This has always been my position on abortion. Conception and birth are not magic, they are biological processes. People have a hard time wrapping their heads around that fact that over course of 9 months something can go from being a collection of cells to a human, but that is the case. There is a point during pregnancy when the “fetus” can survive independently of the mother when it couldn’t the day before, although our current state of technology does not have the resolution to detect such a transition. In my mind that is when it becomes a “person”. I believe this happens towards the beginning of the third trimester, but obviously is different for every fetus.
In my world:
Third trimester abortions are ilegal. In the event of a medical emergency an attempt to birth via incision is performed.
Second trimester abortions are performed after an ultrasound and at the discretion of a physician.
First trimester abortions are performed at the discretion of the impregnated woman.
How’s that sound?
Obviously the destruction of a group of cells cannot be made a crime (or else we would all be guilty); it’s clearly the potential of these specific cells that make them special, so you would be legislating based on potential.

I’ve also read some interesting research that women may reject conceived fetus’s at a much higher rate than we once thought if the body detects an unfavorable environment, the women themselves may not realize it because they never have any symptoms of pregnancy. If that’s true, in your world we may need to start monitoring feminal discharges in order to detect if a woman has unknowingly committed negligent homicide.

My point was that it is soooo freakin’ ironic how you guys get upset when YOU (a person with the ability to defend oneself) get threatened but you defend the right to tear off the head of a defenseless human life!
If you hate it when I merely type stuff like that, then how can you defend actually DOING it to a “fetus”?
