In Smallville (the tv show), Pete Ross was played by a black (Sam Jones III), and Lana Lang was played by a Chinese(-ish) girl (Kristen Kreuk). It was odd for a while, but eventually nobody cared anymore. Then again, Clark Kent was still a dark-haired, blue-eyed, white boy (Tom Welling). So they only changed the supporting characters, not the main character. (then again, they also made some major changes to what most people would accept as canon for the Superboy/man storyline.)
I don’t think it would work to have Spiderman/Peter Parker played by a black guy. We’re (ie everyone who has ever read any spiderman comic) used to having him be a white guy. A nerdy, sarcastic white guy. (and yes, Tobey Maguire’s version sucked, but he was just going off what the writers gave him; so for some odd reason, the writers decided to not use the ultra-witty, wise-cracking version, and went with some emotional wuss-boy version instead.)

I thought Nick Fury being black was only in the Ultimate Marvel comic line. Did he get changed to black in the regular version of Marvel as well?

That’s right…but the Ultimate Marvel version was actually based ON Sam Jackson, not the other way around which is the point I was making.
Nick Fury was originally white. In the Ultimate version, they made him a one eyed Sam Jackson in the comics…and it worked.

Good post…but remember how significant that was seeing Pete Ross as a black guy. In the comics, he and Lana end up getting married far later in life (Pete ends up working under Lex when he becomes president). The guy playing him also did a pretty decent job until they wrote his character into lame-ness.
You are also right in that I have never seen the lead character ever changed from white to black in a movie. The supporting characters may (like King Pin to Spiderman), but never the actual hero.
In Spawn the movie, Al’s best friend is black in the comics but played by the white guy from Fire In the Sky in the movies. It worked fine.

Its actually sad but while all this black-white talk is going on asians are probably the most discriminated ethnicity in america.
Spiderman should be played by the asian dude from Harold and Kumar (Harold). Period.[/quote]
LOL.
And that is why people were complaining about the white characters in Avatar the Last Airbender…because the cartoon focused ONLY on people with Asian characteristics and culture. It seems that some are arguing that wanting to see Asians represented more is the exact same as allowing white actors to play parts written for other ethnic groups…as if history holds no relevance here at all.

Yeah, it was kind of weird seeing it at first, but after a couple of episodes, it kinda went away as the story picked up. And I really thought the Lana/Pete race changes would bug me, since I’ve always been a fan of the comics, where everyone is white, but eventually Kristen Kreuks hotness overwhelmed any other feelings I might have been having.
But then again, theres always that thought: What the heck is one black kid doing in the middle of Kansas?

Hey Spiderman is for kids and they could care fucking less about if PP is white or black so stop fucking up the next gen with rascist bullshit. Shit I know some geeky ass smart black kids just like geeky ass white kids so this role is very interchangeable since race has zero factor on the character.
I’m not ok with a black Spider-Man. Spider-Man/Peter Parker is white- it’s right there in the comic books.
When I write this, do not assume I’m ok with white actors playing roles that are based on other ethnicities because I’m not. One thing I couldn’t stand about Prince of Persia were all these english/american people acting as Persians. It’s bullshit.

I understand what your saying. Really. But we are not talking about a historical figure. Abe Lincoln, MLK, Hitler or even a person from A region “Prince of Persia”.
We are talking about a fictional comic book character who’s race was never an issue of his story. What upsets you so. I don’t hear Stan lee protesting. His character was a Nerdy Youth who lived in the borough of Queens. He was a Genius. He was a goofy around girls, he loved his Aunt an Uncle.
Now please tell me. PLEASE tell me what about this character made it so important that he only be played by a white person?
Any American born male can portray any the above. Or does him being black take away from the character somehow?

Yeah man. And everyone knows God is white.

And male.
On topic, I don’t really care. It may be good to keep characters similar to the comics, but the actor can be of any ethnicity as long as they do a GOOD JOB in the role they play. IE. Downey Jr. plays an excellent Iron Man.

I believe films that are either remakes or adaptations of different media need to follow the original as closely as possible. Call me a purist.
Don’t get me started on this Karate Kid remake when they’re not even doing fucking Karate.
^Hahahaha Jackie Chan it’s in China an they still call it Karate Kid, ok that is funny.
I will agree im not a fan of remaking a classic Movie. If your are going to stick to the original down to the race of each character why bother remaking a good movie just watch the original. (Now I’m all for remaking movies that sucked ass the first time)
But this is a re-telling of a story thru the eyes of another story teller(writer, director). So from what I have read they are sticking to the original concept, with a differnt actor.
