Man, you’d actually make a great professional photographer!

Thanks man! Hah maybe. I plan on getting a really sick camera at some point - and learning how to use it properly. I’d love to get more “properly” into photography. I follow a few photographers & some of the shots they put out are incredible. Would love to eventually be able to capture stuff like that, at a much higher level.

peace!

02/16/2018: nothing, rest

02/17/2018: light walk, rest

I should be asleep right now. About to try. Anyway, first half marathon race tomorrow (13.1 miles). The furthest i’ve raced is 3.1 miles so… should be interesting. I’m definitely in shape for 13.1 though.

The plan is to go out at 6:1X pace and just see how long I can maintain it → hopefully for the entire race. That would put my around ~1:22:XX for the half, which would drop ~10 minutes off of my PR. lmao. We’ll see about that though… i’m always a bit more optimistic than realistic, but sometimes it really pays off.

Anyway, 6:1X pace should be real easy early on, allowing me to enjoy the race a bit and just chill/relax. Should be cool. Excited about it.

Need to wakeup at 4 AM lool. Race is at 6 AM. boop.

peace!!!

If this were anyone but you I’d be kind of shocked. This being you, I’m sure you’ll hit it. Best of luck dude!

In for this running log… Good luck today
And some nice photos btw.
Stay focused. I used to feel sorry for myself at about halfway point, and had to keep focused not to slow to much. By miles 10 - 11 it gets tough. By then let your kenyan strides guide you to a super finish.

lmao! good point! Thanks alot man! Will post some details in a second. It didn’t go to plan but I still ran a decent time for my first half and PR’d my half by ~5 minutes (previous training PR was 1:32).

Alot of people I know were surprised that I even finished, because I went out fairly fast (probably 8th overall through 10k), and they don’t understand how you can start way too fast and still maintain/continue running. It’s alien to most people… so odd. lol.

Thanks alot man!! Definitely had a ton of fun. A more “enjoyable” race. Even though it was alot longer, I got to relax more since you have to run at slower paces (as compared to a mile or 5k for example). So, that was pretty cool.

peace!

Thanks dude! I tried! haha. Finished decent.

Much appreciated man!

And I wish I had read your advice prior to the race, miles 11 & 12 were wrecked, but that was just me being a “bitch”. Once the 3rd place overall women past me at mile 12, I decided to run harder & beat her and a bunch of other people to the finish… lol.

peace!

half marathon debut! lol.

race: 3mi w/u + Publix A1A Half Marathon: 1:27:11 official (PR) / 25th OA. 10k PR: 39:53. first half marathon!

  • 1:27:11 is basically 6:39 min/mi pace. I need to drop 40 seconds off of my pace eventually!
  • half PR: minus ~5 minutes
  • 10k PR: minus ~70s

first sub 1:30 half.

first sub 40 10k.

http://www.wildsideonline.net/results/2018/a1ahalf.php

kewl.

fun race… enjoyed it more than a 5k. but I tried to just stay relaxed throughout … so that probably explains it. Once I start pushing halfs harder, it’ll probably get alot rougher.

btw don’t trust my HR data. it’s wrecked. very inaccurate when i’m sitting around resting etc… it’s way off.

also, warmup was fun. Saw Mason (crazy fast dude, got 4th in this race), and we (and a few others) ran ~3 miles to the start. I was supposed to take a bus to the start … but the line was hundreds of people. So when I saw him I immediately asked how do I get to the start and he’s like, “we’re going to run there”, and I was relieved… i’d rather run 3 miles than wait in line for 40 minutes. LMFAO.

DON’T TRUST THE HR DATA. it’s WRECKED.

Yesterday and today, my resting HR was often over 100, but manual testing had it sub 50 … maybe my arms are too hairy for this optical HR monitoring bullshit. Anyway, there’s no way my HR was that high, I was relaxing. lmfao.

Lots of people are telling me that’s a solid first half race. Who knows, but i’m happy about it.

The last mile is considerably better because, the 3rd place female passed me and I just said nahhhhh, and went out in front of her and made sure she didn’t pass again.

Prior to that, I had started coasting a bit. Most of this race I was on my own, due to how weird I pace. Leaving packs, not being able to hang with other packs, etc.

Anyway, I was like #8 or #9 OA at 10k… lmfao.

drinking water out of a cup while running is HARD! I tried to drink at basically after water stop past mile 4, most of which were fails. A few successes. I’d try to get some gulps, then get annoyed and dump it on my head, which felt good.

This half was basically a “tune up” for a half I have on March 24th. I want to do really well in that one so, I learned alot in this race & know of a few things I need to work on.

I basically ran the race at the “same RPE” throughout. So, same effort level, but paces dropped. I didn’t really compensate for paces dropping much, until that last mile where I didn’t want to get beat by the 3rd overall female. That mile I dug down into some more power/effort etc. funny.

toenails are a bit beatup. top of right foot (injury from tying shoe too tight a few weeks ago) is bugging a little. Hoping to be solid for Tuesday tho. I’d like to get right back into things. I don’t think what I did today requires a ton of recovery.

peace!!

Alot of people I train with did pretty well. In the half, like 8th, 13th, 17th OA, the other guy I mentioned got 4th but only trained with him once. This guy did the best. 2:49:12 for the full marathon. He’s a monster. He’s been training with “us” for a month or so now, he’s been legit for a long time. 16:XX 5k guy while doing triathlons etc.

Congrats man. Nice running.
I would take it a bit easy, you did PR on 10 K, PR on a half Marathon. That calls for a week of easy restorative training and no high intensive stuff…
But that’s my experience with running.
Practise drinking while running, and for you next long race drink a little from every waterstation. Dehydration is often the course of falling pace times.
Again that was quite a good run man.

I used to hit up the Dunkin Dognuts right off the Sawgrass, at the Coral Ridge exit, all the time with my first GF; hits very close to home.
BTW: I find out for sure in the next few days, but it looks like I’m buying a place in FL. West Coast, but my wife’s family is all on the East side.

Damn man. Yea that’s very close to me as well. Didn’t know you were that close to me. We’ve probably crossed paths quite a few times: i’m always in Coral Springs/Boca/Tamarac area. I’m not sure what kind of “deal” Coral Springs PD has with Parkland, but they seemed to be very involved with what went down there. I guess Parkland & Coral Springs are very neighborly in general, lots of people go back & forth, kids cross over for schooling etc. I met several of the Parkland Officials who have been all over the news (speaking/interviews etc), at races in Parkland. I mean i’ve just spoken to them after the race. I raced Parkland Dash 5k the last two years. That’s where I met those folks. Douglas’s Cross Country Coach was killed: i’ve raced with kids from Douglas, in that race specifically. These are just small things but it is interesting how you think of them once something like this happens.

Alot of people in the local running community are doing a run on Sunday in honor of the victims etc, i’ll most likely go: i’m planning on going at least. It’s right down the road.

Also, regarding coming back to FL → awesome man! Not sure how you’re going to do it though without all of those seasons, snow, hiking etc that you are used to?

peace!

Thanks alot @mortdk!

Good advice for sure. I was planning on taking Tuesday easy but still wanted to get in some solid mileage. Those PR’s weren’t max PR’s so, I don’t think I need a full week of restorative work, but I could be wrong. I planned on bumping the intensity back up Thrusday, but we’ll see, I definitely won’t if I feel it’s unsafe. I train with a group tomorrow that has lots of different paces, i’m going to just hang with the “slower people” so I can take it easy.

I like the idea of practicing drinking while running, I could do that at the track much more easily. As far as the race goes, yea I definitely tried to drink a little from almost every water station, skipping the first few miles: I drank a whole bottle of water on my 3 mile warmup to the start line, so I felt really good initially. I probably slowed down my pace every time I drank water, because I slowed down to get the water and then slowed down a bit to try and drink it… I think that definitely helped to “weaken my pace”. So I need to get used to that. As an example, the guy I train with on occasion caught up to me around mile 7, and I hung with him until we got to a water station. He didn’t break his stride, I slowed down to try and get that water in me and then by the time I drank it, he was 15 yards away, lmao. So he was maintaining ~6:30 pace while drinking water, I probably slowed to like 7:30 to try and get it down. Klutz status.

I feel a bit beat up today, some of that is from some stretching I did last night: top of right foot, made my shin/bottom of foot hurt a bit today - dumb. Some of it is just some light quad soreness - definitely from the 16 miles yesterday. I’ve been putting in 20 milers and such, without feeling beat up. So that work I put in yesterday was significantly more intense, but not too crazy I don’t think.

Curious to see how I feel tomorrow.

What kind of distances do you run, or did you run? It definitely sounds like you have some experience with this road racing stuff. What were/are you into?

peace man!!

You’re welcome man, happy to help.

A little background: I am 53 years old.

TL:DR, I did running and triathlon races before switching to cyckling. Learned to drink a little at every station at full speed. Take cup, throw water in mouth, Throw cup away. 5 steps a most.

I started running/training late at the age of 24.
about 1990 I started triathlon. Did mostly races 1500 m svim, 40 km Bike, 10 km, wich were the olympic distance at that time. I did a single 3/4 ironman and 1 marathon.
Some half marathons and a couple of 10 km races too.
Best times were when i did triathlon a ran 10 km at about 38 minutes after svim and bike. I haven’t run a competitive 10 km, but perhaps I could have done 10 km in 37 minutes give or take half a minute.
My marathon I planned to run under 3 hours, but i could, from the gun, only run 5 minutes pr km so ended up doinge it in 3 hours 30 minutes.
I switched to bike road races and did i okay, ended in the elite group. Not pro group.

As for now I try to lift weights so my running is very little to nothing every week.

For the drinking grap the cup, open mouth and kind of throw the water in, throw cup away. Should take less than 5 sec to do it, full running. I wouldn’t do it for a 10 km race, but for the longer distances i would.
Wise to drink before, I would still recommend training drinking and then get that little sip everytime there is a waterstation. If you run totally out of steam at the end… It doesn’t matter just stop and drink. The time is wasted anyway.

Awesome man! 38 for 10k after sim/bike is no joke.

37 fresh sounds like it would have been more than possible.

Pretty cool. I train with a few people who are triathletes, or former triathletes. They are so rugged, very strong mentally. That guy I posted a photo of who got 3rd in the marathon this weekend, he was a triathlete but he’s transitioning to running exclusively. He actually hit an SUV during a triathlon, flying on his bike a cop waved in a car onto the course and it pulled out and he smashed into it, got crazy wrecked, all kinds of ligament tears/broken bones etc. People thought he was dead. After a year he came back better than before, nuts.

Ironically, the guy I just mentioned, I watched him go through a water station at mile 8 and it was so pro, like you mentioned. He didn’t break stride at all. I was tagging along with him until then, but as I struggled to get the water down he pulled away and I was just like meh, F it.

Yea great advice here. I actually spoke to someone I train with, we are going to practice it eventually, haha. We are both very bad at drinking water out of those cups so, makes sense to practice it.

peace man!
