A Strong Squat, Brutal Bench Press, Dauntless Deadlift, and Massive Military press are as easy as 5/3/1

Thanks man! I appreciate you dropping in.

Since I’m planning on emphasizing back training this summer I figure I might as well post some ‘before’ pics.

Looking strong dude!

Thanks

Yay! Pics!

First, you’re a really lean 208. I weigh 60 pounds less and I’m not that lean.
Second, that’s a great before pic. They look like my afters.

Leaner than me, gj. lol.

Lean? Tell that to my belly. And thanks

Leaner? I’m not quite sure about that. How about tomorrow we check each others body fat levels  And thanks <3 it’s all for you.

Monday 4/25/11

Squat (narrowed my stance, pointed my toes in, focused on keeping the torso more upright)
somexsomex135
2x5x155
2x4x185
4x3x215

Bench press
2x5x135
2x4x160
4x3x185

RDLs
4x6x245 (was supposed to do a 5th set, grip was dead by the 5th set so put on straps, but back wouldn’t have it seeing as I pulled yesterday so no biggy)

CGBP (was supposed to do dips, but worked out in the garage)
5x5x185 (made sure to tuck in the elbows, sank you blaze and pbclax)

So today’s session is different than what I’ve been doing (i.e. 5/3/1). I figure I may as well try something new and let the PL coach give me workouts. I can foresee liking this change of pace. Somewhat reminiscent of my days of high school swimming since I really don’t know what I’ll be doing ahead of time.

And faaaackkk RDLs kill my grip :frowning:

Gonna do the good ol’ shoe method?

My lat spread is ugly, my thumbs can push more fat than I care to talk about, so yeah, you’re lean.

Did you like the narrow stance squat? I hate narrow >:]
And yeah, RDLs are mean to grips sigh

It’s a cool session, I like what your coach gave you.

Shoe method? Psssh no. I’m hoping for a more hands on approach.

Oh believe me I felt a fair amount of cushioning while doing my lat ‘spread’, if you can even call it that.

I don’t mind the narrow stance, it’s more of a narrower stance. About shoulder-width.

Yeah it’s a good change of pace. Although I probably made it harder than it should’ve been with the RDLs and CGBPing. He didn’t tell me what kind of weight to be using, so I decided to up it a little.

In your bench video, watch the bar path (look at the end of the bar, not the weights). You’ll notice that it shifts forward and back a lot during the movement. Try to plant your feet firmly under you, set up a nice arch, drive your traps into the bench, squeeze your shoulder blades together tight, grip the bar tight, and as others have said, tuck your elbows. Can’t see your wrists, but make sure you aren’t letting them fall back. That way you’ll get more stability and the bar will travel in a straight line. You’re stronger and could probably get a lot more than in the video that way.

If you have time, watch EFS’s “So You Think You Can Bench” videos. Great info.

Good work in here.

Thanks for dropping in and for the advice! I always try to remember those cues and have seen that video series. But I can definitely stand to keep on working on the cues and watch the vid again

I need to catch up on reading for that class. When do you plan on doing it?

And yes, hands-on leanness test, tomorrow, 12:30PM CST.

Bleh, now that you mention it I should probably start ASAP. Kennat believe the test is next week…

You look beautiful today in your red t-shirt.

The bromance is strong in here!

Aqua, did you grope Bug all day or did you actually lift? :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh dear lord of course not. I’m much too shy.

Technically it’s an off day, but my shoulders were feeling off and I felt like having a short session.

Tuesday 4/26/11

Military press
5x5x95 (kept these light)

Pull ups
5x5xBW

BB curls
2x5x85 (gahd, I’m filled with weak sauce)
3x10x65

It was mighty hot and humid in the garage, walked out drenched.

You two are so darn cute, haha

Do you have something planned yet for your back emphasis this summer?

Haven’t really come up with anything yet. If anything I’ll at least have a day dedicated to back work. I plan on reading some of the back specialization articles available here to get some ideas.

If you’ve got any suggestions I’m all ears

You could always try 5/3/1 for barbell rows, with chins and DB rows etc. for assistance.
