A Feminist Defense of Masculine Virtues

Men often think they are more important in raising boys, but I think the influence of a father is just as important in raising girls.
Nothing in this world can teach a man how to love like his daughter.

You love your sons, no question about it, but your daughters are the ones that tech you how to love, how to truly understand what the feeling is.

At least, in my experience.

One of my favorite pictures is a photo of my youngest daughter curled up with my dad on the couch watching old John Wayne movies and napping. Full circle.

BTW, I don’t mean to imply my parents were perfect. There was a lot of drama. They separated several times when I was a kid, and even divorced for a couple of years and got remarried when I was an adult. It can be tough to keep kids from getting pulled into the vortex when that kind of thing is going on. One of the secrets to happiness is letting go of the crap, and focusing on the good. They’ve been good at forgiving each other. That has been a positive thing.

When a Slate contributor thinks you’re overboard, you’ve already drowned.

Maybe Affluenza is real.

So funny. I mean, I feel like I’ve been assaulted and I’m “halfway to pregnant” right now.

That comment about that super offensive “nearly nude” statue made me think of Tobias from Arrested Development, with his rare “never nude” psychological disorder. http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/lists/arrested-development-the-funniest-running-jokes-20130523/never-nude-tobias-19691231

In other news, breastfeeding is now required by law in the United Arab Emirates.

I read that earlier today and thought the exact same thing.

All that’s left to do is paint him blue!

I wonder what these girls would think if the Sleepwalker were further discovered to be an Analrapist.

I work near here…

Lol, guys this is Wesley. I am near tears because surrounding the campus of feminist utopia are a plethora of BMW’s driven by non-working, aging, trophy wives who discuss how expensive their shoes are with each other in line at starbucks…

Off topic, but we were watching the Olympic Slopestyle competitors. The event that looks like skateboarding but with snowboards.

The men are just spectacular. And then the women are so much well, less spectacular. I was surprised to see such a huge difference in an event like that.

Do you think it’s mostly a weight thing? The men are so much faster, and can get so much higher on their jumps, more rotations…

I think it has everything to do with our malignant patriarchal society. It’s been holding women down when it comes to snowboarding for millenia.
LOL @ all the patriarchy messing with snowboarding.

I’m being serious here.

<--------- not a physics major.

Sage Kotsenburg who won the men’s division is 5’10", 165 lbs.
Jamie Anderson who won for the women is 5’3", 119 lbs.

I guess I’m thinking of pinewood derby cars, and weight being important for speed. The Mister was coming down on weight last night.

Many of the men seemed to be in the 150 weight range. I don’t know. Just curious about how your parse that out. Obviously there are lots of female athletes who weigh 150, but they must not be the top female snowboarders. I’m picturing builds like gymnasts, and ice skaters, me. Smaller, with muscular legs. It’s hard to tell in all the snowsuits.

Considering several of them have ended up in the SI swimsuit issue or the ESPN body issue, you are fairly accurate in your assumption. I think its a mixture of weight there by increasing speed, also strength. It takes a lot of core strength to hit those spins and flips and I would assume that the leg strength would have something to do with the pop off the ramps (never snowboarded but this seems to make a difference wakeboarding).

It’s not just snowboarding.

The best high schools boys basketball teams could beat the WNBA allstars.

The woman’s 100m sprint record is beaten by high school boys ever year.

Not that I think you are a liar, but is this true or hyperbole?

I don’t know about anywhere else but I know in MHSAA class 4a state track 100m final this year the top 3 boys would have beat the second fastest woman ever. I am sure if that small of a sampling can do it there are plenty of young men around the country beating the top mark.

Edit: This was not last year or the year before, but it was the most current results posted to the website. I actually was looking this up before you asked CB because I was wondering the same thing.

It’s true and the women are probably on PEDS whereas the HS boys probably are not. We know FloJo used.

It is a combination of weight and center of gravity.

Guys won’t back off when it comes to stuff like this even when they know it’s going to be a disaster. I’ve taught a lot of guys and girls how to board and there are distinct differences in the aggression of the two.

My niece was the best ever though. She’s very agile and athletic, and most importantly never made the same mistake twice. Once she got a feel for it she was shredding. Even with that she still backs off a little before hitting a jump.
