Did you make your own sandbag? Do you know what kind of bag you used?
I made one many years ago with a canvas bag that I found at an army surplus store. Lasted several years before tearing. I’d like to make a new one but I’m not sure what bag is best. A lot of gym equipment suppliers sell unfilled sandbags now.
Nope, I bought one from IronMind. May seem a bit expensive (54 dollars for the large) but sand is cheap and this bag is seemingly just about indestructible, so I consider it money well spent. I’m even thinking about buying the small bag to use for warmups, carries, or to practice shouldering - a goal I have eventually would be to get strong enough to lift the 200 pound bag to my shoulder.
Thanks, maybe I’ll go with ironmind. That price seems pretty standard for gym equipment companies and I trust their products will last.
I’d be willing to bet that goal could be achieved fairly quickly. You’re significantly stronger than me and I can shoulder my 150lb bag without much stress.
Thanks for sharing this. It’s always nice to hear a little history about other members, particularly when it relates to their strength and athleticism. You have a pretty varied background there but it’s easy to see where your work ethic and strength came from.

So my back twinged a bit on Saturday, felt really terrible yesterday (hence the very light axle presses), and today felt tough early but has improved a teensy bit as the day went on. Since I leave 335 loaded on my deadlift bar, and I was too nervous to try to unload the heavy plates so I could start light and see how this would go…I just used the axle to test it out as follows:

Called it there. Will gradually nudge my way up the rest of this week as my back feels better.
Sucks to hear that, get better mate.

@simo74, it’s still a little tender but much better today than yesterday - I’ve had a few teeth-grinding moments where I sat down or twisted weird and it really hurt - but today with a thorough warmup I was able to deadlift half a dozen singles at 335.
This might be a case of needing to take a step backwards to take a step forwards; for the past several years I have always worn my belt very high (just below my pecs, and entirely above my belly button). I always thought that was the best place to wear it; I saw a few lifters doing so, tried it, liked it, and never really questioned it. But today, I wore it low, below my ribcage, and had sort of an “ah-ha” moment - is this what I should have been doing the whole time? I got much more of a brace off the floor. I’ll see how it holds up as I return to pulling heavier weights, but I’m excited to give this a shot.

Back is mostly better, still just a bit tight and tender if I move quickly through certain planes of motion. I think I’m onto something with the lower belt placement though - not sure it will translate to a heavier 1RM but my back feels much better protected from the brace I get wearing it down there instead of high up, so hopefully I’ll get rid of this recurring tweak/twinge I’ve had four or five times in the past two years.
