A Nightmare on Elm Street

I just saw it this evening. I liked it, but I didn’t like “nu-Freddy”. His voice just wasn’t scary. I think they did an awesome job with the makeup and special effects, but Freddy himself just wasn’t scary. Plus they threw the whole “Freddy is a pederast” thing in there which I didn’t like at all.

There’s only one Freddy Krueger, and as much as I wanted to like this movie - I just couldn’t get over that fact alone.

You do realize that the whole “Freddy is a pederast” thing is his original backstory and wasn’t created just for the new re-telling right?

Yep, but they should have left it out. It would have made me like Freddy even more, like in the original movies.

Krueger’s voice in this movie sucked too. He sounded like he was mumbling all the time. Haley has a really great angry growling voice, they should have used it more. Freddy just sounded bored the whole movie.

I saw it last night and here is my take on it (Spoiler Alert):

I couldn’t get over not hearing Englund’s Freddy voice - it just didn’t seem right and was not really creppy like Englund’s (my girl didn’t like that Freddy looked so different but that didn’t really bother me like the voice did).

I didn’t really like the tweak to the story line about the parents killing him without the police involvement - I much prefer the original where he got off on a technicality which forced the parents to take the law into their own hands.

I did like the tweak to the story line that the kids he was killing were the ones he abused in the past - in the original this never really explicitly said but it does make more sense with the tweak they made in the new movie.

I need to re-watch some of the originals again to confirm but I thought in the original series Freddy not only abused (they never really explictlly said sexual abuse but I thought it was implied) but also killed some of the kids (thus the finger knives and other devies used to tourture/kill them) and they just seemed to focus on the abuse part in the new movie - not really a complaint but just an observation.

I kept calling it Nightmare on EMO Street due to the EMO kid in the lead role (they are fucking everywhere nowadays it seems).

I thought it was much better than that piece of shit Friday the 13th from last year and worth seeing within the next couple of weeks until the big summer movies start to roll out.

I still think the best re-make to date is Dawn of the Dead though.

In the original he did kill some of the kids. Children started disappearing and parents started getting suspicious.

They shot a bunch of this movie in my old high school, apparently. It still doesn’t want to make me watch this movie though. Maybe I will eventually if for no other than being able to say “That was my locker!!!”

I thought this movie was pretty terrible. The Crazies was much better in my opinion all around. I had high hopes for it too but it didn’t play nearly enough in the psychological side. There could’ve been so many warped things that you think is real and then wouldn’t have been… instead it was pretty obvious what was dream and what wasn’t especially towards the end when everything in their heads took place in the factory.

I will agree that Haley’s voice was a little, I don’t know, disinterested sounding? But I really liked the direction they took the character and what he personally did with him. They made him way more sinister this time around. Also, not that this has anything to do with anything but Haley looks like a really little guy. Roy, I’ll check out BSG on your rec. Thanks for the heads up.

Fuck the haters, this is a great movie. Haley was great.

I agree he was more sinister - but for some reason they still had him trying to do the one-liners like Freddy used to do - it just didn’t work with Haley’s version of Freddy.

Haley’s bio says he’s 5’5", I Robert Englund is 5’9", not as small but still not a giant. It’s real apparent in Freddy v. Jason since Jason is damn near 7ft tall.

Not that 5’9" is so much bigger than 5’5", but Englund definitely looked more physically imposing, relatively speaking. That’s not really one of Freddy’s strengths as a monster, but the size difference was pretty noticeable. I think in Freddy vs Jason they got Kane Hodder [who was Jason for most of the series] to resume the role, and he’s supposed to be a pretty big dude.

The first few he fired off seemed kinda forced, but I thiught they got more natural as the movie went on.

“Remember me?” I sure do Freddy! You just weren’t this scary before!

I will start this review with the bad…

Bad acting: Some of the actors needed to go back to acting school and I have no idea how they got to be in this film, this complaint is headed by Kellan Lutz.

He is the torch runner, the opening shot and he isn’t all that good. Maybe twilight has sucked him dry (pun intended), but his performance seemed lazy and unconvincing.

Now, please don’t take that as all of them were bad actors that’s not the case. It was honestly just him and the fella who played Jesse.

The beginning was boring and semi predictable, once again I blame this on Kellan Lutz’s performance.

I hate that kids face, also. No, not Mr. Lutz’s but the lead male, who played Quinton. He always looked like he was smelling poop or that he had to take one.

Positive:

This movie was gnarly. The death scenes were perfect and the twist you didn’t see coming… I really thought they were going to carry this movie in one direction and BAM! they didn’t… It was a nice disturbing surprise.

Jackie Earle Haley was born to play Freddy, no doubt. His creep factor shot through the roof especially during the flashback scenes. Maybe I’d give this movie a lower rating if it wasn’t for those scenes, they really delivered a message.

Clancy Brown was perfect in his role as the concerned father. He made you believe what he did was necessary and you felt for him, felt the pain and fear that his character felt as the events from the past occured.

This movie is NOT your daddy’s Freddy flick. It’s a lot creepier, more unsettling, and may even scare you in fact. Rumor has it a sequel is being prepped and let me tell you, I’ll absolutely see it.

1 2 Freddy’s coming for you
3 4 Better lock your door
5 6 Grab your crucifix
7 8 Better stay up late
9 10 Freddy’s back again…

seriously…fudge. Are these the same people who disliked Rambo? If so, they can fuck themselves.[/quote]

QFT, Rambo is one of the funniest movies of all time.

DB

regardless of bad reviews, i’m still excited to see more freddy.

Not sure you can remake perfection. Because in space, no one can eat ice cream.

Is this some kinda porn flick?

Nah, just a ridiculous horror/comedy movie that featured, well, killer klowns from outerspace

That’d be an awful movie to remake. If anything take the concept and do something different.
