I was watching a show the other day about an average guy who was training to be in a triathlon. He hired a personal trainer to help him lose weight and to get in shape. The personal trainer started off by going through the guys fridge to inspect the guys diet and immediately pointed to a beer and said you cannot lose weight even if you only have one beer a week. Is this true or was this personal trainer misinformed.
Do you really think that one beer 130 calories and the alcohol will have much if any effect at all on the other 40 meals and 5-10 hrs of training?

False Statement
Absolute statements such as this are usually false.
With that said, it’s usually a good idea to limit alcohol intake when you want to lose fat.
Totally false. I’ve many times lost body fat will still having a few beers a week.
I agree that limiting it is a good idea, but having a beer or two a week is not going to screw things up that bad. Not in my experience anyway.

I’ve done just fine while having a couple beers on the weekend, maybe it hampers my progress but all work and no play makes me a one bored dull kid.

If I know I’m going to go out with friends on a Saturday and have a few drinks, I’ll usually end up working out a little bit harder that morning in an attempt to ‘earn’ it. Then, the next day I end up having a pretty hard workout out of guilt.
Would my overall progress be better if I didn’t drink at all? Of course. But like you said, “all work and no play…”.
If you want to learn about health, don’t watch TV.
Remember that TV is always hyped up for ratings and is very rarely accurate.
The alchohol will definatly hamper your progress a little. A big night on hte turps reaks havoc on your metabolism.
In saying this, a beer here and there shouldn’t be too big a drama, as long as you factor that energy into your daily intakes etc.
Well the triathlete may have had a deadline approaching, maybe a month, and needed to be as elite as possible.
but I’ll tell you, you can lose weight/fat and still drink in moderation. A few times a month will not kill you, and will not halt your progress. I know, I once weighed 295 and am at 235 now, and please believe I never stopped drinking.
I think those above have pretty given you your answer.
Maybe you won’t lose fat quite as fast with a few drinks a week, but it’s definitely possible. I think it’s useful to point out that the majority of research has found that alcohol inhibits testosterone secretion.

Actually, you are probably better off having a few drinks than not. It sounds like in your case, the few drinks motivate you to work your ass off in the gym before and after. If you didn’t indulge, your workouts might be less intense and you would see fewer gains.
I lost weight while drinking beer. It’s overall calories that matter.
the problem with drinking is sometimes you don’t make good decisions.
If you drink a bit and lose your mind for a while you may end up eating 3 large pizzas, a dozen donuts, and Taco Bell nachos.
I do have a glass of red wine or an ice cold beer on a hot day
just don’t be crazy as drinks are liquid calories and they are also the voice of “hey let’s try this, it’ll be fine” on your shoulder sometimes

Damn, poor dog! Maybe broke his legs on that one! Hope he’s ok! Wow!
Beer, hmmmm. sounds good. Steve Prefontaine comes to mind.
