Not quite yet. Will get there by summer. I’m at a 10’5” touch now. A few pounds down and a little jumping work and I will get back there.
ah nice. 10’5" is getting close again. probably need 10’8"? 10’8" would be what I need if I could palm. I can’t palm so I needed ~10’10" for lobs.
good stuff!
Yeah. 10’8” is about right. I can palm easily but timing is still key. 10’10” is when I can do easily and 11’ is when 2 hands is doable. 11’6” is when it gets fun. Only ever hit that high w a good run up. Had a college teammate of mine who was 5’10” and could stand under the hoop and jump up and do an easy 2 hand dunk. Insane.
From today you’re official Popeye ![]()
Btw I like your goal of being the best on all distances, you’ve got the determination to be that guy, maybe not at the same time but throughout the year dedicate different phases for 1K and 1 mile others for 5K and10K and then marathons and ultras.
When’s the next race? and the distance?
Can’t even imagine running 10 miles. Geez. I’ve always thought it would be fun to try and do long distance running (used to do 5K Cross Country as 8th and 9th grader - and did okay, I think 17:50 5K) - but at 220, I’d probably kill myself after 2 runs lol. Get your rest in man!
sick. 11’6" touches are nasty throw downs.
highest i’ve probably hit is 11’2"-11’3". had a friend who could hit ~11’8" (off a run) @ 5’11". dude had insane hops.
yea that’s nasty.
and doing anything from a stand still is crazy to me. being reactive, i have no feel for explosive movements without massive preloading - never been able to preload during the counter movement, no matter how hard i try. hah.
loool. i’ve gone on big spinach binges before. want to really keep the consistency for a long time tho.
yeah, I agree. It’s kind of like that already, some months have a big mile or 5k race as the focus, others have 10k/half etc. stuff like that.
ie this month, the main focus is half.
for April, the main focus is 5k & 1-mile.
so yup, it’ll work itself out like that. love it.
schedule for March looks like this, all saturday races!
March 02 → 10k
March 09 → Trail 5k
March 16 → 10 miler (first ever 10 miler!)
March 23 → Half Marathon (main focus for this month)
that’s the tentative schedule ;d
seems fun. just hope i’m shifting towards being healthy again, don’t want to race if I have stuff that’s tweaked/injured etc. so, hoping I can feel good for March 2 so I can get back on track.
peace man!
ha maybe. if you ever spontaneously do it though, stay on soft surfaces! grass/dirt are the best. man i hate running on roads! i’d be an XC addict if it were big down here, or if I knew about it in middle school/high school/college.
i need to find some fast trail 10k/half/full marathons etc. need to keep looking around. just so much safer running on soft surfaces, in my experience.
for light distance training runs etc, just doing it at “enjoyable pace” is the best. long duration at relaxed effort does wonders.
pc man!
light day. hot as fu*k.
took a nice 2 hour nap after that heat-run. felt so good.

2019 spinach salads: 4
diet:
- ate good/clean
- cookies & cream milkshake after run
- spinach salad
- awesome gouda cheese + crackers
- other stuff
10:00 AM: very light: 1h ::: (mulch hill path, overheat + crazy hot outside = insane) /// rough for only 1 hour
top of right foot starts bugging ~45 min in lately
I was always about as good from a step in CMJ as from a full running start. 11’6” would be some pretty good ones. About 42” from a run in start. Probably hit about 11’2” from standard vert jump.
Never anything crazy from a long ways out. Furthest was bottom of the key. Never any fancy windmills or anything, but sneaking in a so-so 360 one handed, and a decent 2-handed reverse.
nasty af.
11’2 SVJ = nuts. 11’6 peak = what I wanted officially on a vertec at some point.
those numbers will get you some monstrous dunks.
I had a huge gap between SVJ & LR-DLRVJ (left-right plant, running double leg jump).
SVJ was ~10’5"-10’6", LR-DLRVJ was 11’2"-11’3".
(^^ peak numbers)
always ~8-10" between my SVJ and RVJ.
I blame T-NATION for making me lift.
wonder how long it’d take me to get to 45 lb. x 100 reps (without standing/breathing breaks) in half squat. hehe. don’t think i’ve ever hit 100 in any barbell squat. I mean even when i did 225 x 45 (@ ~150) in ~2011, 45 lb x 100 would have been hard (lol). i’m sure i could have just done it if i manned up, but glutes/quads do get wrecked even with such light weight, it’s funny.
top of right foot still hurting after physical activity. odd.

2019 spinach salads: 4
diet:
- ate decent
08:00 AM: strength!
- lots of stuff
- 3sec paused dead hang ng pullups: BW x 5, sad
- finished with some empty bar squats, ohp, curl … squat/ohp felt so good.
08:30 PM: empty bar: squat {30, 30, 40, 50}, standing OHP {25}, curl {25}
- quick high rep session
- wanted to get some heart rate data for fun
- probably going to be sore from that
- felt good
- heels elevated, half squat, comfortable/close stance
standing ohp made my HR blow up a bit (140’s) and HR didn’t recover fast. HR recovered quick with squats, and didn’t get too high.

cool data hah.
My 11’2” wasn’t “standing” - but rather left foot planted below takeoff point, right foot back - bring right foot to left foot then takeoff. 11’6” running start.
My 2 foot counter movement was around 10’9-10”.
Single foot running takeoffs at around 11’2” at very best.
Never tried a vertec
ah ya sorry. i actually read it correct (drop step vert), then turned it into SVJ when replying.
ah nice!
single leg is fun, love the speed and such low GCT.
i never did any single leg measurements but it was crazy, my single leg blew up out of nowhere. It went from ~10’5"-10’7" max, to growing along side my DLRVJ without even knowing it, and ending up at ~11’ minimum for sure. I was landing some solid dunks with it towards the end of my dunk life. it actually contributed to the end of my dunk life tho. i kind of rushed into L-SLRVJ (left leg, single leg running vertical jump) once I realized it had improved so much. I started to like it more than DLRVJ, I think i’m more of a natural single leg jumper. All the squatting helped me develop a good double leg jump, but naturally I transition off one leg pretty good.
Anyway, after a month or so, i started developing a “thigh splint” (felt like a massive shin splint, in my thigh). Had to shut it down completely, then got derailed completely and never really went back to vert. That thigh splint was a real piece of shit. I actually have a vid from a “bad session” where it was bugging me alot, but still landed some ok dunks… turned out to be one of my last dunk sessions.
Love the first dunk in the vid. I was really amp’d to improve my single leg, but every session made it more impossible to jump, until I had to shut it down completely.
from 2011:
guh.
This “left VMO origin tweak” I did in 2018 reminds me of that thigh splint. I’ve been feeling it off and on lately, but much more so today (after those light squats yesterday). Need to be careful. It happened during my high mileage experiment in 2018, felt absolutely amazing, just gliding around on grass, and boom I felt my VMO literally pull at the origin. Was insane. Wonder if it’ll ever heal completely.
pc!!
@bustedwheel, you got any jump/dunk vids? if so link em!
man i was doing some weird shit back then… fun but weird shit… and dumb considering my leg/glute/back/shin felt wrecked.
fun drill:
lefty & righty:
more intense, bounding layups:
fun.
Nice! Looked good!
I might have one from 8 years ago when I was just starting to train again and at 210# but nothing from back 18-19 years ago - didn’t even have a video on my phone yet. There might be some good VHS stuff somewhere at my parents house though. I will try and find the one from 2011.
post flood coming. did some crazy sh*t this week.
