A Game of Thrones (Trailer)

Casting for Jaquen H’ghar, he looks perfect.

“A man sees, a man knows.”

SPOILERS--------------------------------------------------

Just finished ADWD,
SO PISSED ABOUT JON SNOW. lol.
I know that there’s the whole “no character is safe” deal,
but do they have to kill off ALL of my favorite characters?
Robb Stark, Jon Snow, Ned Stark, and more.

Also,
Sir Robert Strong has to be Gregor Cleglane, the Mountain, right?

Presumed that yes, Robert Strong is The Mountain that Rides.

I just picked up the first book, I’m about 600 pages in.

Am I the only one that think Catelyn is a bitch just a few notches down from Cersei ? Alright, I might be exasperating but I dislike the character. I find it funny Cersei rules by influencing Joffrey and Catelyn kinda does the same thing with Robb, not the exact same way, but it bugs me that everything Robb tries to do he ends up listening to his mother’s council.

Noob.

Just wait till you finish the 5th book.

Just finished A Dance With Dragons… amazing. I could barely put it down. On par for one of the best of the series. [/quote]

Seriously? I’ve been reading that it is the weakest – even when compared to Feast.

Amazon has it rated at 2.9 outta 5 and from some ASOFAI boards I’ve checked in on, the ratings were even lower (I think it even dipped below 2.7 at one point) before an… unexpected… influx of simplistic 5-star reviews flooded in.

I don’t haunt any of those boards, but it was pretty funny to swing by and see the nerdy drama that was afoot because of how this series was unfolding, how GRRM was handling criticisms and how Amazon/GRRM’s publishers are (allegedly) manipulating reviews.

<— waiting for paperback to maintain consistency with my collection.

There were some good parts, but I think GRRM is losing his handle on the series. The first 3 books were perfect, well thought out plot, rising action, crazy wtf twist and a solid resolution that left you wanting more. The last 2 just feel so much more “sloppy” than the first, with no real direction. The “big plot twist” in ADWD felt forced.

I think he spun so many story lines he’s having trouble tying it all back together.

I’m only halfway through, but 2.7/5 is pretty damn harsh. The problem with AFFC and ADWD is that there is so much happening all over the place. The first 3 books were far simpler, for lack of a better word.

My brother bought the hardcover despite just going paperback for the others. People have no patience!

It would drive me nuts seeing that kinda shit on my bookshelf… though to be honest I’m not sure how patient I’d be if ADWD was said to be on par with the first three novels.

I’m just super jelly of the people who will “discover” these books ten years from now… because at the rate GRRM is publishing these things I’ll be using my AARP discount to purchase the rest of the series when they finally come out.

It’s tough to stay fully invested in a series when the books are coming out so slow and you have the depressing suspicion the series is going to outlive the morbidly obese author.

I hear GRRM really abused the cliffhangers in ADWD by cashing in on his reputation for killing off (seemingly) main characters.

Agreed on the second part.

I don’t doubt that many people probably graded more harshly than they should’ve due to their expectations and disappointment over the waiting time than because of the actual quality of the work.

I hate to be butting in with the “I hear GRRM screwed up here, here and here”, because I won’t have a real opinion on it until I read the damn book… I’m a pretty easy guy to please when it comes to entertainment, and I really DO want this series to continue to kick ass, so I’m trying to keep an open mind about what to expect.

It was just the whole “one of the best of the series” thing that clashed with almost everything else I have read so far.

As far as story telling goes, A Clash of Kings was my favorite.

A Dance with Dragons is not as good as ACOK, but still miles ahead of other books. I loved it.

That’s a good point, he set the bar really high. I don’t think GRRM anticipated how big it would get, nor the “cult” following his books would receive.

My favorite is ASOS btw :]

The main difficulty with AFFC and ADWD is that a lot of people keep expecting another Storm of Swords right out of the gate. Storm was the culmination of many plotlines (the man spent 3 entire books setting up a poop joke, it takes some dedication) from the first two books. AFFC and ADWD are the set up for the last two in series, so they’re naturally not as action packed.

That being said, AFFC is my favorite out of the series and ADWD was definitely weak in a lot of areas. Loved the direction that Davos, Bran, Jon, and Victarion took while reading everything about Mereen made me want to gouge out my eyes with a rusty spoon.

This.

He really could’ve shortened the Mereen plot to the essentials.

I would’ve liked more Bran and more Sam. Somethings brewing at the Citadel and it could Jaqen H’ghar goin’ after the book of dragon lore Tyrion mentions. Would be nice to know what Maester Marwyn’s been up too as well.

I started this thread and finally tonight I’ll get to see the show!

It starts on HBO here in Taiwan in an hour!

Yes seriously. For the reasons others have mentioned. I’m not sure why you would argue against it given that you yourself haven’t read the book. A silly thing to do really. I’m surprised you posted so much without having read it.

Read it, form your own opinion, then let me know what you think. Perhaps we will disagree, or maybe you will change your mind. I, personally, would suggest against forming opinions on things based only on reviews, but to each his own.

Yep, my thoughts exactly.

Great point.

I’m on page 600 or so of AFFC and I see consistency in all GRRM’s stuff. It’s all good and I’m surprised when i hear lots of people saying this or that sucked.

He could write about Jaime and Brienne getting new shower curtains at Home Depot and that would be a great chapter.

Oh, and my guess for who will sit upon the Iron Throne when the series is done? A Stark befitting it no doubt!
