas/etc). I have some jalapenos that are about ready, can’t wait to eat em`.

Been looking to get a property soon so I can take all of that to the next level. Not entirely ready yet tho, trying to figure out if I want to make that leap. For the most part I do. Just have to do more research. But, getting close to doing it.

peace man!

some banana baby photos I took today. it’s amazing how fast they grow, even just from the morning to the evening. love it:

Also, if anyone here has problems with iguanas eating plants, this technique seems to work. Basically, make the hose look like a snake, and they stay away :d They used to always be around, trying to sneak into the back yard to eat stuff. Ever since I started doing that, they are nowhere to be found. It does look like a snake too… lmao!
