A Public Service Announcement

I’ve just got a quick $0.02 worth to add. Just from observation, when people are unaware of the source of information, they use clues to attempt to distinguish good sources from bad ones. Good grammar, while it does not necessarily correlate with knowledge on any particular subject, is often seen at least as a hallmark of a good education, if not of intelligence – especially by other people who also use good grammar (such as employers, customers, and hot little undergrad English majors whom you’re attempting to impress).

You can protest all you want about how fair or unfair it is for people to judge what you have to say based on how you say it, but the bottom line is that they do it. You can either say, "Fuck 'em" and not care, or you can attempt to use proper grammar and avoid the misrepresentation of your intelligence and/or attention to detail in your thought process that improper grammar has the tendency to convey. However, if you choose the "Fuck 'em" route, don't get all pissy when people discount what you have to say. After all, you don't care about them anyway, right?

I'm probably overly sensitive to grammar in the written word because for one, law professors are REALLY anal about grammar, even the grammar no one else in the whole world remembers (like gerund rules), and two, because I have to teach the stuff to earn beer money. So, take my opinion with a grain of salt.

My addendum to the grammar watch-list: Anyone, everyone, none, no one, and all such "one" pronouns are singular, and thus cannot be used in conjunction with the "their" possessive pronoun; e.g. "Did anyone lose their watch?" is incorrect. (It should be "Did anyone lose his watch?"; or, for the politically correct, "Did anyone lose his or her watch?").

(BTW, TEK, how do you get the moderator to include your paragraph separations? Mine always get jumbled into one giant rambling paragraph).

NOTE FROM MOD: IT TAKES A LITTLE PROGRAMMING KNOWLEDGE. SOME READERS KNOW IT ALREADY AND ADD IT THEMSELVES. SOMETIMES THE MODS ADD IT IF THEY HAVE TIME. MOST OF THE TIME WE DON'T DUE TO THE VOLUME OF POSTS.

I can’t type it straight out because the computer will carry out the function, but see if this works: To make a paragraph break, first type"<", then a “p”, then “>”. No quotation marks though. The “p” can be a capital too. Doesn’t matter. Using other symbols you can do bold print and all kinds of stuff. Hope that helps.

There is another side to things as well; I had a friend last night tell me that she “felt stupid” talking to me, and she asked if I found it difficult to carry on a conversation with her. Keep in mind, she’s a very intelligent young woman. She said that she’s very used to “talking down” because most people rely heavily on vernacular (her friends will literally stop her and comment when she uses the word “exude”). So in everyday conversation, perhaps it’s a good idea to avoid alienating people by being too correct.

YAWN…Is this post still around? Their r better things 4 talking 'bout. C, Eye just type as it comes from the heart. None of that proofreading 4 me. Peace 2 you.

HOPES THIS SHIT WORKS

TEK, the first time posted on t-mag you and a few others ripped my ass over my spelling. I have been out of school 15 years, work in a factory, make $68,000 a year. I started posting so my brain don’t completely turn to mush. You knew that I was trying to get across, you decided to rip me. By the way you didn’t answer my question on that post. You told me shit that I know I can’t spell. So I changed to stingray now I use a dictionary, I still type with one finger. Sometimes my mind goes faster then finger so sometimes just bare with it. To get here I typed www.t-mag.com, not www.spelling bee.com. You have gave me alot of good advise, after all you were the one that told me not to put my creatine in my protein shake right? You know alot about bodybuilding and I hope you will keep responding to my posts. The bottem line is I’m still JIM and I still can’t spell and probably never will. Peace brother

Because english only is my second laungish I have problems reading many post because of bad spelling and grammar.
