A Strong Squat, Brutal Bench Press, Dauntless Deadlift, and Massive Military press are as easy as 5/3/1

Cycle 2 Deload
Saturday 4/2/11

Deadlift
somexsomex135
5x225
5x245
3x275
1x315
1x335

RDLs
5x135
5x225
5x245
5x275 (was hoping to work up to a 5RM for the day, but grip was dead, opted to not use straps in favor of rest. Better safe than sorry)

After today’s session I’m glad for the deload. My grip was fine while DLing but after the RDLs it was absolutely dead. Might be a sign to take a short break, or maybe I shouldn’t be rowing on a Friday if I plan on DLing on Saturday/Sunday. For now I’ll finish my deload week and change up my weekly training schedule to avoid prior sessions from interfering with subsequent ones.

Blow off steam session

Front squats
Started off doing back squats up to 225, but wasn’t feeling it so went to FS.
3x225
1x245
1x255 (vid)
1x275 PR/b
failx295 (vid) Felt like I could have gotten this, but once I got out of the hole I just failed

Technically this week is a deload, but was in need to blowing off some steam so I did some squattin’

Nice job on the fronts bro. I need to find a rack so I can give them a try. I can do some if I clean it from the floor, but I wonder what I could do heavy. What’s your best back squat?

Thanks man. I bet you could easily FS what you’re zercher squatting.

I’m actually not really sure what my best back squat it. I think it’s 295, but if I remember correctly I was feeling sick at the time. For some reason I just don’t feel comfortable doing back squats, front squats feel a lot more natural.

Wow, you really think so? That would be a pleasant surprise; at this current point in time, I couldn’t imagine myself front squatting 300 for reps!

I asked about the back squat because I’m curious of front squat to back squat ratios. You have a pretty strong one (with respect to the front squat) if you ask me. If only I had a rack so that I could get mine up (to help with quad and upper back strength for the deadlift).

Well the way you’re doing zerchers is basically from a deadstop right? So based on that I’d think you’d be able to FS whatever you’re zercher squatting. But I haven’t done zerchers, so I’m not certain about the carry over.

Yeah, I’m hoping that FSing will help my deadlift as well. Better quads and upper back should definitely help

Being the dork I am, I actually measured my torso and my legs and compared it to how tall I am. Although I’m not sure what is average/normal in terms of the ratios but I’m thinking that my legs are longer than my torso, which would somewhat explain why I find FSing more natural.

Holy hell, you made that front squat look EASY. Nice job, bud

Wow, what a PR!
You definetely had the 295 though. Next time.

Did school cause this blow-off-steam session ;(

@ashy: Thanks man  I can already see a 3 plate FS in the near future.

@nikki: Maybe in a cycle or two I’ll try and get another PR. Right now I’ll try to hold back the urge and just get in quality reps. School sorta had to do with it, but more of annoying siblings. Frankly I just hate being late to things. So as soon as I got home I changed and hit the garage.

I’ve noticed that after yesterday’s front squat session, my right knee is, for lack of a better term, ‘twangy’. It just feels a little off. I’m not sure if it has to do with the FSing, but I wouldn’t be surprised considering I didn’t sit back as much as I normally do.

Hopefully it won’t be a problem. It shouldn’t be, if anything I’m guessing it’s from FSing ‘heavy’ for the first time.

lol you come in my log and tell me I’m stronger than you, then I come in here and you’re front squatting 50lbs more than me. FML. haha. Awesome Fronts, I def think you can get that 295 in the near future, then it’s onward to a three plate front squat.

Well I’m going to stick with what I’ve said in your log lol. More reason for me to not be complacent.

But in all seriousness, thanks  3 plate FS will be a nice milestone to hit.

Cycle 2 Deload
Tuesday 4/5/11

Chin ups
5xBW
3xBW+20
3xBW+40
3xBW+50 (kinda sorta a PR)
5x5xBW

Bench press
somexsomex135
5x175
3x195
1x225
1x235

Incline press
5x135
5x155
5x185
5x205 (this set was hard)

Band pull aparts
Lots staggered w/ pressing

Figured I’d try some incline pressing. Definitely need to get used to the movement, plus I’m pretty weak at it, so maybe working on it may bring about good things. For now, I’ll stick to floor presses.

Cycle 2 Deload
Wednesday 4/6/11

Front squats
somexsomex135
5x175
3x195
1x225
1x235

Squats
5x135
5x185
5x205
5x225

Pull ups
somexsome

The squats done after FSing felt really good. At first my hips shot up a bit sooner than my torso, but I was able to fix it by staying slow and controlled down and up until parallel. Once I hit parallel on the way up I exploded up. Well I at least tried to explode up lol. Plus it helps to be doing low bar squats at the school’s gym since the racks are wide enough to allow for my hands not to be crushed when I rack the bar, since I use a wider grip.

Well you really held back the urge on the FS. Very nice, it’s good to get quality reps in and not be focused on being greedy with numbers all the time.

Very nice training

I sure did haha, thanks  In general I need to keep the mind set of getting in quality reps with main work sets and not get greedy. Missing lifts really doesn’t help much. Once I get my quality reps in, I’ll use my assistance work to trash the muscles and make them hurt so good.

On a somewhat random note, my mom fractured her foot because she missed a stair step and slipped. She’s somewhat accident prone, and I’ve been slowly informing her on how one should exercise and eat. She appears to be warming up to the info I’ve been sharing, so hopefully I can sorta guide her on her fitness journey once her foot heals.

But that’s besides the point. My mom fracturing her foot because she slipped has made me realize that I not only lift weights to have nice mossels, but because I don’t want to a weak and frail individual. I don’t want my arm to snap when a leaf drops on it, nor do I want a mild breeze to send me flying across the Pacific ocean. When I get older I want to be kicking ass and taking names, not worrying about creaky knees or having to remember to take my cholesterol meds.

Anyhoo just something I sorta thought about while taking it easy during today’s deload session.

I must be old then, my knees are already creaky

Just stoppin in to say hi.

Strong work here!!

Epic front squatting dude

Lol how did I know that MiM will soon visit the log that I frequent

Sorry about your mom, my mother is also accident prone. She’s also the first to hate on me lifting weights. I hope she takes your advice for the long term, because I sure as hell can’t get my mother to. Bah.
