Just echoing what everyone else has said, awesome job on 500!!
Some of you may remember Sergei Bubka, the Soviet-era pole vaulter who was among the all-time best. He was the first person to clear 6 meters, and when he did so the world went bonkers–except for those of us in the US, because, you know, meters. Shortly thereafter, much to the puzzlement of the rest of the world, Bubka went to the trouble of vaulting 6.1 meters–20 feet (technically, 20 ft 1/4 inch). Then it was the US’s turn to go nuts.
“Saying the feat was a gift to track and field followers in the United States, Sergei Bubka of the Soviet Union yesterday became the first person to pole-vault 20 feet.”
Congratulations @ActivitiesGuy! Fantastic work.

Still kind of in recovery mode after pulling 500 this weekend, so I was just going to do singles with 315 today, until I heard a woman behind me quite earnestly stump for Donald Trump by saying “At least he’s consistent” - apparently she hasn’t seen videos of Trump changing his position within the same day, when speaking to a different audience. I then decided to pull 315 for one set of high reps to clear some steam from my head.

Summer/Fall 2016 Programming Notes:
I am leaving for a two-week trip (wedding & honeymoon) in early-to-mid August. From now until then, to minimize the risk of injury and hopefully lean out a little, here’s the basic plan:
M: Deadlift 315 for reps + KB Snatches
T: Deadlift 315 for reps + KB Snatches
W: Deadlift 315 for reps + KB Snatches
R: Deadlift 315 for reps + KB Snatches
F: Deadlift 315 for reps + KB Snatches
S: Hot Yoga Class
S: Hot Yoga Class
On vacation, we’ll probably go to a few yoga classes, I’ll have access to a gym with pull-up bar and dumbbell rack, and we’ll be doing lots of outdoor stuff (hiking, beach/water activities, etc) so I’ll have a couple weeks off from heavy barbell training. Once we return, I’ll go ahead with another strength-building phase based mostly on deadlifts and kettlebell work, targeting another big pull (500-plus) later this fall. Something like this:
M: Deadlift 6 x 1 x 315
T: Deadlift 6 x 1 x 315
W: KB Snatches 100 x 53
R: Deadlift 6 x 1 x 315
F: Deadlift 6 x 1 x 315
S: Hot Yoga Class (90 Minutes)
S: Max-Effort Deadlift (work up to 1x475+)
I’d like to replicate the recent 500 deadlift sometime in late fall (Thanksgiving?) with a leaner-and-meaner frame. Of course a little strength gain would be great but my personal goal is to shed a few pounds, ideally clocking in around 200-205 instead of my present 217, and maintain that 500-plus deadlift.
CONGRATULATIONS!!! Good luck and have fun ![]()

Just got into reading this log, deadlifts 5x a week? Sounds fun and is obviously working ![]()
Thanks!
It seems to be working (for me, anyway) because I keep the per-workout volume fairly low…it’s basically a constant grease-the-groove, high-frequency, low-volume, variable-intensity approach, mostly motivated by the StrongFirst Daily Dose Deadlift program.

Very solid session today even with no new PR’s. I wanted to hit another single at 450-plus and emphatically did so with a really nice rep at 475, then followed that with a strong set of five at 405.

Hot Vinyasa Yoga (60 Minutes)
I’m working on BB Cleans and more OH pressing movements. It hadn’t occurred to me to try a KB as a variation. I’m going to have to go find a video for those.
There’s a difference between a real properly done kettlebell clean (see video linked below) and MY version of a kettlebell clean (which is basically just “hoist the weight to my shoulder, then press it”)
Here’s a good kettlebell clean video:
But, like I said, I basically just yank the thing from the floor up to my shoulder to get in position for the press.
