A Game of Thrones (Trailer)

One of the main drawbacks to the books, I feel, is that, while beautifully written, there really isn’t enough plot advancement to justify the thousands and thousands of pages that went into them.

Given the pace at which GRRM moves the stories along, as well as the numerous stories that need to be told, I am curious as to how (and where) this story is ultimately going to wind down (up) just a few books from now.

I don’t want to look back at the end of the series and wish he’d have swapped a couple thousand pages of political intrigue for more time spent campaigning against the Others, for instance.
I don’t like how it’s written. I’ve started reading the second book and I don’t like how it jumps from a dialogue to an explanation of a random fact. It’s interesting for character development, but I don’t like that style at all.

See that is my thought also, I can also tell by the people just watching the series and have not read the books. Everyone is “Fuck we need to do something the others are coming”, however the books do not go this way. I am halfway through the third book and I cant even remember when they last spoke about the others.

Knowing the author he will keep us entrenched in the political and war strife of the kings etc, then the others swoop in and kill everyone, book ends.
Spoiler

Read the prologue of the 3rd book again…
Well I lied actually I am only about 200 pages in, my bad. So what you telling me?
The prologue of the 3rd book is about the Others.

Interestingly enough, I’m at page 234 in it, and in my copy at least page 200 is also about the Others.

I picked it up last night for a few chapters while the wife was in the pool. I really dont know what page, I am at the point where The Onion Knight has just been thrown in the dungeon after coming back to Stannis’s castle. I really need to just buy this book and download to my Nook. So I can read it at work.

^ Okay just spent the 9 dollars and bought for my nook so I can read at work. I am actually only on page 150 so now I will ignore TNation the rest of the day and just read. Since work is slow and I have nothing to do at the moment.

I thought the books tended to feel a little bloated at times - particularly with diatribes that inform the reader of historical figures and past battles that don’t really matter - but I enjoyed the style nonetheless. While I appreciate GRRM trying to flesh out the world he is creating for the reader, a lot of times the information presented seemed far too irrelevant or extraneous to have bothered with.

I’m pretty sure GRRM is not going to give the story a rushed ending. A Feast for Crows was apparently supposed to be one book, but he couldn’t fit it all in so he made it two books. It was also originally supposed to be a trilogy, remember. I don’t think he has any issues with making more books to tell the story he wants to tell.

I agree that the writing is anything but succinct. GRRM would give Hemingway a fucking heart attack at the sight of one of his manuscripts. It’s almost too descriptive, but I just skip over the irrelevant stuff (descriptions of outfits, meals, etc).

Problem with this, though, is that he is an overweight man well past the prime of his life who is taking longer and longer to crank out his books…

^ Can you say Robert Jordan

LOL, yeah if he croaks that will fucking suck.

Apparently he is already (as of June 2010) 100+ pages into book 6. Hopefully it doesn’t take another 6 years to get this one out.

I do this too, mostly with the family trees.

Yeah. Excessive information is excessive…

I’m reading it in English and it becomes a bit annoying sometimes because there are many words that I’ve only seen in videogames and I have to check a dictionary.

But well, patience, the storyline is worth it.

Season Two casting tidbit.

Meet Brienne of Tarth.

“Brienne Tarth is the only daughter and heiress of Lord Selwyn Tarth of Evenfall Hall; she had three siblings, none of which survived childhood. Larger and stronger than most men, Brienne is a skilled warrior and longs to be a knight. She has an awkward personality, but is also honest and stubborn. She holds a naively idealized notion of knighthood despite the insults she receives from many knights, who call her “Brienne the Beauty” to mock her ugliness. She is also known as “Brienne, the Maid of Tarth”, but her most common and neutral nickname is “Brienne of Tarth”, as she is both from the House and island of Tarth. She is one of the deadliest fighters in the novel and does a whole lot of killing and maiming.”

She’s going to need to bulk up. Otherwise there is nothing else to say until we see her in set makeup. They’re going to have to ugly her up a lot.

A Dance with Dragons is about to come out…

If they needed a very ugly actress, they could have hired Renee Zellwegger and the money they would spend in salary, they save it on make-up.

I do this too, but then I always think I’m going to miss some important piece of info that seems trivial at first, but may be important later…

The only real example I can think of right now, is the description of the ‘thief’ who wants the key to the Citadel in the epilogue of AFFC…

MY COPY OF A DANCE WITH DRAGONS CAME TO DAY. HELL YEAH MUTHAFUCKA!!!

I could download it to my Nook for $14.99, but I am still working on the third book. So I will wait to down load it.

Enjoy and why are you typing all Sam Jackson?

Should we institute a new “ADWD SPOILER” alert?

I just ordered my copy so I should have it in time for my next business trip (to Nebraska, where there’s nothing else to do but read).

Got mine a day early thanks to Amazon Prime… shit is goooooood. Really cool to see a bunch of fan theories validated.
